SIX
The mention of knives make every future new member of their society narrow their eyes at the instrument, most shivering at the mere thought of the knife digging into their flesh, others looking at it as if it was their salvation from their homes, to Lyanna it was just a kitchen utensil or a fighting weapon.
Gregory Zellner holds his bleeding hand over the bowl of dirt, to choose Amity, the faction that Lyanna wouldn't choose, not even if it was either that or be factionless, she couldn't do the happy and sunshine attitude.
"Rogers, Helena." Candor.
"Lovelace, Frederick." Erudite.
"Erasmus, Anne." Abnegation.
"Eaton, Tobias."
That name had Lyanna fixating her eyes on the boy as he stood up, his stance was guarded, face emotionless, leaving him unable to be read by anyone, but Lyanna wasn't just anyone, she was, according to her aunt, a divergent, and according, to her father, the best person to read people, better than judges, better than lawyers, better than anyone he had ever known.
As he walked to the stage she noticed how his chest hadn't moved, telling her he was holding his breath, he limped slightly barely noticeable unless you stared at him intently, his shoulders although square and pushing his chest out to demonstrate his tall posture, shagged slightly so his clothes weren't touching his back.
Her brows shot up as she noticed this, she knew all about the rumours regarding Marcus Eaton and his child, the child that no one saw after the death of his wife, the child that people only saw glimpses off in school, the child that sat at the back of each classroom and narrowly avoided being picked to answer or to go to the board.
Carefully she peered over her shoulder, her green eyes instantly locking on Marcus Eaton's stiff figure, his face impassive like his son's his eyes betrayed him, however, they showed his internal anger and anxiousness, his hand curled into a fist around the arms of the chair he sat on, gripping it so tightly that his knuckles were white. He wanted his son to choose Abnegation and to go home with him.
The sound of coal sizzling echoed in Lyanna's ears as she continued to carefully watch Marcus, watching as his emotionless mask broke and true anger etched on his features with a small hint of heartbreak.
Dauntless.
Lyanna quickly turns back to the front as Max calls out yet another name, in the midst of the ones he already called, something that had had her tuning out.
"Stone, Vera." An Asian looking girl dressed in red and yellow stood up, her black hair in loose waves, before she could approach the stage, however, Max released an amused chuckle and stated with a risen brow "I said Vera, not Jackie." the whole room gasped lowly, Lyanna included. A girl identical to the one that had stood up, stood up and shared a look of discontent with her twin sister, discontent that they were caught trying to trick people.
Jackie, it would seem sat down, coincidentally next to Lyanna and released a dramatic sight that amused Lyanna.
Vera stepped on the stage and grabbed the knife from Max, her dress colours identical to her sister's but in alternate locations, she dug the knife into her palm before hovering it over the Dauntless coals, smirking at Max and then her sister before joining the line of dauntless newbies.
Dauntless.
"Stone, Jackie." Dauntless.
Lyanna didn't even need to watch Jackie cut her palm and choose to know what she would choose, she knew how tight-knit twins were.
Three more people chose, Erudite, Erudite and Candor, before Lyanna actually paid attention.
"Coulter, Eric."
A blonde boy dressed in blue stood up, the aura around him dictating that he was not going to stay in Erudite, he wasn't by all mean lanky like the Erudite and Abnegation were, it was clear in his determination filled steps that he wasn't going to choose Candor, Abnegation or Amity either, which left only one answer.
Dauntless.
The sound of the sizzling coals seemed to be a sound that was haunting Lyanna because it seemed to be the only sound that she heard when she was paying attention, the twins from Amity, Tobias Eaton, two other Dauntless-borns that chose to stay, whose names she hadn't heard, and now Eric Coulter.
Finally after Eric, for some reason coming in last was her, her name tumbling from Max's lips as if it was a desperate call.
"Owens, Lyanna."
