Le cœur a ses raisons que la raison ne connaît point

The heart has its reasons of which reason knows nothing

"Mr. Jeon, may I have a word with you before Ms. Oh is discharged?"

Jungkook nodded at the doctor and took a glance at me before leaving the room. I would have been suspicious if the doctor's eyes weren't glowing purple. There was no harm now.

"Ohoho," a giggle made me snap my head and find the hazel haired Virtue sitting beside me on the bed with an amused grin. "I see how you've become."

My eyes narrowed threateningly. "Get out of my sight."

"I just wanted to check on you. Why are you always so mean to me?" She sighed and shook her head with her eyes closed. "I see that you've risked yourself to save him?"

I froze, feeling caught in my vulnerable state when she knew that. "I just didn't want him to die before I could do what I had to do."

Her lips tugged downwards and she took a second to process. "I see."

"Why did you choose him?" I finally spilled the question I was asking myself for over thousands of times, but every time I did, the answer was never the same. "Why him of all people?"

"Jeon Jungkook?" She raised an eyebrow as if she wasn't expecting that. "No reason. As I told you before, he's just a difficult task so you can prove your point well."

"He's supposed to be a difficult task... not an impossible one," I whispered to myself but she apparently caught that.

"Why? Have you changed your mind?!"

I scoffed immediately. "Of course not. Don't be ridiculous."

She hummed, stroking her chin and giving me a serious look. "Just so you remember. There's no forgiveness once he commits a sin, so he will end up in hell in the end no matter what happens when you do uphold your end of the bargain. That's how it works in agreements."

As if the temperature of the room had dropped, cold shivers enveloped me at the harsh reminder.

"...Yes."

That was how it was.

"One ice cream sundae and one cookies and cream ice cream cake. Enjoy."

"Thank you," Jungkook said to the waitress who winked back at him.

"Anything for you," she practically purred.

Oh wow...

Jungkook was visibly taken aback, clearing his throat and fixing his gaze on me to escape. I wondered if he experienced things like this often because of his handsome yet adorable face and built body, attracting people left and right.

"Uh, can you leave?" I frowned at her before she could run her bony fingers on his shoulder and say something that would make him more uncomfortable, and she looked me up and up before walking away, swinging her hips.

Since this was a place I frequented, I would have to make sure to get her fired.

"Aren't you tired of eating that sundae all the time?" Jungkook asked, stopping my train of thought. "Why don't you try this one or literally anything else?"

"I'm a very loyal girl," I chuckled, scooping my ice cream. "Once I like something, I never choose anything else, so thanks but no thanks."

He watched me eat a few spoonfuls with a strange, unknown expression before muttering, "I see."

"Well, I'd like to try some mochi ice cream sometime," I admitted sheepishly, earning small chuckles from him.

Soft, cheerful songs were playing inside the cafe and the place was vibrant and buoyant with youthful spirits and friends chatting and laughing with each other. The smell was heavenly, a mix of everything sweet and gratifying that tickles the insides and charms the senses. It was a simple joy of living.

A sudden curiosity bubbled inside me and I watched Jungkook with inquiring eyes.

"Do you know there are seven deadly sins?"

He protruded his lips into a pout, thinking for a moment. "Yeah?"

"If you were a sinner, which sin do you think you would commit?"

Chuckling softly, he asked, "Why?"

"I don't know. Just curious, you know?" I flashed a grin and put out my hand to count. "Not sloth. Not pride. Not greed. Gluttony?"

"Hey," he exclaimed, widening his doe eyes, "I eat to my stomach size, okay?"

I narrowed my eyes playfully at him. "Sure you do. The size of a black hole, that is."

He shot me a glare and pouted, making me throw my hands in defense.

"Okay okay. Not gluttony. Not lust..." I drawled, eyeing him to find a reaction he didn't give in the end, just an awkward smile. "Envy?"

He shook his head silently. I knew he was nothing but kind to the others and it surprised me all the time. I was beginning to think he was an actual angel until I came to the last one.

"Wrath! You were so mad at me after the talent show!"

"But I never harmed anyone by being angry," he defended to which I rolled my eyes.

"Uh-huh. Getting me hit by a car!"

His eyes turned as wide as saucers and he pursed his lips, suddenly making me feel guilty for bringing that up. I was just fine already and it wasn't intentional.

"Sorry I didn't- That was my fault... I was just mad when you suddenly did that to me and I thought that was the reason you approached and befriended me in the first place," he confessed in a soft, low voice, lowering his gaze to the floor. "You're... special to me, and I liked what we had. I was afraid of it being fake when you did that."

I swallowed thickly, feeling like I betrayed his trust. If he knew the reason I approached him...

Taking his hand in mine, I squeezed it before giving him a reassuring smile. "I'm sorry for what I did. You're very special to me, too. I wouldn't befriend you to do that, heavens no. You're an amazing human being, Kookie, and I'm grateful to have met you."

He bit his lips before playing with the hair above his ear with his free hand, and I could swear that his cheeks were dusted pink.

"I'll do my best to make it up to you for all the things that happened because of me," he said with so much sincerity, warming my heart. "I couldn't tell you this before but a close cousin of mine is getting married a few days from now and Bambam and Jia are coming to the ceremony. It's only right to invite you, too, since you're my friend."

I nodded. "Will your parents be there, too?"

His eyes fell on his ice cream cake. A beat of silence passed and I was beginning to regret mentioning them by accident. "Sorry, I didn't mean to invade your private life."

"I don't know, actually. They wouldn't want to run into each other, so they might not show up anyway," he said under his breath and smiled softly. "You're the only one who knows about my parents. For everyone else, I just lie that they're always on a business trip overseas so they wouldn't bother. It would be embarrassing."

I couldn't respond to that.

It wasn't embarrassing. It was rather... unfortunate.

My stomach suddenly growled so loudly and so horridly even when I was eating something, and I hugged my torso, baffled.

Jungkook broke into laughter, his eyes forming crescents. "Are you hungry?"

"I don't know?"

"I'll cook when we get back to the dorms."

A small smile tugged my lips, happy that I got to taste his cooking again.
