CHAPTER TEN
"It's really that simple?" Luna inquiries curiously, eyes wide and focused on Lilith and the bundle of burning sage in her hands. "I thought witchcraft would be more…"
"Complicated?" Lilith supplies helpfully, waving the sage about in order to spread the smoke.
The two are walking all corners of the house. Lilith claims that it is to ensure the entire house is cleansed; Luna's just taking her word for it.
"Magical, maybe." She replies.
"It can be, " Lilith answers, "depending on the type of witch you are, the type of familiar you have, and what type of task you are tackling."
Luna turns down yet another hallway they've yet to cover. Just how big is this house? Lilith follows.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, " Lilith elaborates, "if you're a red witch, you get to shoot fireballs from your hand. If you're a blue witch, you can read people's minds. Also, there are several different types of familiars. For instance, your Shownu is " fortis", meaning he's strong. My Kihyun is "subtiliter", or clever. Each familiar type is better at certain things. While Shownu excels in physical strength, strength enough to keep you safe, Kihyun is clever; very useful for reconnaissance and information gathering."
"That's crazy, " Luna murmurs, amazed. "How many different types of familiars are there?"
"There are seven, " Lilith replies with a smile. "As a white witch, I'd say your power is quite magical. With enough experience you could all but bring a poor soul back from the dead."
Luna smiles; she really likes the sound of that. She continues to follow Lilith through the halls of her estate, all the while wondering whether or not the other witch is truly as bad as Shownu seems to think she is. The white witch rather enjoys the scent carried by the thick smoke wafting from Lilith's bundle of sage, and she finds it hard to imagine that the latter means the former any harm.
Though, Lilith's observant eyes quite easily pick up on the way that Luna begins to scratch, clearly itchy of a sudden. She files that information away, noting that sage is not likely to be enough to cleanse this house.
"What about you?" Luna asks, smiling timidly as Lilith pauses.
Her hand remains still for a moment, held aloft as the bundle of herbs burns steadily.
"I'm a grey witch, " she reveals, though with some hesitation. "I have visions. Basically, I'm a seer."
Luna doesn't need to be told why Lilith seemed so hesitant to reveal her own magic, after all, hasn't Shownu said time and again that other watches can't be trusted. Still, she places a gentle hand on Lilith's rather tense shoulder and smiles.
"That sounds really awesome!" Luna enthuses genuinely. "Thank you for telling me."
At Luna's insistence, Lilith and Kihyun have remained for dinner. Excited at the prospect of guests, especially guests from which she stands to learn so much about witchcraft and what she can do, Luna may or may not have gone a little overboard.
In the middle of the extended dining room table sits a whole rack of lamb; though it smells divine Lilith can't help but gawk. She'd known that Shownu's witch must be wealthy, it was clear from the moment she began to approach the land on which the house rests. Space in Raven's Knoll is a premium, not because it is a bustling city, but because it's just too small. The poor live huddled together in shoe closet sized apartments, just over the wrong side of the tracks. Meanwhile the middle class lives in the world's tiniest cookie cutter suburbia. Only the truly wealthy have any real land to call their own.
Given that Raven's Knoll was built around the local forest, and that the locals staunchly refute any efforts to expand due to tradition, the town remains as small as it ever was. With a population of only about a hundred people, Raven's Knoll registers as one of the smallest towns most people have ever seen.
See, this town has a long history with the occult. Initially settled by witches and their kin, Raven's Knoll was originally meant to be a place of refuge for those of magical descent. Over time, however, mortals began to arrive and the town was forever changed. Now, the only people who even remember the history of this place are a handful of witches who were there, and a few of the wealthy and elite.
Lilith had never had a particular need for vast amounts of money; in all honesty, she'd been happy enough being left alone by the world around her. Though she's witnessed the birth if Raven's Knoll, and had plenty of time to amass a fortune, she hadn't. She'd chosen to live on the outskirts of town, like so many of the poor and destitute.
She'd known, of course, that other witches were using their longevity to amass riches. But this hadn't concerned her in the slightest. Now, however, she has to admit that she is a little overwhelmed. Not only is Luna's estate more of a mansion than a "house", she whips up an elegant and expensive looking meal as if it were nothing. Rack of lamb, asparagus, mashed potatoes that taste as if they were made from scratch…
When did Luna have the time to prepare such a meal?
