Inspired by Church Bells

AN If you know this song it deals with abuse and killing your partners. Keep that in mind as you read. Also, Adrien is the villain in this story, sorry

Mari grew up in a small town just outside of Paris with her parents. They ran a small bakery that kept a roof over their head but they were broke. Mari could have cared less, she could run and play how ever she wanted. As she grew up she stopped running and playing but still had fun, There was a boy who lived on a boat and with blue hair would come to visit every three months to their little town. She would spend her weekend with him, she would listen to his stories and hear his music, and fall in love.

She would spend her days helping her parents, and she would work on designs. She dreamed of designing her clothes and selling her clothes to others. One night when Luka her blue-haired boat boy was in town, he agreed to take her into Paris for a night of dancing. She wore a dress she'd made from fabric she bought at the local dime store.

She was having the time of her life dancing and was ready to ask Luka to take her with him on his boat. When a boy with perfect blond hair and a well-tailored suit. "I've been watching you dance all night." He gave her a sweet smile, that made her feel warm inside. "Would you mind if I steal your date for a dance." He asked Luka.

"I don't mind if she is okay with it." Luka let go of her arm.

"Only once dance sir." She smiled and took his arm.

"You are the most beautiful girl I have ever seen." He told her as he pulled her in by the waist.

"I bet you say that to all the ladies." She felt a blush creep up her face.

"Maybe, but I'm a model and my father runs the biggest fashion brand in Paris, and I can tell you didn't buy that dress. You had to have made it." He twirled her and clearly looked her up and down.

"Oh wow, I've always wanted to sell my designs." She looked up at him with hope in her eyes.

"I'll give you my card, call me for dinner and I'll see what I can do." He kissed her on the cheek and his business card. And sent her back to Luka.

"Luka he just offered me a chance to live my dreams." She twirled into his arms.

"You should take it, Mare. And if it doesn't work out, I'll come back and take you away." He winked.

"You really think I could do it?" She wasn't sure.

"You could do anything you wanted, Mare." He kissed her forehead.

Soon Luka's visit was over and he was gone, and she went out for dinner with the blond-haired boy. His name was Adrien, and he was the perfect gentlemen. He couldn't get his father to hire her, but he offered her something that she could only dream off. "So my father has no need for new workers, but if you marry me when I get the company handed to me I will make you the head designer. Until then you can live a life of luxury." She thought of her blue-haired boat boy, she loved him, she knew she did, but Adrien was giving her an escape from a broke life, he could even help her parents, you didn't have to marry for love right? She accepted his offer.

With roses in her hands, wearing more diamonds than she thought possible. She spent the morning sipping on champagne trying to wash away her guilt. She went from a small-town girl to all uptown. She was wearing that white gown and got ready to take his last name. As she walked out with church with Adrien, she could hear the church bells ringing, and in the distance, she could hear from up in the loft, that whole choir's singing. As Adrien open her limo door and helped in she took a moment and folded her hands and closed her eyes and thought of Luka, she hoped he was doing alright.

Soon Mari had no time for designing or even sewing, Adrien had her helping host influential parties and going to fancy dinners at the country club. She was his arm candy, his gorgeous wife. The women who looked at him like he hung the moon. Everyone thought they were Ken and Barbie but little did they know, Ken was always getting way too drunk.

When Mri was with him, she could keep him from getting too drunk. And if she made a point to be in bed before he came home when he went out drinking with his friends there was no trouble, that all changed one Saturday night. He was going drinking and she was going to see her parents and Luka was in town. Adrien never seemed to mind her seeing Luka as long as she was with her parents or with him. He often thanked Luka for helping him meet the love of his life.

But this Saturday night was different, she wasn't home when he got home. She'd come home 30 minutes later than she said she would, and when she walked in the door she found her husband ready to fight. He yelled at her, claiming she was trying to leave him, that she would get on that boy's dammed bought and never come back and he would be alone. He hit her, she stood there frozen, when she didn't react he hit her again, he hit her a few more times before he fell on the floor in front of her and clung to her knees, crying about how he'd be lost without her. She helped him to bed, left a bottle of pills and a glass of water at his bedside table.

She walked herself to the bathroom, cleaned the cut on her lip, gently rubbed ointment into the bruise on her right cheek, and carefully applied the same ointment under her left eye. She then curled up on the couch and slept their afraid of going to bed.

Adrien found her in the morning. He spoke softly to her held her close, spoke about how sorry he was, and how it wouldn't happen again. He took her away on a romantic vacation as an apology. But all his money could never save Mari, from the devil living in his eyes.

Soon the weekend beatings become a weekly thing, he'd go out on Friday and by Sunday she'd be sitting in the back row of church with him. She got good at dealing with all the bruises, covering them in makeup, using Dark sunglasses. She'd sit there and pray Luka would come back and save her from the brises.

Just like their wedding day, as she walked out with the church with Adrien, she could hear the church bells ringing, and in the distance, she could hear from up in the loft, that whole choir's singing. As Adrien open her limo door and helped in she took a moment and folded her hands and closed her eyes and thought of Luka, she hoped he was doing alright. The church bells made her believe she could be alright.

Finally, Luka came back and Adrien was away for the weekend, she'd fake feeling ill to get out of the trip, Adrien hoping she was with child, let her stay home. She slipped away, her make-up done perfectly, hiding everything. Her sunglasses were firmly in place even though it was dusk. She wore a long sleeve shirt and long skirt. She made it to the dock, and step onto his boat. He took one look at her and took her below deck so no one could see her. He took off her sunglasses and rolled up her sleeves. He gasped at the bruise he saw there, "Let me guess if I washed your face, I'd find marks and probably scars on your body." His voice was soft, safe and warm.

She could only nod. "Oh, Mare." He held her and she cried. After what felt like hours, she let him go.

"Save me?" She looked up at him with tears in her eyes. He moved from his spot and wandered through his boat until he found it.

"Here, one drop in his drink and he won't hit you ever again. Once he's six feet down, you can get on my boat and we will leave, and only come back to see your family. You can sew dresses while I sail and we can sell them in the port towns." He smiled at her.

"But, that's so permanent... I don't know if he deserves to die, he says he loves me." She looked down.

"Mare you know this isn't love, look you don't have to use it this time, but hold on to it and if you need it use it. I'm here for a month this time so you're not on a time crunch." He kissed her forehead and held her before handing her, her sunglasses and watched her leave.

The next night Adrien came home, and he beat her. He wasn't even drunk, she slowly got up, walked to the bar and poured him a glass of Tennessee whiskey, and slipped the liquid into his drink, that no law-man was ever gonna find.

No one could figure out how the healthy young rich man could just not wake up one morning, but he hit a woman for the very last time. His father handled the funeral and Mari spent her days crying with her rich heiress "friends". His father planed a beautiful funeral and Marinette stood at the front of the church and cried over him for the last time. Then for the first time, she walked out of that church alone. She listened to the church bells ringing, she stood there in a black dress with folded hands and closed eyes and she knew she was gonna be alright.

As night fell and her husband was buried in the grown, she slipped down to the docks with a small suitcase and she got on the boat with the blue-haired boy, she loved and who loved her, and together they went looking for the wild carefree girl she'd lost long ago.
