The next morning Finn jolted awake, fear consuming every last inch of his mind. Sweat trailed down his forehead as his hands trembled by his side and deep breaths instinctively escaped his lips. Finn's lips quivered as if tears were threatening to escaped his eyes, but nothing came.

No tears fell, no rain escaped the never ending storm that brewed beneath his irises.

Finn took a few deep breaths before glancing at the floor beside his bed. There lay the one girl that brought a smile to his face sound asleep on the floor beneath his bed. But instead of that static smile, a frown formed on his lips. Finn cursed himself for letting her sleep on the floor, but she had insisted and Lydia was stubborn, Finn knew she wouldn't give in.

Lydia had taken out the bullets of the gun and thrown them across the room. She simply stared at the bullets that littered the ground around the all before slowly walking out of the room with the gun in hand and grabbing a sleeping bag.

Finn knew his father would be back late the next day, due to his sudden disappearances here and there. But he would always come back the same: intoxicated and furious. His father always reeked of alcohol with a snarl etched on his face that made him look, in Finn's opinion, like an over-grown troll.

Finn didn't worry about Lydia facing the wrath of his father. Because to be honest, his father was a different person around Lydia.

Finn's father was a clever man. He knew that if he acted up around Lydia it would be the end of his freedom in seconds. So, Finn's father was lovable and caring towards Finn when the girl was around.

And that's how it's always been.

Lydia was consumed with light, the joy and happiness blinding her to the horrors that lie in the cracks of the world. She skipped through life only seeing the good in people. But what Lydia failed to see was that the world is a cruel place, all she saw was the sliver of light.

Whereas Finn walked his path in the dark while making sure the love of his life never stepped foot into the shadows where he stood.

Lydia slept in the spare sleeping bag on the floor after she told Finn to get some rest.  She waited until Finn fell asleep before settling down and falling to sleep herself.

Now Finn leaned over his bed to see Lydia fast asleep on the ground with the empty gun tightly gripped next to her chest.  She didn't want Finn to wake up and try anything so she emptied the gun and made sure it was with her at all times.  It seemed as though even in the depth of her unconscious state she protected Finn with every fiber of her being.

"Hey," Lydia's groggy morning voice made Finn jump.  He snapped out of his stare to see Lydia smiling a weak smile, her eyes barely open.

"Hey," Finn smiled back but soon fell when he saw the dark circled that lined Lydia's eyes.

"Did you sleep?" Finn blurts out making Lydia's eyes widen before softening. Finn didn't like the fact Lydia was loosing sleep over him. Finn took a deep breath hating that Lydia had been subjected to the nightmare that was his life. Because they lived in a cruel world and it was rare to find people as wonderful and filled with happiness as Lydia.

Putting something so light into a room filled with darkness would never live. The light would only be crushed and absorbed into the never ending abyss which was the darkness that filled their world. And the last thing Finn wanted to do was let Lydia fall, fall into the abyss of their world.

She brought her hand to her head, massaging her temple before speaking, "not really, but it's okay."

Finn knew that Lydia had a lot of questions, but was only holding back because she was afraid. Afraid that if she pushed too far he would go off the deep end. Afraid that she would lose Finn this time, for good.

"I'm sorry," Finn whispered as Lydia looked up with sadness laced through her eyes as tear welled. "I'm sorry for not being strong enough...," Finn was cut off by Lydia's arms wrapping around him tightly.

Finn winced, shrinking back making Lydia instantly back away, "I'm sorry."

"It's fine," Finn shrugged as Lydia shook her head, tears spilled from her eyes.

Finn knew the day Lydia discovered Finn's true situation that she would be heartbroken. And what hurt Finn the most knowing Lydia would blame herself.  This notion played over and over again in Finn's mind like a never ending merry-go-round of shame and guilt. Unfortunately, that day was here and there was nothing Finn could do to mend both his and her heart.

"No, it's not," Lydia shook her head viscously before leaning forward and hugging Finn gently. Making sure not to squeeze to tightly, but just enough so that Finn would know how much she really cared.