Despite Lilith's many years of life, and the nature of her magic, she is more than a little surprised. It's strange to think that someone who lives in such a place wouldn't have a flurry of servants, a personal chef, and a handful of maids on hand. But no, she prepared this meal entirely on her own.
The entire meal she has been smiling so freely, eyes cheerful and bright as she pokes and prods both Lilith and Kihyun as if enchanted by their very existence. The grey witch would be lying if she tries to claim that she doesn't feel at least slightly out of place. She listens to Luna's myriad of questions with patience, however, and answers as graciously as she possibly can. That familiar of Luna's has been glaring daggers at Lilith all evening, and it's beginning to wear at her.
Still, the grey witch holds her tongue. She knows very well how tonight will turn out; there is no need for her to antagonize the cat familiar and cause unnecessary strife later on.
"So Kihyun is a raven?" Luna asks, curiosity coloring her tone so clearly that Lilith can't help but smile a little.
Kihyun himself looks less pleased, rather, he stares at Shownu with a pleading sort of look; it's almost as if he is terrified of the gruff cat familiar. To be fair, Shownu has been glaring so harshly that even Luna herself feels more than a little uncomfortable.
"Yes, " Lilith replies, "that's right."
"What was it like the first time you saw him in his human form?"
Luna's eyes betray a certain sense of embarrassment, as she can't seem to meet either Lilith's or Shownu's gaze. Her question seems like such an strange one to Lilith, and to Kihyun as well.
"What do you mean?" Kihyun queries, suddenly quite curious himself. "Has Shownu not explained to you that our human forms are our original forms?"
A furious blush invades the pale flesh of Luna's cheeks.
"I think he mentioned that familiars were originally human, or something to that effect…"
"I think it's just an odd question, " Lilith butts in, trying to appease Shownu who is beginning to look as if he might boil over any minute. "Kihyun didn't mean to question your skills as a familiar. Most witches already know all of these things after all…"
"So, " Luna sighs, deflated, "I found out about everything really late then?"
Glancing at Luna's dejected form, droopy shoulders and discouraged eyes, Lilith clears her throat. She wipes her fingers with the napkin that had been so lovingly folded up in the shape of a flower at the start of the meal, and sits a little straighter in her chair.
"Witchcraft runs in the blood, " she explains, eyes kind and warm, voice a soothing destruction from Luna's woeful thoughts. "So most mothers teach their daughters, and their daughters will in turn pass their skills to their daughters, and so on. There are very few old witches left, but our kind are nothing if not hedonistic. It is not uncommon for a witch to have several daughters within their extended lifetimes, all of which are taught the history of our kind, the general application of magic, and an extensive knowledge of familiars by their mother. It's a bit strange that you haven't been taught any of this."
"To be honest, " Luna reveals, ignoring Shownu's pointed glance, "I didn't even know that I was a witch until Shownu popped up in my house. Scared the hell out of me at first."
"Were you… adopted or something?" Lilith queries carefully.
Shownu looks like he wants to say something, and the last thing the grey witch wants is to upset him. Curiosity, however, has overcome her. Luna smiles slightly, wistful-like, almost as if remembering something fond.
"I was adopted, " she confirms. "I was a baby when the adoption went through, so I don't even know who my birth mother was. And in my childishness, I never thought to ask my parents until it was too late."
It hadn't gone well, when her parents had finally told her the truth. She'd never have guessed that they were not her biological parents, and the sudden knowledge of it had left her reeling and petulant. She'd moved away from Raven's Knoll for a time, under the excuse of wanting to find herself. The thought makes Luna want to cry.
Really, it all boiled down to the fact that she couldn't stand to look at them, and now they're gone.
"I could teach you what I know, " Lilith offers.
There is a look of genuine kindness upon her face, and Kihyun sighs. Of course, he knows why they are really here and it all boils down to this. Lilith had shared her vision of tonight's events with him, so he knows that it is imperative that he keep his mouth shut. Nonetheless, he is half tempted to open his mouth and ask Lilith if this is all truly such a good idea.
"I would love that-"
"On one condition, " Shownu finally speaks out. "You form a coven with us."
Everyone stops eating, utensils are placed down and fingers all around begin to fumble for their respective napkins.
"Shownu, " Luna chides, "you really shouldn't-"
"We accept, " Lilith interrupts. "I understand why you arrived at that decision, and I can't say that I blame you. We'll join."
Dumbfounded, Luna's mouth falls slack.
