1 - First Meeting
This shouldn't be happening, she thinks. She's only thirteen after all and normal thirteen years olds should be concerned about homework, crushes and their favorite music. Not magical training, fighting monsters and coming to some stupid Justice League meeting with their aunt
But Aurelia Hall is not normal. She never has been and never will be. That's just the curse when the family ability skips her mother and father and lands in her blood. Not that she doesn't mind it, magic is cool (especially the kind she uses) but the constant training by her aunt Clara along with school work is on the verge of making her crazy. Besides, she's no hero or even a sidekick like Robin or Wondergirl (although she has gone on patrol with her aunt once or twice) so why is there a need for her to be a part to go with Clara to Gotham for some stupid meeting, she doesn't understand.
But the league meeting is happening at Wayne Manor, which can only mean one thing. Bruce Wayne is Batman. Holy shit. That fact is enough to blow Aurelia's mind, more than the fact that she is going to see the other heroes (it's only Wonder Woman though). After, Batman has always been one of her favorite heroes.
The journey to the Wayne Manor is easy for the two magicians. Both have the capability to teleport using the ability that lies in their blood. The spell is not some difficult incantation like a lot of spells are. It's two simple words, which should be followed by a mental visualization of the place you want to go to. Open Door. But since Aurelia has never been to Gotham (or for that matter Wayne Manor), she has to rely on her aunt's description.
Aurelia and Clara stand in the middle of their living room. Clara's white hair is tied in a high ponytail and her bright purple eyes seem to be glowing. She looks at Aurelia, which unnerves her because her aunt's stare always feels like she's looking right into her soul.
"Ready to go?" Clara asks, her voice calm.
"Yes," Aurelia nods, keeping her voice neutral. Being excited will only cause her aunt to be annoyed, which is not a good look on her.
She closes her eyes, and then under her breath speaks the incantation. Open Door. When she opens her eyes, her aunt has already disappeared from sight meaning that she has already reached Wayne Manor. Aurelia winced slightly, knowing her speed in performing spells needs a lot (and she means a lot) of practice.
Then the spell takes effect. Her fingers are lit up with a strange bright light which pulses and flickers, changing colors from amber, ruby and then to gold. She looks at her hands and finds them growing increasingly transparent as her surroundings become blurred. When she looks back up, she is standing in an open area in front of a massive, Gothic looking house. Clara has already walked to the entrance of the manor and is waiting for her to come up.
Even as Aurelia walks up to the building, she feels a strange sense of foreboding. She pushes it back down and follows her aunt as she opens the door without knocking. Aurelia is about to point out her mistake, but catches herself in time as an old man dressed in a sleek black suit greets them.
"Hello, Miss Jarrett," The man greets with a tone of familiarity. "Master Wayne has been waiting for you." He looks at Aurelia and offers a kindly smile. "And this must be young Aurelia."
Aurelia doesn't know what to say, so she offers a smile and a small wave to the unknown man. She's always been like that, especially when she meets new people. Clara offers the man a short but rather stiff smile. "Good to know, Alfred." The man motions for them to enter and they step inside. Inside, the mansion is just as opulent. There's paintings, strange decorations and a massive chandelier hanging right above their heads. It is, without a doubt, the home of a billionaire. Aurelia's eyes flit across, trying to memorize each and everything present in the mansion from the massive stairwell to the mantelpiece decoration of two swordsmen fighting with each other.
Aurelia's analytical gaze lands on a man and a woman walking down the stairs and her vision tunnels. Because holy shit, that man is Bruce Wayne and the woman looks just like Wonder Woman, meaning she is Wonder Woman. Her hands suddenly feel clammy and her fingers start to shiver as nervousness sets in. They are heroes, part of the Justice League just like her aunt. But her aunt will never make her as nervous; seeing these two heroes will.
"Bruce, Diana," Clara says. Her tone is deeper and her posture is relaxed, a sign that she holds immense respect for these two. "I hope I'm not too late."
"You're right on time as always," Wonder Woman says with a smile. Alfred has stepped aside, letting the heroes talk to each other and for a moment she wishes to follow him too. Aurelia feels extremely out of place and wonders why her aunt even decided to bring her here. There is polite conversation between the three heroes, during which she learns that Wonder Woman's real name is Diana and her sidekick Wonder Girl is also here. At that, Aurelia thinks of Robin, Batman's sidekick and wonders if he also lives in this place.
"Aurelia," Clara suddenly places a hand on her shoulder, pulling her attention. "Be polite and say hello."
Aurelia blinks and suddenly, feels like running out the door. But she manages to keep her feet in check and introduces herself with a slight stammer. "H-hi. I'm Aurelia."
"Hello Aurelia," Diana says to her with a kind smile and holds out her hand for the girl. And for a moment, Aurelia wonders if she is dreaming because Wonder Woman knows her name and wants to shake hands. She restrains herself from pinching her palm and instead shakes Diana's hand, which is incredibly soft yet feels strong to hold. She is so not washing that hand ever. Bruce Wayne only offers her a stiff smile, and a slight nod of his head. Aurelia is content with that because shit, Batman and Wonder Woman know who she is.
In a daze, she stands completely still and doesn't even realise that the three heroes have walked away for their League meeting, leaving her alone with Alfred in front of the stairwell. He starts walking up the steps and beckons her to follow him. "If you'll follow me, Miss Hall.."
