FIVE

The morning of the Choosing Ceremony Lyanna was dressed white leggings, a white top and a black blazer, simple and elegant. Her mother was dressed in her usual white suit with a black shirt and her father was dressed in a black suit with a white tie.

She remembered when her mother spoke up at the dinner table the previous night, her sweet and calm voice stating "You're leaving." there had been no anger or disappointment in her voice, only understanding. Her father's head snapped up from the court case he'd been reading on the tablet, eyes wide with shock, but neither anger or disappointment filled his eyes.

"Yes." She had replied, setting down the silverware, her parents knew she couldn't tell them the result of her test so they didn't push her, instead Lyanna had merely continued "It isn't what my test result suggested but it's what I believe I should do."  her mother nodded, giving her a small smile as her father claimed "As long as you don't come to regret it.

Lyanna was lucky, her parents were understanding, for the most part, they gave her her space and freedom, just as long as she never lied which she never did. Tiana Grey had manually overridden the computer and inputted CANDOR as the tests final result, right before Lyanna's eyes after the two had talked and as much as she loved being in Candor, it was not the faction she was going to choose.

They walked among the busy streets, headed to the same place everyone else was headed—the Hub, a black pillar in the distance, its two prongs stabbing the sky. The Choosing Ceremony floor is the 20th and for some weird reason the Abnegation climbed the stairs, foolishly in Lyanna's mind but a small part of her had to commend their persistence for always being selfless and giving what they have to others.

Lyanna takes the elevator like the rest of the factions and once she reached the right floor she slips out of the elevator and towards the door that led to the Ceremony Room. The room itself is dim, the windows blocked off, the seats arranged around the circle of bowls that hold glass and water and stones and coal and earth. A serene environment, very much like the courtrooms in the Candor building.

Lyanna quickly hugged her parents and joined the rest of the 16-year-olds that were sitting on the edge and front of the semi-circle that the 5 factions created around the stage and ran a hand through her hair, a nervous tick of hers, before she folded her hands and placed them on her lap. After what seems hours the doors finally close, and there's a moment of quiet as the council representative from Dauntless moves to the podium located on the stage.

Max was his name, Lyanna had heard her parents talking about all the representatives of each factions, his fingers wrapped around the edge of the podium, the muscles on his arms straining under the constricting clothes that covered them, allowing any and everyone to see that he did indeed work out.

"Welcome to the Choosing Ceremony," Max greets, his deep voice filling the room easily. He didn't need the microphone, his voice was loud enough and strong enough to bounce off the walls of the room and scare those who were muttering quietly to silence. "Today you will choose your factions. Until this point you have followed your parents' paths, your parents' rules. Today you will find your own path, make your own rules."

His words made Lyanna peer over her shoulder in an attempt to locate her parents, to find her mother give her a small soothing smile, instead she caught the sight of Marcus Eaton, the representative for Abnegation pressing his lips together in a thin line with disdain clear in his eyes and features at the speech. Such a non-Abnegation reaction from their leader, this, of course, arose curiosity inside her, why would such a selfless man hate this speech so much, wouldn't he want his child to change the world in his own way?

"A long time ago our ancestors realized that each of us, each individual, was responsible for the evil that exists in the world. But they didn't agree on exactly what that evil was," Max says. "Some said that it was dishonesty, some said that it was ignorance, some aggression, some said selfishness was the cause." Turning her head back to the front she could see the future new members of each faction look down at the mention of their birth faction.

"And the last group said that it was cowardice that was to blame." A few hoots rise up from the Dauntless section, and the rest of the Dauntless laugh, including the ones that were waiting to choose their new faction, even she smiled at their antics, there was no denying that Dauntless was the life of the party no matter where they went.

"That is how we came by our factions: Candor, Erudite, Amity, Abnegation, and Dauntless." Max smiles. "In them, we find administrators and teachers and counselors and leaders and protectors. In them, we find our sense of belonging, our sense of community, our very lives." He clears his throat. "Enough of that. Let's get to it. Come forward and get your knife, then make your choice. First up, Zellner, Gregory."
