Chapter 33

Travis has gone back home, like I'd asked him to. He's taken an early leave and coming in his place, to drive me back home is Evan. There is trust in our warriors and pack members assigned in position of protecting the leaders, but both felt reassured if it were either one of them with me, especially at times like these.

He is on his way and in the mean time, Ronan had suggested that we have some lunch by the hotel pool area, since we are already done. I think after last night, he was full on taking advantage of this time, he'd use it to talk to me alone and just to spend quality time with his sister.

Last night, he'd respected my wishes of not talking too much about what happened, but he made light conversation or we would sit in silence for some time. He'd surprised me when he actually watched over me for the whole night. I found him heavily asleep on a chair near my bed.

It reminded me of a time when we were young and he'd watched over me, when I broke my arm the first time. We were so young and it is quite rare that I'd remember such a memory, but I did and it positioned me into the one who now, watched over him.

Our papa not knowing about the rest of what had happened, over the years, is still something that has been weighing heavily on Ronan's shoulders. The fear of papa not looking at him the same and more over, not being forgiven by papa, hasn't helped.

The time for papa to learn of everything always seems to be interrupted, by one thing or the other and as time passes, Ronan's fear grows. I desire for a clue on how to comfort him but comfort, sounds like a foreign thing for me, with where I am.

I feel drained at most times and it feels like what I say, is the opposite of what I'm feeling. It is a state that needs a thorough search for that spark of clearance, in such blurry surroundings.

Expressing myself even feels like the hardest to do, it's like I'm waiting for something to set me off, so I can scrape off all the hard surfaces in order to find those soft parts, that remind me of me.

Barriers have been set between Niana and I, it is the most I feel incontrol between us. She has invaded once or twice without my permission and still, I have not said a word to her. Years have passed now and I have grown, the times have changed and my silence is proof of that.

I have tasted the good and it was taken from me, nothing is as simple as before and she is learning on this, as the days go on by. She has made this aware to my nana but the thing about my nana is that, at such a time, she will never force anything on me.

It is no foreign thing to lose a mate and a child, but at the same time, and to be a witness to such tragedy, this, she herself, can't utter the words of understanding my way.

She had said that she would be expecting me for dinner tonight, meaning that she didn't want me traveling late. I had expected her call, with her asking if I was on my way but surprisingly, it is an unknown number.

In hesitation, I look at the screen. After 5 counts, I cave in and answer.

No voice yet distant breathing I hear.

An alertness like no other touches my senses yet in the midst of it all, a knock sounds on the door.

As if the person can also hear the knock, they hang up and I am left with staring at the screen.  The knock sounds urgent and calls for my attention, so I attend to it.

Alpha Dane stands infront of me and at the mention of Ronan, that troubling feeling I felt when I'd uttered those words to him in the morning, hit me again. He mentioned trouble downstairs and I was on my way. All sorts of things in the name of trouble came to mind, mostly which centred around a fight between Ronan and an alpha.

What I walk into outside however, is far different. Ronan is being handcuffed by men dressed in all black, with blue and gold badges, which is a sign that they are under instruction of the council.

Seeing Ronan try to resist against them and being quite vocal, quickens my feet towards them. The sight of my brother being the centre of topic amongst all these alphas doesn't settle well with me, it pushes me to calm the situation.

" Catherine!" Ronan calls for me when he picks up my scent.

With him wanting to get to me, I see that he is dragging the men who are trying to detain him.

" Ronan -"

" I didn't do what I'm being accused of, you've got to believe me sister."

" Ronan calm down." I try say, wanting him to focus on me.

" Let go of me!" He warns through a growl, his eyes shifting from brown to black.

If he doesn't calm down anytime soon, he might shift and this could be a major problem.

" Ronan listen to me -"

" Luna step back!" One of the men pushes me back rather harshly and I stumble back.

My head whips to where the sound of a body, hits the ground, all because Ronan had been responsible. It is the man who'd shoved me back, with what Ronan displays on his face, he makes it clear that if he were to get his hands on the man, he'd seriously hurt him.

" Don't you dare touch her!" The alpha in Ronan demands and I know that he is within breaking point.

" Let me talk to him." Alpha Dane suggests in my ear, since he'd caught me in time before I tripped on my feet and possibly land on the ground.

" It's okay alpha, let me do it. He'll listen to me." I assure him, moving away from him quickly when I notice one of those men, reach for something behind him.

Something like silver catches my eye and my blood runs cold, knowing that he might use whatever it is behind him to harm Ronan.

" I will kill you if you touch my sister ever again, do you hear me you miserable -"

" Ronan!" I call him in clear and sharp tone, earning his attention.