"I'm so sorry," Lydia sobbed even more as Finn shook his head before running a hand through her hair and leaning his head on the crook of her neck.

"I'll help you," Lydia whispered as a tear slipped down Finn's eye.

"I promise."

The simple words that passed through Lydia's lips was just enough to make Finn's frown slowly form into a small smile because he knew that maybe now things could finally be okay. Maybe keeping Lydia in the dark for so long wasn't good for either of them. Maybe this time with the help of Lydia, Finn would be able to step into the light with her by his side.

And that was what Lydia was determined to do.

"You coming?" Lydia asked as she tied her tennis shoes and glanced at Finn who was slowly gathering items to put in his backpack.

"Yeah," Finn simply replies before standing up and hoisting the backpack up his shoulder.

"No, not to school." A small smile formed on Lydia's face as Finn's expression shifted in confusion.

Skipping school wasn't a big problem for Finn.  Frankly, he had skipped more days then he could count.  But what really confused Finn was Lydia skipping school, much less offering to skip school.  Lydia had never missed a day of school, except for the time she caught the flu, but other than that occasion in sixth grade Lydia had never skipped school.

"What...?" Finn asked a little unsure of what Lydia had in mind.  Granted, Finn didn't feel like going to a place that he nicknamed the "capital of hell", so skipping with the girl her loved didn't sound so bad.

"I want to show you something," Lydia grinned before grabbing Finn's wrist and guiding him down the stairs and towards the front door.

Finn didn't know what Lydia was planning, but because Finn knew this young naive girl for so long, he knew that whatever it was it couldn't be that bad.

"Where are we going?" Finn asked as Lydia let go of his wrist to run around the car and open the drivers door.

"You'll see," she smiled before taking a seat in the driver's seat and waving him over to get in the car.

Finn smiled before jogging over to the car and taking a seat next to the young, cheerful girl that he had come to love.

They drove in silence, Finn knowing that if he had asked where they were headed too, Lydia would reply with a glare not tell him anything.

The silence around them gave Finn a sense of comfort. A comfort that was beautiful, a comfort that made it seemed like everything was okay. But maybe that feeling is what made this comfort so deadly. It lied, just like humans it had it's own dark secrets that it hid behind it's dark curtains that blocked the sun from reaching.

And that's what made Finn shiver, because he knew that things weren't okay. Things were far from okay. He knew that he was sitting in silence thinking about how Lydia would react after she got over the shock of her best friend trying to take his own life.

He wondered how his dad would react once he stepped through the doors of his very own hell. But in reality he knew what would happen once he stepped through the doors of the place he was supposed to find comfort in. The place he used to call home.  And that's what scared him the most.

Suddenly a warmth surrounded Finn making him furrow his eyebrows in confusion. Finn had never felt this kind of warmth. This kind of warmth gave him a feeling of worth. It told him he was worth the fight, and he was worth going to the ends of the earth for. And that was a feeling that Finn had never felt before. And Finn knew that that feeling could only come from one person.

Finn glanced down at his hand to see where the warmth generating from, to see where the warmth started and then pulsed through his veins and pumped all the way through his body. He glanced at his hand to see small fragile fingers laced between his, gently grasping. Finn took a deep breath noticing the way Lydia's hand clung to his. The way her hand gently held his, but still grasped his hand enough that anyone would know that there was absolute no possible way one could separate them.

And in that moment they were okay, but Finn knew that once he was pulled back into reality he would have to realize he was right back where he started. With an abusive father, a mother who left him, a sister that left him behind, and a girl that didn't love him back and that was the sick truth.

The journey ended in what felt like mere seconds, but had been hours.  The sun set in the distance as a smile grew on Finn lips before slowly stepping out of the car.  Lydia had driven them hours away to the middle of nowhere and Finn was totally fine with it.

