Inspired by Back to December

AN: Luka and Marinette broke up in her last year of high school. Luka was the one to end things. He was going on tour, he didn't want to slow her down. He'd also figured out Adrien and Marinette's secret identities and he knew once Adrien's eyes were open to who his lady really was he would fight him for Mari. He knew he would lose, not because it was Adrien but because he was Chat, the only one who knew Mari better than Luka. Luka is now 27 and Mari is 26, she's been married for four years, Luka hasn't seen her since.

Luka hated December, not because of Christmas, or because of snow or really anything that has to do with the actual month of December but rather what it represented. It held the decision he regretted the most. Out of all the choices he had made this one was the one he hated himself for the most. He'd left Marinette, his muse, his melody, the love of his life. He'd left her when Jagged asked him to join him on the road. He'd learn something he shouldn't have and it gave him a moment of doubt, so he took the night Marinette had planned to celebrate his first step in reaching his dream and made it a night they both couldn't forget.

Tonight was the six-year anniversary of that night, he was back in Pairs doing a roots tour. This was a dive bar show one of his favourite types of show, the crowd was smaller, more intimate, he could be more open with those shows. He sat on a stool on the stage and pulled out his oldest acoustic guitar.  "Hello, everyone." The crowd gave a greeting back, "Tonight isn't one of my favourite nights, and I'm feeling a bit melancholy tonight so allow me to play a song then we will go throw the normal show kay?" The crowd clapped.

He slowly started playing a TSwift song, he heard the shocked murmurs through the crowd, he was a punk rock guy, not a pop song guy.

He slowly played the cords of Back to December.  He closed his eyes and sang, while memories rolled over him.

He thought back to Mari's wedding, she looked beautiful in her Gabriel Agrest original gown. She found him at the reception, "Hey Luka, thanks for coming How's life? Tell me, how's your family? I haven't seen them in a while." She smiled at him, he smiled back.

"I've been good, busier than ever."  They proceeded to small talk, work and the weather. For the first time, he could recall her guard was up around him. She didn't look comfortable. So he said goodbye and made a point of not seeing her again if she hadn't made a point of inviting him to her wedding he wouldn't have even come...

Next, he thought of the time before when he saw her, still burned in the back of his mind. "Luka!" He walked into her apartment "That press release was amazing! You and Jagged are gonna be an amazing duo!" She kissed him with passion. "Look I bought you flowers! You always buy me flowers so I thought you should get you some." She pointed to the bouquet with all different types of blue flowers on her table.

She made his favourite meal, his favourite dessert and even wore his favourite outfit of hers. "Mari, I can't do this anymore. We both know distance is gonna kill us, why kid ourselves?"

"Luka, please just let me have tonight... We can deal with that tomorrow." She held him and they both cried, the second time he cried in front of her. They had a great last night together. He left while she slept in the middle of the night, leaving the flowers to die along with their relationship.

He remembered two weeks earlier that year when he saw Adrien and Marinette detransform in the same battle as Viperion. He knew once they learned the truth Adrien would fight for Mari, it made him mad, he would only want the girl he loved when he learned she was his lady. But could he really beat Adrien, well yes he had, but could he beat Chat Noirm the person Ladybug, Marinette trusted most? That's when fear crept into his mind, she gave him all her love and all he gave her was goodbye.

He remembers weeks before that when he learned that his father had been his hero, Jagged Stone, and how she held him in her arms that September night The first time she ever saw him cry.

He thought back to the summer they spent every day together, her riding on the back of the bike, how she told him, she loved him the fall.

He opened his eyes and finished the song,

Maybe this is wishful thinkin'
Probably mindless dreamin'
But if we loved again, I swear I'd love you right

I'd go back in time and change it, but I can't
So if the chain is on your door, I understand

But this is me swallowin' my pride
Standin' in front of you sayin' I'm sorry for that night
And I go back to December
It turns out freedom ain't nothin' but missin' you
Wishin' I'd realized what I had when you were mine
I'd go back to December, turn around and make it alright
I'd go back to December, turn around and change my own mind
I go back to December all the time
All the time

As he played the end of the song, he looked and saw a woman with her hood up covering her face, she handed him a note, he normally refused it, but something about this woman seemed familiar, safe even, so he took it. He played the rest of the show and it went well. In his dressing room, he opened the note, it was written on a bar napkin.

If you meant what you sang,
I'll be waiting at our meeting spot,
Don't keep me waiting Vie.

He had to be dreaming right? She was married why would she be here? He needed to know. He changed as quickly as he could. He headed to the park bench they always met up at. She was already there, a deep green hoodie hiding her features. "Mel?"

"Lu." Her voice was soft and warm. She ushered for him to sit.

He sat down, "Why are you here? Shouldn't you be with Adrien?"

"Nice to see you too." She giggled, "I came to see you, and talk to you, to make you an offer, but I didn't want to do it without you."

"Oh?" He turned to look at her.

"I want to go back too." She looked away.

"Why? You're with you the boy who saved Paris with you, the one who understands you better than anyone." He offered her hand out of habit.

"Once I learned what I assumed you already knew, I understood why you didn't fight for us. But it isn't the happily ever after we thought it would be." She slipped off her hood, showing off a bruise. He gasped, "Before you ask no he didn't hit me, well not exactly really, he still fights in sleep, he refuses to go to therapy and hides away like his father. I know people thought we here soulmates but I don't think I'm the one who can save him from himself."

"But Mar, we can't go back. It's not possible." Luka would be lying if he hadn't wished he could second chance this back, but he couldn't.

"But we can." She rolled up her sleeve and showed off his bracelet. "Sass and I have been training and as the Gardien, I can take us back, and we will see how strong your snake senses still are, and maybe we can make it right. Sure it means going back to our awkward teen selves, deal with a passives kitty and Lila and beat Shadow Mouth all over again, but we could do it right. I could handle Lila better, we could beat Shadow Mouth better and maybe give Adrien a better life, and we could be together."

"What if I don't remember?" He hadn't worn the snake in years.

"I will, and you loved me for years." She smiled. "We don't have to though I just wanted to get away from it all but, I want to do it better not just run away."

Luka couldn't figure out how Tiki would let her do this, from the few times he met her as Viperion he had gathered she was very by the book, he moved her hair away from her ears, "Where's Tiki?"

"My earrings are in the box in my bag." she opened the bag and he saw the little black box. "So go back with me?"

"How could I say no? I've hated this day for years. Regretted it since I left you that night. Don't you need to transform?"

"Nope, I've learned how to use a few of them without being in the suit. All I need to do is pick a time to back to and a second chance will take us there." She squeezed his hand, "Any ideas?"

"The day before I become Truth. Let's try this right, go on the date we picked before." She smiled, she seemed to agree.

"Hold me." They stood, he wrapped her arms around her waist, "Second Chance."

With a flash Luka found himself standing out of the bakery. Holding his phone, he was going to leave without texting her, she'd forgotten their date. Not this time. He walked inside the bakery, "Luka my boy!" Tom bellowed.

"Hello Sir, mind if I go up to Marinette's room and get her for our date, I think she's wrapped up in a project again." Sabine smiled at her husband as they let him upstairs.

He headed up to her room and opened the trap door, to find her pulling photos of Adrien down and reorganizing her room, "I'd forgotten how creepy this all really looks." she shuttered.

"Hey, come to the movie with me first, then we can come back and decided how we are gonna play this timeline." He opened his arms wide for a hug.

"I knew you would remember." She embraced him, he felt home again. This time they would make the timeline better for everyone.
