XXVIII
Finally, the date that I had been waiting so long for had finally arrived.
Xavier was at another early morning meeting, but at least that had given me the chance to get ready for our date later today. He refused to tell me what we were doing on the date, so I was unsure about what to wear. I felt as if we had wound the clock back to that one Friday when we were supposed to go on a date- the day of the panic attack.
My hair was damp, since I had already showered and followed the mini routine that Heather had created for me for special occasions, applying a tiny amount of concealer to my moisturiser and rubbing it onto my face and neck. I was pretty bad at makeup, so I had to wipe the excess out of my eyebrows with a face wipe.
Looking at my reflection in the mirror, I suddenly felt nervous. Did I look good? I decided to just FaceTime Heather to put my nerves at ease, whipping out my phone and tapping her contact. It took a while for her to answer and when she did, my eyebrows shot up.
"I thought you said you weren't pursuing!" I exclaimed, noticing that she was in a guy's bed.
"Yeah, well... Things change. What do you need?" She huffed, pulling the duvet further up her neck to hide what was underneath.
A fruitless act in my opinion, considering that I had seen what was under that duvet first hand before.
"Do I look alright? I've got my date with Xavier today." I decided to ignore whatever was happening on her end- she'd tell me eventually.
"You look great, Cameron." Heather cooed, "If he breaks your heart, I'll break his kneecaps."
I laughed to myself at the irony of Heather thinking that she could take on a mega tall werewolf, which earned me a glare from her. She didn't understand why I found it so funny, but even her trying to take on a human Xavier would be pretty comical, let alone a werewolf.
"Thanks, Heather." I waved goodbye, hanging up.
I took my duffle bag of clothes to the bathroom, pulling out the outfit that Heather had picked out for me to wear on the last date Xavier and I had planned. It hadn't served its purpose back then, so I was going to use it now.
I checked myself out in the bedroom mirror when I was sure I was finished and stilled at my reflection.
The fact that I was finally going on a date with Xavier Evans hit me like a tonne of bricks and I felt a little breathless. After all of the anticipation, the pain and uncertainty, the moment was finally here. I wasn't sure how I felt about that because all I could feel right now were nerves, so it was hard to distinguish any other emotion. However, I'm pretty sure there was some excitement in the mix, too.
"You look amazing." A voice breathed from the doorway, making me jump.
With all of the nerves and my preoccupation with the mirror reflection, I hadn't even sensed that Xavier was home. I looked him up and down, appreciating how he looked right now. He was dressed in simple black jeans and a long sleeve top, the sleeves pushed up to reveal his tattoos. It was effortless, but sexy and put together; I had a hard time taking my eyes off of him.
"I did my best to keep up with the big dog." I shrugged, a smile playing on my lips.
"Keep up with me? You're deluded." Xavier flirted, "You're clearly the hottest guy on the planet, don't be humble."
"Ladies, Ladies, you're both pretty." Noah appeared from down the hallway, pushing past Xavier into the room, "Now can you grab that file so I can get back to my own mate?"
I blushed, embarrassed that Noah had walked in on our flirting. We were still in the early stages of our relationship, so our flirting sucked to be quite frank. We hadn't established the steady groundwork that it takes to build up a sexual rapport, so our game was weak and now Noah was going to think that our flirting skills were weak. In actuality, my flirting skills were off the chart- I just didn't know how to behave around Xavier.
"Noah, I'm going to ban you from my house soon." Xavier groaned, "I told you to wait outside."
"And miss meeting your wonderful mate again? No chance." Noah wiggled his eyebrows, "Plus, knowing you, you would just get distracted and take forever getting that file."
Xavier stormed over to his dressing table, picking up said file and handing it to Noah with a glare. Noah rolled his eyes at Xavier's glare, sending me a bright smile as he excused himself from the room.
"I'm sorry about him... Again." Xavier sighed, "Are you ready to go?"
I simply nodded and he gently took my hand, making me blush as we left the house. Xavier finally had his own car back, but not without a struggle and a dramatic farewell from Noah. We climbed in and set off, the music playing softly in the background as he drove.