The field was a small grassland in the valley by many mountains that covered the distance where the sun set.  Lydia walked around the truck before hopping up in the back and motioning Finn to join her.  Finn jogged around the car and joined Lydia as he sat next to her in the back of her small red pickup truck.

"Why did you take me here," Finn glanced at Lydia with furrowed eyes, a smirk slowly crossing his mouth.

Lydia smiled leaning closer to whisper, "Just wait."

So, Finn sat in the comfortable silence that surrounded them.  Lydia shivered next to him as his eyebrows furrowed in worry.  He quickly looked around the small space before grabbing the blanket that sat in the far right corner of the truck.  He draped it over Lydia making sure she was comfortable, because to be honest that's all he cared about.

Finn waited for anything to happen, but nothing came.  He slowly turned to Lydia with an eyebrow raised.  She giggled making Finn's heart skip a beat.  And that was the moment Finn realized how much of an effect Lydia had over him.  He knew he was in love with Lydia, but knowing the slightest smile that formed on her lips could make his world go round.  Or when her hand touched his, it left a tingling sensation that could never go away.

The mere thought of how much control she had over him was taunting.  Something that he wanted and needed so badly dangled above him like a dog with meat attached to his tail.  No matter how hard he tried to reach it he just couldn't quite grasp it.

That feeling Finn could only describe as love.  And knowing that someone you love could never love you back, but instead you keep loving them the same anyway.  That is how powerful love truly is.    It is so powerful it could even take the strongest man down.

Love shatters you like a mirror but can magically replace all the piece that once filled the frame perfectly.  Love changes you, and even on the darkest day love can be the light at the end of the tunnel.  Love can keep you grounded and can bring you back to sanity when all hope feels lost.

But most of all, love is selfish, and Finn knew that all too well.  People only love for their own personal happiness.  But isn't that why people love? To be happy?  People fall in love and then their happy together.  Nothing could ever stop them from loving each other because together they're happier.  They bring each other joy and that's exactly what Finn believed.

However, what happens when love stops giving you happiness.  When love stops giving people the happiness they once had, that's when love becomes selfish.  When all that happiness is gone and that person no longer gives you that high that you once craved, what do you do?  You just leave.  You stop loving and then leave and never come back.  Because that's what love is.  It's selfish and when it doesn't get what it want, it's gone.  In mere seconds it disappears, like it was never there.

But maybe Finn knew this.  Maybe Finn knew that love is selfish and will always be selfish.  Finn knew this and he still decided to love, love so deeply that it literally gave him life.  Because Finn was selfish, and he knew this.  But he didn't care, because he loved every bit of it.

"Look! Look! Look!" Lydia pointed with a smile on her lips as she leaned closer to Finn. Finn turned to the object that she was pointing at.

When Finn turned he saw one of the most beautiful things he's ever seen. Well besides Lydia of course. There in the distance was the sun seeping into the mountains as it pulled all of the light along with it.

The sun slowly fell as beautiful colors dissolved into the night sky around it. The colors dripped like a saturated sunset and blended into one another. The golden orbs that once filled the sky slowly dimmed as the yellow that was once there turned to a light pink that formed quickly into a dark purple and reminded Finn of a grape.

That beautiful grape color quickly diminished as it turned into a dark blue. Twinkling stars shone through the night as the pale crescent moon took its place.

Finn had never sat and actually watched the sunset before. He never knew why, he just never thought to actually watch it. "I watch this almost every night," Lydia whispered still staring at the sky.

Finn didn't know what to say. He was utterly speechless, something he found himself when he was around Lydia often. It was the most beautiful sight he'd ever seen.

"It's beautiful," Finn whispered still staring at the beautiful night above.

Lydia turned to Finn with a small smile. She leaned closer to Finn, she slowly grasped Finn's hand gently before she whispered in his ear. "I'll help you find happiness, Finn."

Finn turned to Lydia with a frown and furrowed eyebrows. But Lydia just stared at him before smiling as a tear slowly trickled down her cheek.

"I promise."

And that's when Finn did the unthinkable.

He smiled.