Aurelia nods her head and follows him up the stairs. There are at least two more floors in the mansion, which makes her wonder. Just how rich is Bruce Wayne? But she doesn't need the answer because she knows he's pretty damn rich. She passes multiple doors as she walks down the long corridor on the first floor. She knows each of these rooms are special in some way or the other. Even if they aren't, Aurelia knows they're going to be massive and two of these rooms put together can make up her entire apartment with space to spare.
Alfred pauses in front of a door that is half open. Light streams through the space and Aurelia can hear two people talking. The voices sound young, probably not much older than her. Alfred peers through the door and says something she cannot quite hear. Then he turns around and motions for her to step forward. He pushes the door open for her and she steps into a big bedroom, similar to the image she has created in her mind.
As Alfred leaves, Aurelia realises that there's two people in the room, a boy and a girl. The girl, who is sitting on the bed, looks older, by at least two or three years and has brownish-black hair. The boy looks the same age as her and has sleek, black hair. He seems to be looking at her rather analytically. Are they…
"So you're her?" He says, rather rudely. "Lumière's niece? You look nothing special."
"Excuse me?" Aurelia mutters under her breath. Bruce Wayne may have manners but he sure as hell hasn't taught them to this boy.
"Play nice," The older girl says as she climbs off the bed and pulls Aurelia into a massive hug. Okay, Wonder Girl is a hugger. Nice. That's nice. "You're Aurelia, right? Diana told me about you, said you have magic too."
Wonder Woman talked about her? What dimension was she living in?
"Yeah," Aurelia nods, managing a slight smile on her face.
"Awesome! My name's Donna and this here is, Dick Grayson. " At Aurelia's surprised snort, Donna starts to giggle. "His real name is Richard, but he goes by Dick."
"What? Why would you do that?" Aurelia says, trailing off into a light chuckle.
"That's not funny," Dick shakes his head vehemently, like he has seen this reaction multiple times.
"Hey man, I'm not judging you for your life choices," Aurelia tilts her head with the slightest smile as Donna stands next to her. "But I am so judging you for that name."
"Oh I love you already," Donna says with a massive grin as she drapes her hand over Aurelia's shoulders. "You and I are going to be the best of friends."
"So…"
Aunt Clara looks at Aurelia expectantly as they sit at the dinner table at night. They've ordered Chinese today from their favourite restaurant and are (or were) eating it in silence. Clara is still staring at her and she doesn't know what to say. She puts down her chopsticks and looks at the older woman.
"So what?" Aurelia asks. "What do you want to ask?"
"Did you like going there? Did you meet Donna and Dick? Were they nice?"
"Too many questions at once, but the answer is yes to all three."
"Good, because there's a chance you might be spending time with them from now on."
"What?" Aurelia looks up at her aunt in surprise. Just what does she mean? She stares at Clara in confusion. "What are you talking about?"
There's the slightest smirk on Clara's face as she runs a hand through her sleek white hair. She looks at Aurelia like she is analysing her, trying to see what kind of clothes are the best fit for...then it hits her, what her aunt is planning. "You can't be serious," Aurelia expresses disbelief. "You can't actually be serious. I thought you said I needed a lot more training and...I was not prepared. Then why — ?"
Clara reaches beneath the table, like she's kept something there. But knowing her aunt, she's pulling something from her pocket dimension. She keeps the package next to her dinner table and Aurelia takes a moment to analyse it. At first glance, it is difficult to recognize what is wrapped in the cloth. But Clara slowly unfurls it and in the middle lies…"A mask. A freaking mask?! What does this mean?"
"It's time for you to step out of the house and into the real world," Clara's lips are turned upwards as she crosses her arms and leans forward. "I'm asking you to be my sidekick, like Robin is to Batman. And maybe somewhere down the line, you can take my position as a hero."
Aurelia just stares at the mask, slightly open mouthed. This just feels like someone gave her a massive electric shock and then dumped her into ice-cold water only to shock her again. It feels so sudden, yet she knows her answer already. Clara pushes the mask towards her with two fingers. "You have to make this choice on your own. I am not going to force you to do anything."
Aurelia reaches out for the mask and touches it. The material is strange and feels both hard and soft at the same time. Then again, most magical materials are like that. She puts it back down and looks at her aunt. She is confused, of course, but there is a part of her that knows what the answer is going to be. And it's not like she was training her whole life for it. (note the sarcasm here)
"So what do you say?" Clara questions, her eyes intense and almost glowing. "Do you want to do this? You've trained for a long time. I think it's time we tested your powers against others."
"Others? Criminals, you mean?"
"Criminals, yes. But there are also others you don't know about. People that hide in the night, people similar to us, only they use their power for evil. There's dangers you must know of, which is why I am asking you to help me. I need it."
"You need my help?" Aurelia asks in disbelief. "Lumière needs my help? Wow."
"Yeah yeah," Clara says with an annoyed expression. "I hate to admit it but yes, I do. Which is why I asked you to join me. So what do you say?"
Aurelia feels two things in the moment. A small urge to say 'no' and a bigger urge to say 'yes'. She knows she'll be in danger, in the public eye. But at least she'll be helping people. And what is the point of Aurelia having this fantastical power in her blood if she cannot find the courage to do what is right for others? So in the end, there's only one choice to make, the one choice that is right.
"Yes."
