Chapter Seven: Cain & Abel

The three of us walked from the crumbling palace, and out into the world of Dreams. The realm was in decay, and totally Barron. But as we walked through the Kingdom, we came upon a small patch of land owned by Brothers, the very first siblings in all of creation. Cain and Abel, not only were they the first brothers, but they also were the first murderer, and victim. It's going to be awkward to see them again. Why did you think Cain killed Abel...

In the distance I could see two houses, separated from one another, one belonging to one sibling. The thick fog shrouded the surrounding area, that's how bad the realm has come too. The untame environment. The realm was in need of a good fix up. We came to a small bridge that led to the houses, and both brothers stood nearby to greet us.

"Cain. Abel," Dream's voice carried through the air, as he walked first, as Lucienne was to his left, and I was to his right. It was like we were his entourage.

"Lord Morpheus," Cain states in shock, as he grabs the glasses from his face and takes them off.

"You've come back," Cain announces, both brothers looking relieved and hopeful their master had returned.

"At last,"

"I told you he'd return,"

"I never doubted it," Cain retorted as they were doing what all siblings do. However, their eyes wandered over to me, as I met them when they were far younger. "Lady Chaos, it has been awhile," Cain looked up at my figure, his eyes gawking at what he had missed all these centuries.

"You look good milady," sweet Abel came clean.

"Hello boys," I offered a flirtatious smile, grabbing a strand of my hair, and twirled it in my finger. "You both look..." I paused for a moment, taking in their appearances, as they had gotten old since I saw them last. "Old," I dropped the flirty smile, and put my hand back down to my side, giving them hope that I would compliment their appearance. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Morpheus, and Lucienne have their gazes upon me. And it felt like they were trying to dig their way through the side of my skull. "But... It's good to see you," I had to force those words out, though I didn't really mean it. Small smiles replaced their gloomy expressions.

"Come in, my Lord, Milady, and you, Lucienne. To the House of Mystery," Cain invited us into his home as his eyes travelled among the three of us as he spoke our names, and twisting his body and extending his hand out to his house.

"Or the House of Secrets. I have tea," Abel twisted his body the opposite way, and extended his hand out to his own home.

"I have tea and biscuits," Cain bickered back to his brother, and it's still enjoyable to watch them trying to win over their master. They were like that with me once, they couldn't get enough.

"Genetlemen, I'm afraid this is not a social call," Luicenne butted into their bickering, and brought their attention back to the matter of why we were here.

"What's happened?"

"Is something wrong?"

"Whart is it?" It was like they were finishing each other's sentences in a way.

"For the sake of The Dreaming, I must take back a gift I gave you long ago," Dream spoke the truth, and his tone was dead serious. Even on the way here, I protested at the fact that Cain would not like the idea.

"Yes, my Lord," Abel bows his head ever so slightly, agreeing to whatever he needs he could have it.

"What's ours is yours,"

"Anything at all,"

"Just ask it," again with the addition of each other's sentences. Dream began to explain the situation to them, and what he needed for him to complete the task at hand. I could see the look on Cain's face that he was distraught, but also angry. Abel was also distraught, but he was more saddened than angry about it. They willingly took us to the den area where this 'Gregory' was actually a Gargoyle.

I stared at this winged-creature with curiosity, as he jumped around his little play area, and tossed a ball around. He nudged the ball with his snout, and jumped, flapping his wings to pounce on the ball. It was kind of adorable to watch.

"Surely there's another way," Abel states, wanting a way out of this, a way they could keep Gregory as a pet.

"I wish there were," Dream states, as the brothers were behind him, and Lucienne and I stood near one another. "But The Dreaming must be restored," Dream didn't make eye contact with the brothers, he just watched the creature play.

"You say that as if we're the ones that destroyed it," Cain states in a low tone. "As if we disappeared for over a century," Cainwas in full honest mode right now, and I was living for it.

"Cain," Lucienne spoke his name sternly, warning him in a way not to press on.

"You forget yourself, Cain," Dream turned his head to lock eyes with the man.

"No, my Lord, you forgot us," he clapped back, Cain was always hot headed, and straight to the point. "Do you have any idea what we've already lost waiting for you to come back after all these years?" Cain wasn't going to let this rest, he was going to fight.

"What you have lost?" Dream questioned, knowing that his loss was greater than his.

"The answer is no," Cain was making a decision that wasn't his to give.

"I have not come here to ask you... I've come to ask Gregory," Dream wanted to ask the creature directly. Suddenly, leaves rustled under the small ball's weight as it hit the black shoe of Dream. He turns with his head down to see Gregory bouncing and playing around with the bigger ball. Dream crouches down and picks up the smaller one, before standing back up and saunting over to the creature.

"I need your help," Dream states to Gregory, and the beast bows its head, knowing what he was asking of him.

"Gregory, stop. No," Cain dashed forward as he spoke the words, coming in between Dream and Gregory, Cain joining him. "Take me instead. Or Abel," he offered up his own brother, and even pushed him forward. Who needs reality TV when you get this!

"Yeah, take me, Lord Morpheus, please," Abel kindly begged for him to take the beloved creature's place.

"I cannot. I can only reabsorb that which I have created, and Gregory began as a Nightmare," Morpheus spoke with little rise in his tone of voice.

"Yes, but he's one of us now. It's not fair," Cain's voice broke as he spoke the words, he was just also fighting the tears back. Attachment is really the worst feeling ever, but also fun to watch.

"No... It's not," Dream agreed with them, and he didn't want to do this, but he had too. For the sake of his realm, for a better life. I scoffed, rolling my eyes at the scene, gaining a disapproving look off of Luicenne.

"If it was up to me. The beast would be dead by now," I spoke just loud enough for Lucienne to hear, but I imagine Dream also caught on. I watched as Abel took his turn in saying goodbye to his beloved friend, and then it was Cain's turn. He wasn't so willing to admit defeat yet, but he had too, and gave Gregory a hug. I wasn't really paying attention, because creatures like that only had one purpose. To fight and die if need be. That's what my creatures did, they fought, and died to protect their Queen.

I see Dream kneeling to the ground, as Gregory placed all four legs onto the ground. Making eye contact with his creator and master.

"You have served this Kingdom with great honour. You will be missed," I hear Dream give the creature a send off. Cain and Abel were at the side, not facing what was about to happen next. Even Lucienne was saddened by it. Dream raised his right arm up, holding his hand out. Gregory began to disintegrate, and fly into the palm of Dream, as he was absorbing the nightmare back into him. It looked like sand, funny enough, but the creature allowed it to happen. Soon enough, there was nothing left, the beast was absorbed and no longer living.

Dream stood to his feet, and I noticed the patch of red flowers that Dream had placed where the creature was. He stood there for a moment, reflecting on what he had done, but he needed to press on.

"Come, Lucienne, Calliope," he turned sharply, and began to walk our way. Even from that one creature, I could tell his power grew, not a lot but enough. "We have work to do," he went on, passing the both of us, but even from a single passing. I could see the colour back in his skin, he was no longer pale like a ghost. He might not have liked doing that, but it was necessary, and the right thing to do.

With a small amount of his power back, we could move onto the next phase of the plan. Getting offerings for the Fates, they never show if you don't offer them something nice. I know that all too well...
