Nedzu PoV for 'Find'
[A/N: This one wasn't request put rather a tangent inspired by a comment. Yasemindamian (on ao3) wrote, "Nezu enters the chat: So you captured one of my students." and I was inspired to write about Nedzu. This takes place during the beginning events of the chapter Find.]
Nedzu prides himself on knowing everything. A student of his once told him told him that said pride would be his downfall. She told him one day he'd stumble headfirst into the wrong situation thinking he knew every outcome, only to come out with failure. Sutorimu-kun always had a way of sending him reeling with those sorts of comments. She's right, of course, but he still can't help but rely on his knowledge.
Intelligence brought him to where he is now. Books and writing's hoisted him up in the world. Without it, he is but a simple creature with no place among men.
Yet, he must admit he did not know this.
He'd been on his way to speak to Yagi before class when he'd hesitated outside the new teachers door. From inside the office, he heard not his colleagues voice but another familiar one; the one he'd only ever heard through poor quality news streams and illegal videos. Dabi - or as he's recently been revealed to be, Touya Todoroki.
Nedzu is ashamed to say he hadn't been aware of so, or any of Endeavors secrets at that. Regardless of how much he thought he knew, Revite never failed to prove he did not know everything.
"Revite is missing."
Dabi's voice is muffled by the door but still audible to an animal like Nedzu. The combination of intelligence and good ears has always been good for gossip.
He can't help but frown as he processes the man's words. Revite, of all people, is gone. He hadn't known this. It does explain why Dabi would be in the school. A sense of foolishness overcame him as he leaned closer to the door, desperate to hear more. If Revite was missing, something needed to be done. Perhaps he could help? Would it be worth interfering?
He listens in as Dabi and All Might exchange details; how long he's been gone for, who's looking for him, how All Might can help. After a few back and forth exchanges of words, All Might confirms he's aware of Revite's identity. Nedzu grins to himself out of self satisfaction. So he'd been right after all to assume so when Midoriya and All Might chatted the other day.
The things is, while Revite may always seem to know more about the hero system than Nedzu, at least the mouse-man had the privilege of knowing who the boy is. Midoriya stood out from the beginning with his late submission and quirklessness. It wasn't hard to connect him to the vigilante after the USJ, not when the boy had so many things about him that didn't make sense.
The best part was being aware of the fact the Midoriya knew he knew. Sometimes the boy would pass him in the school halls and his eyes would linger on him for a second, an analytical look gracing his features briefly before he'd turn away and head on with his day. Nedzu had seen that look before; recognized it for the cautious scan it was. Midoriya was waiting for what he'd do with the information he'd obtained.
He certainly wouldn't get one of those looks now with him being missing.
What surprised him in that moment was not All Might's apparent understanding of Revite's identity or the way Dabi casually dropped the name Izuku and brother, but instead the mention of Shouto Todoroki paired with the sound of his voice.
As with almost anything surrounding Revite, he'd guessed the Todoroki's had some close relation to Midoriya with the way they were mentioned in the Endeavor Article. It made sense the youngest Todoroki would be here to help Dabi meet with All Might.
Nedzu kept listening to the conversation he surely wasn't supposed to hear, making note of Dabi's cry for help. He heard All Might comfort him and offer his aid. It sounded like a contact was exchanged just before Dabi was excused.
As he heard footsteps approach the door, Nedzu contemplated staying in the open. Perhaps he could offer his own help? A flash thought passed through his mind; a picture of him sitting in a spinney chair and grinning up at whoever has Midoriya, saying something along the lines of so you captured one of my students.
Quickly, he pushed that thought away. If he was going to help, it'd be useful and strategic. That is, if he should help.
All Might's door opens and Dabi steps out into an empty hallway. From where he quickly ducked behind the opening door, Nedzu watches Dabi leave. Then, watches a few moments later as Todoroki leaves. The boy hesitates outside the door, before chasing after two general studies students.
Nedzu sighs. It isn't his place to meddle. As much as he wants to help, it's clear Revite has enough people scrambling to find him as is. He trusts the boy to get out without his help.
"Good luck," he says to no one in particular. He turns and makes his way back down the hall which he came.
Midoriya will be back in a few days. He's certain of it.