I meet his eyes and I use that to my advantage.

" Talk to me brother, not them." I offer, taking steps towards him.

" Luna, this is the last warning, step back from the suspect!" The same man who I saw reach for that silver substance says.

" Hey, you'd better lose that tone with the Luna, you are not in any position to exercise that kind of authority with her." Another voice intervenes and when I glance to the person, I see that it is that old alpha, who I learnt is alpha Sanchez.

He had spoken up before on the first day, addressing the manner of Alpha Gage in the presence of many leaders. He had been quite vocal on how unimpressive alpha Gage conducted himself.

Now he is intervening again, stepping forward amongst the alphas who are still here and have not gone home already.

" Alpha, we are trying to do our job."

" And she is trying to work with you here, so why aren't you meeting her halfway?"

" You've laid a hand against her, that's already an offence on its own. Remember that!" The sound of Elder Grayson's voice makes the mens heads to lower in submission.

At a different time, I would be displeased by his intrusion but right now, at the thought of Ronan, I am relieved.

" Step away from the alpha!" He orders.

" But Elder -" the man tries to protest but Elder Grayson cuts him off, repeating his words.

Not wanting to show defiance, they take a step away from Ronan and he doesn't waste time in rushing towards me.

" Catherine -"

" Come back to me Ronan!" I say, reaching out to touch his face.

A few seconds pass before his wolf withdraws and Ronan returns.

" Are you okay, that bastard didn't hurt you did he?" He questions, looking me all over.

" I am okay."

He nods before an angry look takes over his face, though his eyes show a bit of panic as he looks at me.

Whatever he is being accused of is big and might affect me too.

" I didn't do it, I would never do this to you sister, trust me on this, you have to. Please." He mouths the last word.

" What is he being accused of?!" I question out loud, not tearing my eyes away from Ronan.

" What else hasn't your brother been accused of, oh yes, this is a new one....Your brother killed your mate and pup!...Now isn't that news?!" Alpha Gage says, sounding so proud and wanting to taunt us at the same time.

A powerful growl comes from Ronan, bearing his teeth out in warning to alpha Gage.

" Ronan, Ronan!" I call him and he looks at me. " Look at me."

He starts shaking his head. " I didn't do it Catherine." He says, trying to convince me. " I would never again -"

" Shhh, I know." I say, not wanting him to say anymore. " Remember what I told you earlier."

' In anything unclear brother, just, just think of me.'

He nods, understanding my words.

" Sorry Luna but the alpha needs to come with us." I am told.

" You go first and I'll follow. Wait for me brother." I tell him as I take a step back from him.

Everything in him wants to protest and to clear his name, but my words to him are preventing him from doing it. The whole time he is being dragged to one of those big black cars, he keeps his eyes on me.

When the door closes after him, I pat on my chest three times, like I did before when we were in the forest and we were trying to calm Papa's wolf. Now I do this, to remind him that I am here.

                           ********

' A name of the person who laid a charge has come to light.'

' In anything unclear brother, just, just think of me.'

' I didn't do it, I would never do this to you sister, trust me on this, you have to. Please. '

All these words replay in mind as we enter the pack land. I haven't said anything other then take me back to the pack, to Evan and I can feel his concern, along with Cara's.

I am a mixture of emotions and the most, that has been poking at me, is concern for Ronan. He has been detained right at the hands of the council and cases, that involve them, can always prove a challenge, whether the accused is only a suspect.

None of this should have happened the way they did, everything was too much on the front line and now, talk will only surround Ronan being arrested and accused for the murder of my mate and baby.

This is surely a mess and a mess caused by one person.

" Luna?" I ignore Evan's call and get out of the car.

I am truly upset by what has been done behind my back.

Travis comes out of the house, just as I am walking towards it.

" Catherine -" I ignore him and continue my way.

He is quick to block my path. " Step away Travis." I warn him.

" You know I can't let you do that."

" Step away Travis, I want to talk to your mate."

" Don't force my hand Catherine, I can't let you in there knowing...."

" What, be specific Travis."

He is battling with himself.

" Catherine -"

" Your mate knew exactly what she was doing and she should have expected my visit."

" Yes I have been expecting you." Kylie's voice comes through and my head snaps to her.

" Kylie....." Travis says in warning.

" I can handle this Travis." She says, with her chin tilted up.

She is in defence mode, ready to defend her actions.

" Catherine..."

" Step aside Beta." I order, my Luna voice coming out.

A growl of protest rumbles from his chest but he caves in, knowing that the Luna has spoken.

