10- Wine
Elira slipped on her dress for the night, a Burgundy strapless gown with a flowy, layered organza and tulle skirt that would glide with her as she danced. She stepped out of the room so that her dresser could lace up the back
She sighed thinking about the night to come.
Her having to make polite conversation with people she barely knew.
The dance with the crown prince
Sigh
She smiled a bit when she remembered that Yoongi would be there.
That would alleviate the pain a little bit.
"Your highness?" the bespectacled woman said, handing Elira her rings and sash for the night, pinning the brooches once she had slipped it on.
After clasping the necklace and putting on the crown, Elira wore her heels, twirling for a second before walking out the door, letting Alder lead her to the ballroom.
....
Yoongi nodded as one of the dignitaries spoke about the current climate crisis, mentally zoning out as he smiled.
"Her Royal Highness, Princess Elira of Avar!"
The announcement rang around the hall as Elira walked in, in her burgundy gown, the tulle and Swarovski shining in the low lights, diamonds like ice glinting on her neck and head.
Yoongi's breath hitched as she turned to him and smiled.
She walked into the crowd, smiling and talking to everyone as the soft music resumed in the background.
Yoongi stole glances every few seconds as Elira entertained her fellow guests, laughing ever so often after making a clever remark.
He couldn't take his eyes off her. Namjoon nudged Yoongi in his shoulders, "You're making it obvious now,"
"What-"
"Stop staring at her," he whispered with a smug smirk, causing Yoongi to blush, focusing on another attendee in front of him.
Namjoon didn't know about what had gone down between Elira and Yong-saeng. He still thought Elira was here for Yoongi, completely oblivious about the truth.
"The king is entering, Let the Daechwita begin!" the conductor bellowed, followed by the sounding of a gong and drums, the shrill pitch of the brass trumpets commanding attention to the entrance of the ballroom, where King Ye-jun walked in a finely tailored suit, Queen Aera in a delicate ballgown on his right and Prince Yong-saeng on his left.
Elira spotted Yoongi as he walked up to them and stood by his mother's side.
The royal family of Korea, all in one place.
They walked in slowly, waiting for the Daechwita to end, following which they dispersed into the crowd again, The King and Queen sticking next to each other as The princes split, keeping up the spirits of the gala.
Low piano music played as the leaders and representatives, young and old, fraternised with each other.
Elira felt someone lean next to her ear, their warm breath fanning her ear
"Princess Elira?" She heard Yong-Saeng ask, turning around to face the handsome man, a shy smile on his face.
"May I have this dance?" He asked, his gloved hand outstretched
She looked over to the piano, Yoongi sitting down, nodding to her, encouragement on his face.
"You may," she said as she placed her hand, the two of them making their way to the centre.
Yoongi started as a hushed silence fell in the hall, the lively piano music prompting Elira and Yong saeng to dance, sashaying across the floor as Yong saeng laughed, Elira smiling but not meeting his eyes.
The two most powerful kingdoms, celebrating their alliance and peace by dancing. Elira had always laughed at the absurdity, knowing they'd be at each other's necks the first chance they got.
She hadn't ever considered the very real possibility of her having to take part in it.
She danced, her eyes never leaving Yoongi at the white piano, who melted into the background for everyone.
Everyone except her
To her, he stood out. Like a diamond in the rough. He shone as he played, a smirk on his lips, his eyes closed, complete faith in his hands, trusting the fingers to move where they should be based on pure muscle memory.
She danced with his brother as he was lost in the music.
And Yong saeng didn't miss Elira's gaze not being his, following her eyes to see it trained on his little brother, jealousy flaring in his heart.
There he goes, taking something that was supposed to be his
He gritted his teeth and pulled her closer, only for Elira to shoot him a glare for a split second, before catching herself, turning away.
"I guess there's no chance at all now, hmm?" Yong-saeng muttered, his face stone cold as Elira turned to look at him in confusion
She had sworn she had completely told him no.
Foolish of him to still hold onto false hope, she thought
Yoongi ended with a flourish, a beaming smile on his face as everyone faced Elira and Yong saeng and clapped, his smile fading as no one acknowledged his presence.
He looked up to find Elira looking at him and smiling, her hands clapping as she very obviously cheered for him.
He did a subtle bow before clapping himself.
The band took over the instruments once again, the guests all picking random partners and dancing in the centre.
Elira walked away from the centre, off to one side, her arms crossed, a glass of champagne in one hand when she saw Yoongi walk up to her.
He grabbed a glass of wine from one of the servers and stood by her, keeping an eye out for anyone who might be too interested in them.
"You were marvellous," Elira said, a soft smile gracing her lips.
Yoongi felt his face heat up, bringing up the glass of wine to his lips for a sip before saying, "Thank you,"
Yoongi pulled on his tie and loosened it, "Want to go somewhere quieter?"
Elira raised an eyebrow, swirling the drink in her glass, "Wouldn't that be suspicious?"
Yoongi shrugged his shoulders, "Does it even matter? "
"Uhhh, yes Yoongi, I'm an ambassador and cannot just-"
Yoongi grabbed her glass, cutting her sentence short,
"Hey!"
"I see you're not enjoying that. My room, after this show is done, I'll give you some real alcohol,"
Elira rolled her eyes as Yoongi walked away from her, mischief written all over his face
....
Elira took her leave once the King and Queen withdrew for the evening, Alder walking by her side as she considered Yoongi's plan.
She stopped Alder, taking a couple of steps before turning back, "Your highness?"
"Do you know where is Prince Yoongi's room?"