"Can I know what we're doing today, yet?" I pleaded, since he hadn't given me any hints at all.
"Well, I was trying to think of a unique date that seemed 'Cameron White' enough. I didn't want to do some basic dinner and a movie thing- that just didn't seem like your style." Xavier began to explain, "That's when I remembered that your bar trip with your friends was cut short: I thought that we could do a bar crawl."
"You're driving." I pointed out, but a smile was playing on my lips. A bar crawl seemed like genuine fun.
"Noah's going to collect it from the first pub and pick us up from wherever we end up later." Xavier answered my unspoken question, which was good enough for me.
"Somebody's put a lot of thought into this." I teased, "When did you get the downtime to plan all of this?"
"A lot of daydreaming between pack meetings."
I chuckled at that, squeezing his hand to say a silent thank you. I had a bubble of excitement building in my chest now that I knew what we were doing. He was right, I wasn't much of a dinner and a movie type of person, so a pub crawl sounded perfect. All I wanted, after all, was to have fun with Xavier while getting to know him.
"First stop, the pub you were at the other night." Xavier announced, pulling into the car park.
I went to open my own door, but Xavier put a hand up. Doing as he said, I sat patiently while he jogged over to my side of the car. The doors opened automatically, but he held out a hand to help me out of the car.
"What a gentleman." I praised, a teasing tone in my voice.
"Only for you, baby." He winked, making my stomach erupt in butterflies.
He laced his fingers with mine as we walked inside, slipping into a booth. My eyebrows furrowed as a guy brought us our drinks to the table- that certainly wasn't normal. I had been here a thousand times and they definitely didn't do table service. Like every other normal pub, you had to go to the bar to order your drink.
"Pack member." Xavier whispered, noticing my confusion.
My mouth formed an 'o' shape, surprised. I knew Xavier's pack was large, but I couldn't believe just how many people in town were a part of it. I had been coming here for years, acting like an idiot with my friends and using fake ID's to buy drinks long before I was eighteen. I was none the wiser that the owner was a damn werewolf.
"How many pack members are there." Clearly, I was flabbergasted- it seemed like the whole town were werewolves.
"In our pack? Four hundred and fifty something- if you count children. I would have a precise number for you, but the figure's constantly changing. Children are born into the pack, people leave to join their mate at a different pack- that sort of stuff." Xavier guessed.
"Wow. That's a lot of responsibility." I breathed, "Isn't it intimidating? Especially when a lot of them are older than you."
"I'm not sure- I've been prepping for this ever since I was a child. It is a lot of responsibility, but I'm slowly getting the hang of it."
"I seriously admire you, Xavier."
"Thanks, Cam." He beamed, "Your opinion means more to me than anything else."
"If that was coming from anybody else, I'd think they were being sarcastic." I chuckled.
"What can I say? You make me sappy."
Looking up at Xavier through my lashes, a bashful smile spread across my face. He took a slow sip of his pint, staring into my eyes deeply. The sexual tension in the air was thick and I bit my lip thinking about how tonight may end.
"So when I meet your parents, is there anything I need to know?" My nervousness was apparent in my voice.
"Try not to overthink it, baby. Just be yourself and they'll love you."
Whenever he called me baby, my pulse skyrocketed. The way it rolled off of his tongue casually while sounding so deep and sexy drove me insane.
"Time to head to the next destination, methinks. Last one to finish their drink has to share a secret?" Xavier waged.
"Bet." I smirked, tilting my glass and gulping down the rest of the liquid.
Xavier was faster, making the liquid practically disappear into thin air. I choked, spluttering on my drink- I was usually the fastest out of my friends.
"Spill your secrets then, Cameron." Xavier smirked.
"I don't know how to use a washing machine." I revealed the first one that came to mind, making Xavier splutter with laughter.
"What?" He cackled, looking at me incredulously.
"I've never used one." I shrugged, "Mum always did it."