I walk past him, hearing a defeated sigh from him.

Entering into the house, after her, I hear someone follow behind and I shut the door closed, making it clear that it will only be Kylie and I in the house.

She leads me to the living room and takes a seat, gesturing for me to do the same. I sit opposite her and we face each other.

A moment of silence passes before she speaks up. " You're upset, I get it." She shrugs.

" And you're too emotional, you've made it clear." That mask she wore starts dropping.

" Don't you dare judge me, I lost my brother!" She jumps to her feet.

" And I lost my family." I say, rising to my own feet.

She looks away from me.

" Just so you know, I don't regret what I did." She says strongly. " I acted on what you failed to do."

" No, there isn't any sense of failure in what hasn't begun. You alone, acted on emotion. Like I said, you're too emotional, it's obvious."

She jerks around angrily. " No, I did what I had to do. Everything is as clear as day, my brother hated your brother and so did yours. They died near his pack and he had the baby's blanket with blood. He is the one -"

" It's too obvious, the intentions behind are clear that Ronan should be the scapegoat. And you, terribly fell for it. All this was perfectly executed, the mastermind had time, he or she was patient and now, after what you've done, it's mission 1 accomplished.

You've just given someone a reason to further celebrate, instead of them being at the edge of their seat, not knowing what our next move will be."

" No, you're just trying to make an excuse for that monster and murderer you call a brother!" She shakes her head, refusing to hear my reasoning.

" And you're too blinded by pain, to look within the presented surface."

" And of course Catherine is immune to pain isn't she?...." She says, stepping closer to me. " You're here defending the same man who abused you."

" And your brother was at the brink of clawing my heart out."

She blinks at me, being taken aback by my response.

" Your own words Catherine." She says, looking at me with different eyes, suspicious eyes.

" No, my own experience." I respond.

" So what, you decided to do a little pay back."

" Don't say something you might never be able to take back." I warn her.

" Like I said before, I have no regret for what I did. Your brother deserves to rot in those cells for what he did."

" He didn't do it and I stand by this."

" Because you don't want to believe it."

" No, it's as clear as day in my senses. I know he didn't do it and I stand by this." I say.

" Oh please, what senses?.....You keep on talking of senses yet you couldn't even use that to save Mica and Ula -" My hand shoots out and smacks her across the face.

Tears prick at the corners of my eyes but I am quick to push them back.

" How dare you?!' My own head whips to the side when she slaps me in response.

" Kylie, open the door!" We hear Travis knock on the door.

" Now look who's the emotional one. Couldn't even take the truth." She says strongly.

" The truth is that you're trying to ease the guilt you feel for what happened, just like what happened with your family."

" You don't know anything, so shut up!" She says near tears. " You have no right -" She tries to slap me again but I am quick to catch her wrist mid air, stopping her.

" Too late for that Kylie, you started this and it'll be you facing what comes next."

" I am ready for anything." She declares, pulling back her arm.

" No you aren't. I told you that you are too emotional, your vision is blurry to see the clear picture and at the end of the day, it'll be you shedding tears on the kind of damage you've caused. I won't take any of this lightly, be aware of that!" I say before heading for the door.

Travis has started banging on the door, demanding to be let in before he forces his way in.

" And she now shows her true colours. You're just like your brother. You have no care for them like you do your brother, I wouldn't be surprised if you had a hand in this."

" Watch your mouth!" I spin around, glaring at her.

" No you watch it Catherine!....You're nothing but a traitor, you're willing to stand for my brother's killer rather then your mate. How could you be so cruel huh ?!"

" Your actions are cruel. You've proven this with acting behind our backs. You didn't do anything in the name of Justice for my family -"

" They were my family too!!" She screams, pushing me hard that I stumble on my feet.

As I get ahold of my balance, I feel a hard slap across the face, this surely sending me to the floor. There is banging and shouting at the door while Kylie screams words at me. Anger floods like lava as she spews words that take me back to that day, I watched my family being taken from me.

" You have no right to -" I push her hard, not giving her a chance to get on top of me and to have an advantage.

I quickly rise to my feet and punch her across the face, clutching onto her hair and pulling her back to her feet, before pushing her against the wall.

" Stop it Kylie!! We both lost family, stop and protect the one you have left!!" I say, wanting to remind her of her unborn baby.

" Just sto -" The words hang in the air when the door breaks down and as I turn my head to look behind me, a powerful growl echoes throughout the house, being an announcement of a mate, coming in defence of his mate.

" Travis no!"

Kylie says it rather too late, when my body is thrown across the room and the last I hear is glass shattering, before I am quickly succumbed to nothingness.
