Strangers
I sat next to the hospital bed. Jesse lay there, her ebony black hair sprawled on the pillow. It was my fault. My fault the girl I loved was laying there, on the hospital bed. I sigh as I remember what happened.
~Flashback~
"Let's try down there!" Jesse called, pointing down to a separate cave. It was dark, and we were running low on torches. "You sure? We're almost out of torches." I pointed out. "It'll be fine. We can break and replace torches." Jesse replied. "Fine." I said. We walked into the cave, making sure it was pitch black before placing a torch. After a few minutes, I thought I heard mobs. "Did you hear that?" I asked. Jesse and I stood still, silent, listening for the sounds. Behind us came zombies, and they barricaded our way. "It must be a dungeon! We have to run!" I exclaimed. Jesse and I started running away from the zombies, further into the cave. We were too busy running to worry about placing torches. Up ahead, I just barely saw the ground break away into a cliff. "Wait!" I exclaimed, blocking Jesse's way as I stopped. She and I looked over the edge an saw it went pretty far down, with small ledges that were too small to stand on, but would most likely cause more pain. We placed the remainder of our torches around us and got ready for our last stand.
The zombies started coming and Jesse and I handled them. More and more came, and eventually Jesse and I had to separate to handle them all. After a bit, I started to panic because I couldn't see Jesse. I heard her calling for help, and I pushed through and slashed the zombies in my way as I started to make my way to Jesse. I pushed through the final zombies blocking me from Jesse, just in time to see her at the edge of the cliff. She didn't realize it, as she took another step back. Time slowed as she started to fall over the cliff. Her emerald green eyes were filled with fear as she looked at me. Time sped back up again and she fell over the edge. "JESSE!" I shouted, running to the edge of the cliff. I looked over and saw her disappear in the darkness. I could see a path leading down, and I could take it to get Jesse. But before that, I had to deal with these zombies. I took out the TNT Axel had lent me and threw it in the crowd of zombies, igniting it. The TNT blew up, killing all the zombies. I put my stuff away and started running down the path, down to try and find Jesse.
I reached the bottom and got out a torch I had grabbed before heading down. Light illuminated against the jagged rocks, and I felt fear fill me as I imagined Jesse hitting those rocks. I saw her limp form laying down, and I ran over to her. I picked her up in my arms and saw blood falling from a wound on her head. I grabbed a piece of cloth and tied it around Jesse's head, trying to stop the flow of blood. Her armor had dents and some scrapes, and I was thankful that she was wearing it otherwise she would be even more hurt. I picked her up carefully and ran up the path. I ran out of the cave, to the town. Petra, Axel and Olivia were outside, fixing some holes in the wall. They immediately turned to me and ran over. "What happened?!" Olivia asked. "Zombies... trapped... cliff..." was all I managed to get out after my mad dash back to the town. "Hurry, we gotta get her to the hospital!" Petra exclaimed.
~End of Flashback~
I felt horrible. The others say it wasn't my fault, it was just bad luck, but it wasn't. I was the one who said we could go into the cave. The one who got us trapped between a cliff and zombies. The one who was separated from Jesse when we should have stayed together, which caused her to fall over the edge. Jesse was constantly getting hurt because of me. It's best if I'm gone from her life, to protect her. I gently kissed her head, on the opposite side of the wound, and whispered, "I'm sorry, Jess..." I got up from my chair and walked out of her room, closing the door behind me, and ran back to the fortress. I ran into my room and grabbed my stuff I would need before leaving a note on my bedstand. Taking my stuff, I walked out of the fortress and out of the town. Turning around, I took one last look at the town before disappearing into the forest.
~Six months later~
I sighed. It has been six months since the accident. Ever since then, I feel like part of me is missing. I stay locked in my room during the day, and I get food and water during the night. My friends keep trying to talk to me, but I don't want to. They say that I'm acting like this because I have amnesia, so I don't remember something from my life. Something that I felt was extremely important to me. It explains why I feel like something or someone is missing, and I feel like part of me is gone. Right now it's around eleven thirty at night, and I want to take a walk. I get up and grab my sword, just in case. I walk out of my room, out of the fortress, out of the town, into the forest. My whole world feels upside-down since the accident. I don't remember much, only zombies, a cave, a cliff, jagged stones, and endless blackness. I can only assume that I was in a cave, when I was trapped by zombies and a cliff. I fell down, seeing only blackness, as I hit jagged stones. One of those stones hit my head, and I blacked out. That was the source of my amnesia. The doctors have been trying to give me medicine to help with the amnesia, but nothing works. I can't remember what's missing, not a thing.
