The Dog Collar

"Quick, acquire the child, I'll watch for the parents! Hastily you fool! Hastily!" The familiar male voice barked in exasperation, rolling his eyes at his incompetent colleague. He made his was towards the innocent baby girl, removing the child from the cot, both apparating out of the room.

Then, the echo of her Father. She remembered his voice vividly. He was such a gentle, kind, loving man, from what her unnaturally powerful memory could remember.

Trembling as she uprose slowly from her bed, shaking her head and spraying her pale pink water bottle in her face to shake the familiar nightly occurrence.

'One day. One day I'll break free. One day I'll find them.''

The same thought ever night for years drives her ambition for freedom.

She remembered she had acquired her Mother's hair colour changing ability. A peaceful sentiment in a way, that and her last name, the last identification that she had a family.

Cassie Lupin, known around the ministry as 'Cas.'

She had different flashbacks all the time, disrupting her peace.

Another was in the point of view of her Mother, walking into a room in their quaint household, spotting her exhausted husband with their tiny baby daughter lying on his chest, one arm protectively but gently around her, guarding her from the world.

Cassie never knew that life except when she was but an infant and doesn't remember it all that well.

Ever since she had grown into a young teenager, her powers had begun to form, halfway to their full potential. Due to the uncertainty of this power, she had an engraved bracelet secured tightly around her wrist, which forbid her to teleport anywhere not within the ministry. The occupants of the ministry called it 'the dog collar.'

Her powers were unique, neither of her parents had and indication of the same abilities.

Being a shapeshifter, her powers transcended beyond the normality of a shapeshifters capacity.

At the early stages of practice with the bracelet, she could shapeshift, fly when in human form, control fire elements, telekinesis, time travel to certain periods, heal others with minor injuries and appeared to be immortal, her inevitable encounter with a near death experience for any other witch or wizard merely left her with a laceration.

Being around the ministry was quaint when it is home, when Cassie knew little among those walls. It was always alive and intriguing, people bustling about completing daily tasks, filing motions, attending court.

Cassie would watch for hours in pure interest alone of witches and wizards going about their ordinary lives. People hurried about faster today, holding the usual newspapers, but a plastered expression of worry appeared to be on a lot of people's faces.

Cassie picked up one of the newspapers and read about the notorious escapee serial killer, Sirius Black, the name that sent chills down the spines of even the higher ministry, the man who ran from Azkaban, the impossible feat. Two ministers hurried past her in close range, gently bumping her, which was of no interest until one spoke, capturing Cassie's attention.

"We're not sending that child out, end of story" One snapped.

"Cassie is perfectly capabl-"

"I don't care Percival, I am not taking that bracelet off her" He snapped once more,  tone increasingly more agitated. Percival sighed and backed down.

Years ago, Cassie had traveled back in time to that of the emerging American ministry of magic, her original intention being to learn. However, she discovered Percival suffering effects of a polyjuice potion replacement, and brought him to the current time for healing, the help of magic reversing any ageing effects this process may have had on him.

'The bracelet makes more sense with regard to that context.'

"I'm sorry Cas, I tried" He sighed, placing a gentle hand on her back. "He's the most stubborn of the lot of them."

"That's alright Perci, thanks for trying, though" She smiled warmly in reply, already expecting the defeat. He returned a similar reassuring smile, patted her shoulder softly and quickly headed off to follow the minister he previously conversed with.

Sighing as she was handed a cup of hot chocolate, which she of course adapted into coffee, she noticed the minister had left his office completely unguarded, not his usual formation.

An idea raced through Cassie's mind like an uncontrolled rocket.

'The key, it might be in there'

Looking around, she slowly made her way unseen into the office, despite his secretary being situated not 10 feet from the door, distracted by her computer. Cassie's eyes locked on the mahogany, enchanted cabinets that endlessly lined the walls and she began searching.

'This could be it. This could be my way out.'
