Chapter 4
It's been a long drive, and of course I forgot to fill her up. My jeep, to be clear.
I pull up to a gas station that's decorated very... sketchy. But what the heck, I'm only going to get gas. Okay, and maybe some food. Which the prices for one tank of gas are shockingly expensive.
I head into the station, whereas a clerk is sleeping soundly with a hat on his face, laid back in a black leather office chair, the ones that spin.
My mouth moves to the side of my right cheek before I walk down the isles.
I grab drinks, snacks, then some food like cans of ravioli, crackers, egg salad sandwiches and lunchables. Don't judge me.
I bring the stuff up to the counter, the clerk still sleeping.
"Hey, sir. Wake up. I need to pay." I repeatedly tap the bell trying to see if he would wake up. But nothing.
"Ah, screw it." I slide the groceries under the pay scanner and bag the groceries.
As I'm heading to the jeep, I hear rustling in the trunk. It gets louder and I hurry to the front under my seat and grab my bat.
I hold it up in the air as I'm standing at the trunk.
It pops open really fast and as a reflex, I swing my bat, making the trunk fall back down and a girl yells.
"Ow! Hey!"
I scrunch my eyebrows and flip the trunk up.
And my ears were right. A girl is inside the trunk laying while holding her leg.
"You jammed my leg, where are your manners? You're lucky it's still attached." She says while groaning.
"New girl? What the hell are you doing here?" I ask surprised, and not in a good way.
"I.. um... couldn't find the bathroom." She interprets with an awkward tone, clearly lying.
"Does a jeep look like any kind of bathroom to you?" I ask rhetorically.
"You almost scared me to death."
She opens her mouth with an awkward expression, only to sigh. "Okay, maybe you should take it easy for now."
"Take it easy? I have a random girl from school riding on the back of my jeep and following me without me knowing until the last minute, and you're telling me to take it easy." I add bizarrely.
"Who are you? And no more lying because it won't work on me this time."
"Okay, jeez, dramatic much?" She interprets playfully with a chuckle.
I give her a serious glance, and she widens her eyes. "Okay, not the joking type. Got it."
She sighs, and starts to fiddle with her fingers.
"I'm sorry, am I boring you?" I ask her sarcastically.
"No, actually, um, you're not, it's just... well, nothing."
I walk away from her as I load the trunk with the groceries.
"So, uh.. where're you headed off to?" She asks prancing around.
"It's none of your business, okay?" I tell her, annoyed.
"Wow, really? That's such a coincidence, I was just on my way heading there too." She informs sarcastically enthusiastic.
"Look, I don't know who you are, but what I do know is I don't have the time to dilly dally right now. Just go back to where you came from... which was on the back of my trunk." I add, weirded out just by thinking about it.
She smirks. I turn back and get in the front seat, then shut the door.
I hear a jump and look to the passenger seat only to see her sitting inside. A smile playing on her face.
"Was I not clear about the "going away" bit?"
"Yes, that was clear. But see, now I'm actually the type that when I make a friend, I stay forever. So get used to it, buddy, 'cause from now on you're stuck with me." She pats me on the shoulder and adjusts herself in the seat before looking out the window.
"Bad news for you; I'm not looking for friends right now."
"You know, what is your problem? I'm just trying to be civil."
"I'm pretty sure you didn't think about that before you hitched hike on Roscoe." I glance at her.
She chuckles. "Roscoe"?
"So I name my jeep. You probably name your hairbrush."
"Yes. "Haddy the Hairbrush." She says, playfully.
"Just so you know, where I'm going, it's not going to be pretty. It might change my life and possibly your life."
"Don't worry. You'll see know how tough I can be." She crosses her arms, making it clear she's not going anywhere.
"Alright, suit yourself." I stare for just a little bit.
"Well, come on, drive." She gestures for me to steer.
I can't believe I'm taking a girl, who didn't even tell me her name yet, to possibly be slaughtered by the chaos back at home.
I can't pinpoint it, but there's something about her that drives me.