We slid out of the booth, Xavier still laughing at the fact that I don't know how to do a basic household chore. As we left the pub, I remembered that it was still broad daylight. The inside of the pub was so dark that I had forgotten, so the bright sun was incredibly violating against my eyes- sort of like when you leave the cinema and it's still bright out.
"The day's still young! One down, many more to go." Xavier cheered, drawing attention to us.
"One drink and you're already loosening up." I tutted, "Imagine how you'll be acting by the end of the date."
"Hopefully I'll be drunk enough to finally make a move." He jested at his own expense, winking at me.
He grabbed my hand, linking his fingers with mine as we skipped down the road together. The sun was on my face and Xavier's hand was in mine, so the whole world felt perfect. As we walked, we got to know each other a bit more and he told me more about the pack.
We must have visited seven or eight pubs after that, having a drink in each and every one of them. At the last pub, I managed to convince Xavier to do shots with me; He was pretty impressed that I could keep up with a werewolf, considering their alcohol tolerance was a lot higher, but I was impressed that he could keep up with me.
By the time we stumbled out of the last pub, it was closing hours. I was giggling at everything Xavier said, holding onto him to keep myself upright as we stumbled down random roads. Xavier was a really funny drunk and I was having the time of my life just drinking and talking with him.
"You're too slow!" Xavier booed me, "Get on my back."
He crouched down for me to jump on and I eagerly pounced on him, almost knocking us both over. He stumbled, but regained his balance and started to trudge up the hill with me clinging onto his back.
"You smell really good." I murmured into his ear, my chin resting on his shoulder.
"No, you." Xavier slurred, "My bon-bon."
I giggled at that, grinning widely into his shoulder. Xavier was incredibly strong; this hill was steep and he was fit enough to not be out of breath while walking up it, even while carrying me on his back. My mind went to a dirty place, knowing he could pick me up like I was a rag doll.
"Baby, I can tell that your thoughts aren't pure!" Xavier cried drunkenly, fruitlessly trying to crane his neck to see me.
"Hurry up then!" I blushed, "Go forth."
Xavier chuckled at that, holding me to him tighter as he jogged up the hill as fast as he could. I screamed out in a mixture of terror and joy, throwing my head back as it turned into giggles. Nobody else was around, so we could be as loud as we wanted.
We reached the top of the hill and I gasped audibly, finally realising where we were. I stayed clinging to Xavier's back, resting my chin on his shoulder again. The view in front of me was incredibly sobering, the beauty taking my breath away.
We were at the highest point in town and beyond the fence in front of us was a sheer drop with nothing but woods for as far as the eye could see. Looking down on the woods for once gave you a whole new perspective and I could see a hundred different shades of green lighting up in the moonlight.
Xavier let me climb down and I took a step towards the railing, leaning over it to see more of the trees. I was hyper aware of Xavier's presence as he pressed up against my back, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on top of my head. We both stood in silence for a while, appreciating the scene in front of us.
"You're lucky that you get to live there." I whispered, not wanting to disturb the serene silence.
"My home is your home." He murmured in my ear, kissing my cheek.
I turned my head slightly to face him and all of my senses were flooded with emotions. Seeing him in the moonlight always took my breath away- his features were just so sharp and his eyes were so bright. I bit my lip, just wanting to kiss him right now.
"Can I kiss you?" He read my mind, staring at me intensely.
My heart was pounding and I couldn't think, let alone speak. All I could do was nod yes.
In an instant his lips came crashing down on mine, lighting my whole body on fire. It felt like I had been hit by electricity, but in a good way. His lips moulded to mine, moving passionately as he pushed me up against the railing. The kiss was hungry- the raw emotions we both felt pouring out as we made out.
As it deepened, Xavier's hands found the backs of my thighs, lifting me off of the ground. My legs were wrapped around his waist, completely pressed up against him as we kissed. I know he did it so that he didn't have to lean down so far while kissing me, but I felt as if I belonged here.
"Cameron, will you do me the pleasure of being my boyfriend?" Xavier panted, pulling away from the kiss.
"A thousand times yes." I nodded frantically, smashing my lips against his again, missing them in the two seconds we'd stopped kissing.
