Chapter Twenty-Two: Return
I could hear the faint calling of my name, it sounded far. But it began to grow louder and louder with each time it was spoken. Soon enough, I could distinguish the voice of who was calling my name. It was that of Matthew. Dream's raven. The black abyss that I saw began to lighten as my eyes began to flutter open to see Matthew oh my knees staring at me with his black eyes.
"You're awake!" He exclaims, flapping his wings, and cawing at me.
"Calm your wings," I replied, shifting my weight up to lean more against the back wall. My eyes focused past the boxes that had fallen down, and I could see the unconscious Dream. "Fuck," I breathed out, as this was not good. Whatever happened with Dream's ruby, someone managed to alter it. Obeying its current master. I leaned forward, feeling the aches I currently had, but Matthew flapped his wings and moved from my legs.
"You have been out for hours," Matthew states, cocking his head between Dream and myself. I stood to my feet, wobbling slightly, but found my footing. A handful of the boxes were scattered around Dream. I waved both of my hands out, and as I did the action both of my palms sprouted the red energy. The red energy wrapped around the boxes, and followed suit with my action, as they were thrown to the side even more. Clearing them from Dream.
"Dream," I staggered forward, coming closer to his body, before crouching down as I was behind him. "Dream!" I shook him to try and wake him up, but he would not wake. She grabs him, and pulls him to his back, so he is now facing up. I looked down at him, and slapped him across his face. It wasn't soft either. But he just remained in his slumber.
"Hey!" Matthew states, not liking that I whacked Dream in the face.
"Be glad it wasn't my fist," I snapped back at Matthew, taking a brief glance at him, and then back at Dream. He looked ever so peaceful unconscious. "That ruby did a number on him," I announced to Matthew, as there wasn't much I could do. "Matthias-" I cut myself off, as I realised that I spoke Matthias's name not Matthew's.
"Who is Matthias?!" Matthew responded looking curious as he could for a bird.
"No one," I shot back quickly, not wanting to bring up my former lover. "And if you ask again, I will pluck your feathers, and cook you," my voice darkened, as I was threatening Matthew. He became quiet, and turned his beady gaze away from me and to his master.
"You know a way to wake him?!" Matthew was quick on the draw, wanting to know how to wake Dream from this.
"Oh yeah," I replied. "Let me just give him a kiss and he'll spring back into action," my expression and tone was full of sarcasm.
"Sarcasm, really?" Matthew wasn't impressed by my sudden change to sarcasm.
"I don't have a handbook for The Endless," I shot at him, but even everything I know about them. Nothing is useful while he's in this state. "All you can do is wait," I state, but he suddenly clicked with the word I spoke.
"Me?! Where are you going?" Matthew rushes out, not liking the idea of being left alone with Dream.
"I have my own thing to do," I didn't give Matthew enough time to respond as I stood up from crouching, and walked away from the scene. Stepping over Dream, and out of the open door of the container we were in. I knew who I had to call upon, as they know everything...
......................
Once outside of the container, light rain fell from above. It was still night, but soon dawn would come. I pondered on who I was calling, for sure Lucifer would have sent word and it would only be a matter of time till they came.
"I, Lady of Chaos, summon my creators," my voice rang freely through the night air. "Lords of Chaos heed my call, as I summon you to the mortal realm for guidance at this time," the sky above grew cloudy, and turned red as lightning shot through the sky. A red diamond cube floated from the red cloud, and down to in front of me. I bowed my head in the presence of one of the Lords of Chaos.
"Why have you summoned me?" The cube spoke, as it flashed red with each word it spoke.
"It is about Dream of the Endless," I raised my head up to look at one of my creators.
"We know you are consorting with one of the Endless," he sounded monotone, not really emitting any emotion on the matter. "And to make matters even worse. You are helping him to rebuild his realm. Where, if rebuilt, the chaos his absence has brought would cease," now I could tell he wasn't pleased with what I was doing.
"But my Lord-"
"Silence!" He spoke, making me seal my lips, and listen to what he had to say. "Your lack of judgement since you abandoned your Realm has grown exponentially. We pardoned you as we thought that your time in the Mortal realm would cause more chaos and for a time it did... But here you are," though the Lord of Chaos has no facial expressions, I knew he wasn't in the best mood with me. "Let his realm be destroyed. Let him be destroyed. That is an order!" Even I had to accept this, I could not risk being killed by my creators. They would not simply kill me, they would prolong the torment, and the agony it would bring. "Your time in the mortal realm has made you weak. So from here on out, you will return to thy realm, and take the mantle of Queen once again,"
"Yes, my Lord," my voice was low, as I bowed my head once again, and I noticed the red light from the ground began to fade, meaning he was going back to where he resides with the other Lords of Chaos. I raised my head once the coast was clear, and stared up at the sky to see the clouds recede, and become a clear night once again.
"Fuck," I breathed out, almost in a whisper. I couldn't just leave Dream in the state he was in. This wouldn't be the first time I disobeyed.
I turned around to head back into the shipping container, but stopped myself from moving forward. The words of one of my creators echoed out in my head. Though he was Dream of the Endless, a far more powerful being than me, with a realm or not. Or his tools, he could make do. He could survive this, without me. Without the help of me, Lady Chaos. The least I could do is say my farewells.
With one foot in front of the other, I walked back into the container and saw Matthew stare at me as I came around the corner. Where Dream still lay unconscious.
"I heard," Matthew's voice was low, but caws after he finished speaking, but I couldn't be angry with him. "You abandoned your realm. And now you have to go back. Why?" He sounded surprised at the fact.
"I'm sorry but I have to leave," I dismissed his question, as I could not answer it right now.
"Leave?! But he needs you!" Matthew exclaimed, but I couldn't help but chuckle at the fact that Dream needed help.
"The Lord of Dreams depends on no one. I came along to fill my desire of watching him suffer, I had no intent of helping him," I laughed at the end of my sentence, eyes locking with Matthew.
"I don't believe that," he said, catching me off guard, but I didn't let it show.
"Believe what you want, bird," I snapped back. "I have a realm to attend," I strode forward, but Matthew flapped his wings and quickly came in front of me. But with a single wave of my right hand to the right, a wave of red energy generated mid and hit him, sending him flying to the side and out of my way. Without a second thought, I left the container behind, and that of Dream.
Each step I took, my mind replayed the moments we had together. How we met all those years ago, how I waltzed into his realm, and agreed to help him. How we found Constantine and how we got his sand back. Then to Hell to get his helm. It was fun, for me at least.
I could not disobey my creators...
