Chapter Eleven: Doubt

*Chaos Realm*

Lady Chaos did not know what to do with Matthias, and that was surprising to her. Being alive for millions of years, always precise in her decisions. This one did not sit well, and her mind could not be made up. The first few months, she allowed him to rot in the dungeons, to suffer the fate he tried to impose on her. Day after day, she would hear him call her name, not by her statues, but by the name he had given her. Calliope.

At first it sounded strange to her ears, like it would make her more human if she had a name to call. But he was relentless, and kept calling her the name. It would echo through the halls, and every time she passed the dungeons. She stopped herself from going down there to see him, he needed to stew in the torment.

Lady Chaos sat at her throne, the Darkhold floating in front of her, as she was using it to call upon her creators. She needed guidance, as if she was a child again calling upon her Father. The Queen inhaled some air, as her creators - Lords of Chaos were more ruthless than her when it came to humanity.

"I, Lady Chaos, Queen of the Chaos realm, summon my creators. Lords of Chaos," her voice was smooth and precise. "I seek thy guidance in my time of need," she raises her hands out, as red energy laces her palms, and suddenly a large red diamond shaped cake floats down from the ceiling, and into her throne room. The three diamond shapes swirled around one another before, coming to Lady Chaos's eye level and floated there. Red flames produced from the tip of the diamond, soaring high.

"Why have you summoned us?" The first diamond spoke, and it flashed a lighter red with each word it spoke as if it was alive.

"My Lords, I have stumbled upon a predicament," she states, knowing that her creators needed to know. "Mortals have tried to summon, and bind me to do their bidding," the words rolled off her tongue with ease, as she's had time to process this. However, the Lords remain quiet, probably speaking to one another privately.

"Seeing you here means they did not succeed," the second Lord spoke, after a moment, his voice deep. "If the mortals successfully trap and bind you, and by the Laws we can not do a thing. The consequences could be phenomenal," if this scenario ever came to pass, the damages one could do with Lady Chaos at their side could be endless.

"I know my Lords," she replies, rising from her throne, and the Darkhold moves to the left of her. "There is also a human who I captured. He was one of the instigators who tried to summon me," she descended down the steps, and stared up at her creators.

"Kill him," the words she feared came to light, and without hesitation. "If he no longer lives, he poses no threat," the first diamond states. And Lady Chaos' expression turned to one they had not seen before. Doubt. "You do remember the last time you did not follow an order," the Queen's expression quickly changed to discourage their worries about her not following this through.

"I will have great pleasure in killing him," a smirk appeared on her lips.

"We will see to the other culprit," the Lords of Chaos had their own resources, and power to do what they could. And Lady Chaos never sought to ask what methods they used. Suddenly, the three diamond shaped orbs floated back up into the sky, disappearing through the ceiling and back to their own realm.

The smirk faded from lips, and doubt came flooding back in. Why was she feeling this way? Killing was in her nature. So why have doubts now? She was going to finally talk to him.

The Queen threw her skirt back, as she walked forward as if she was asserting dominance when she walked to her dungeon.

The groans and moans of the prisoners echoed as she descended down the hallway, down the finally lit stone corridor that was eerily different to the rest of the palace. You don't sunshine and rainbows, when your torturing people. She came into the massive room, and went to the very cell he was placed in four months ago.

The Queen eyed up the back wall, as this time, he was literally chained to it. His arms and legs spread apart by these old looking chains, the aesthetic was important. He was wearing rags, dirty and smelt of shit.

"Calliope," he spoke with a small amount of glee, finding her here to mean something.

"That is not my name," she responded with a stern tone, not wanting to delude this fantasy of his. "The Lords of Chaos have decided your fate, and it is death," she didn't coat this, she was direct with him. "And they want me to do it," she turned her eyes away from him, not wanting to meet their opposite gaze.

"But you will not," it was more of a statement than a question, because he knew; no he felt that she would not harm him. Even after what she saw, she couldn't bring herself.

"Why is this so difficult!" She raised her voice in frustration. "For millions of years I have done what is required of me. Done my duty and in all that time I never faulted," the Queen admits, bringing her attention back to Matthias. "And you drop into my throne room, and everything has changed. I am in doubt of what to do with you, while disobeying my creators," it was more emotional than Matthias has seen since his arrival.

"Deep down, you know why," he retorts with a simple honest tone. Maybe deep down she knew why, and was afraid to admit it.