I reach a cliff over a valley, and I sit down, a safe distance from the edge of the cliff, and sigh. I start singing a song that really relates to what I'm going through right now.
~Meanwhile~
I stare out of the window of my house. It's been six months since I left the town, and I haven't seen anyone since then. I came to this valley, and built a house here. It's under the cover of some trees, in the corner, under a cliff, so it's pretty hidden. I miss Jesse so much. Every day I wake up, remember what happened, and blame myself for everything that's happened since the accident. I feel torn in half, like I was supposed to stay in the town, but at the same time I feel like it's best if I stay away from the town and Jesse. I start to sing a song, that perfectly matches how I feel right now.
(Cue music, it's a duet, and Lukas starts before Jesse)
~Jesse's POV~
I walk down the cliff, into the valley below, as I sing. It just feels like the thing or person I'm missing is so close, I can feel it. I just barely hear someone sing the same song as me, except they were singing the part the boy would sing. I follow the voice and come to the underside of a cliff, in a grove of trees, was a quaint house. It was a bungalow, a house with a ground floor and another floor above it, but the roof slopes down as part of the walls. In the window at the top, I saw a young man. He looked to be a year older than me, with blonde hair and blue eyes. He lay his head on the table in the window, hiding behind his arms. He seemed so familiar, yet I didn't know where. I walked to the house and saw the front door was slightly ajar. I didn't feel very good just walking into someone's house, but I had to know who this person was, and why I felt such a connection to them. I slowly and silently walked up the stairs, and came into a bedroom. It had a bed, dresser, bookshelf, and a table with a chair. The man was still sitting in the chair at the table, and he felt more and more familiar as I got closer. I walked forward, silently, until I was only a few feet from him. I took another step forward, and the floorboard creaked. The man looked at me, and I felt instantly mesmerized by those blue eyes.
He had golden hair that shined like the sun, and his blue eyes were shining like the sea. "J-Jess?!" he exclaimed. He knew my name, which meant we had met before. "J-Jess, I can't believe it! It really is you!" he exclaimed, standing up and hugging me. His hug normally would have made me feel uncomfortable, but I felt safe and content wrapped in his arms. I desperately tried to think of his name, but nothing was coming to me. He pulled out of the hug and held my shoulders with his hands, as he stared at me with those blue eyes of his. "Jess?" he asked. "I-I'm sorry, but I don't remember you..." I replied quietly. His blue eyes immediately filled with distraught and tears started forming. "It must have been that fall...." he whispered. "You mean the cliff? In the cave? With the zombies?" I asked. "You remember that?" he asked. "Yeah. Although, it is hard to make out all the details from that memory. Anything before or after, I clearly remember. Although, my memories seem to be missing someone or something. It's from the amnesia." I replied. "Jess, it was my fault. If I hadn't agreed to go into that cave, this wouldn't have happened to you..." he whispered. I looked at him in surprise.
"We were exploring caves for materials. We were almost out of torches, and you wanted to go into another cave. I agreed, and we went in. Zombies came and started chasing us, until we were trapped between them and a cliff. We fought, although we were separated. You fell over the cliff, because I couldn't reach you in time..." he whispered. He started crying, the tears falling down his cheeks. I gently touched his cheek with my hand, and whispered, "It wasn't your fault at all. I was the one who even suggested going into the cave. The zombies were a result of a dungeon. The cliff wasn't made by you. The zombies separated us. The zombies pushed me over the cliff. None of it was your fault." I whispered. I felt a memory similar to this, and I remembered. It was when we were in Soren's fortress. I was comforting the blonde. His name washed over me as I remembered the conversation we had. "It wasn't your fault at all, Lukas..." I whispered, tears starting to form. Lukas looked at me, his blue eyes glowing with happiness. "You remembered!" Lukas exclaimed. I smiled, and all the holes in my memories were filled. But the one that stuck out most was my true feelings for Lukas. I stood on tip-toes, since Lukas was a good few inches taller than me, and pulled Lukas's collar of his jacket down, bringing his face down. I shut my eyes tight as I pressed my lips to his, overjoyed at finally remembering.
It was a moment before Lukas wrapped one arm around my waist, and used his other hand to hold my head, melting into the kiss. We stayed there for a few moments, saving this memory. we pulled away, and I opened my eyes to see Lukas smiling brightly. I smiled back and he scooped me in his arms. I laughed as he twirled me around, kissing me again. We were together again, and nothing was going to change that.