"In all my years," she began, her voice and gaze soft to him. "No one, not even my most loyal servants, have ever given me a name. I was always there Queen or Majesty, or simply known as Lady Chaos," he breathed out her tone smooth. "You are the first to even speak a name. You are unique. Loyalty is a quality that is hard to come by on its own," they remained quiet, just stared at one another intently, the tension between them was not that of hate or anger, it was something else that Lady Chaos has not felt.

Suddenly, she raised her left hand up and a ball of energy laced her palm. She simply flicked her wrist out, the chains that bound him unclasped and dropped him to the ground, and the bars of the cell, vanishing in red mist.

"I made my decision," she lowered her hand down, and entered the cell, looking down on the weak Matthias. She extends her hand out to him, not saying another word, just holding her hand out for him to take. He was hesitant at first, thinking that this was a trick, but in reality it wasn't. After a moment, he plants his hand into hers and she helps him to stand to his feet.

"Does this mean I live?" Matthias questions with a smirk on his lips.

"For now," she gave him a pointed look, and a small smile. A genuine smile, she didn't think she could produce one. "Lords of Chaos will not be pleased. But what they do not know, will not hurt them," she spoke, knowing that if they found out of this discretion it would surely end badly. So, for now this was their secret.

..................

A mere year passed, and things in the Palace were interesting to say the least. Matthias had more freedom of the castle, finding all the wonders, but also the danger that lurked around every corner. Some rooms were off limits, but he made do with what he had.

Nothing really changed in the Queen's daily tasks, but with each day that passed and more she got to know about Matthias. She began to care for him, and began to feel things she's never felt in her life. It was an odd experience but she was living every moment she could have with him. Feeling almost... Human.

The doors to the throne room shot open, allowing her majesty to float on through without a problem. She just came from the library, getting a book so she could do some research. As she raises her eyes up from the floor, she notices an audience in her throne room. An elderly looking man bound in chains, wore rags, and was bloody all over. Above him was one of the floating diamond shapes.

"Milord," Lady Chaos states, bowing her head ever so slightly in his presence. "What is this?" She questions without the judging tone that could be related to such a question.

"The man who ostracised your capture," the diamond spoke, flashing a lighter red than its base colour. "We have gathered all the information we can from the mortal. Now, you can do with whatever pleases you," the Lord of Chaos floated closer to the Queen, as a wicked smile came to her lips.

"It will be my great pleasure," she bows her head, accepting the gift that the entity was offering. Without another word, the diamond shape floated up into the ceiling, and vanished through it, returning back to where they come from. Lady Chaos's eyes returned to the mortal on the floor. She looks at him with anger, and Matthias didn't really talk about 'that night', as she just wanted to put it past them. But with the person who conducted the plan, she can ask all she wants.

"You wanted an audience with Chaos," she began, swaying her hips forward. "You have one," she was smug as she spun around to face the bleeding man. He slowly raised his head up, and peered into her eyes.

"Yo-You," he spoke weakly, barely forming his words.

"Expecting a man?" She retorted with an arched eyebrow, but his face gave it away. "Typical," with the anger pent up, she uses her foot to kick the man back, and he falls to the ground with a thud. No attempt to stop himself from falling. "You could say I am their voice in the mortal world. The one that courts chaos," she straightened herself back up. "Here you are in the realm of Chaos, a prisoner and your stay here will not be pleasant," her voice deepened as she was threatening him.

With a wave of her hand, the man faded into mist, and was sent to the dungeons. Then the real fun could begin. However, the Queen noticed something off, as if she was being watched.

"I know you're here," she breathed out softly, turning towards the grand door, but to the pillars that were placed in the throne room. Just then, Matthias steps out from hiding, wearing his simple Greek robe.

"That was Vassilis the high Priest. What is he doing here?" Matthias kept his level head and walked towards Lady Chaos.

"The Lords of Chaos have graciously handed him over to me, to do what I see fit," she spoke through clenched teeth, finding the mere idea of being captured and held against her will unnerving.

"But he is just a desperate man, Calliope," Matthias used her name he had given her. And over the year, she grew fond of it. "Just let him go," she tilts her head slightly, giving him a bizarre expression.

"If I let him go then what is stopping him from trying again?" She rushes out the words, finding that the priest would not be so open to stop trying. "Every mortal is the same. There are only a few like you. He would turn on his own flesh and blood if he was given the chance," Lady Chaos knew first hand what humanity is capable of, and there were only a few true good people in the world.

But even now she knew Matthias wouldn't give up in the priest's release. The only way she could convince him that Vassilis would return to his ways, was to show him...
