Making requests are super hard so here are some tips about how to make requests on Wattpad. Please note that all designers and requesters have different processes and that this will not work for everyone but could be helpful.
1. Non-Commercial only in the MDC
All graphics requested over Wattpad should be for non-commercial use, which means you should not be getting money from your story. A lot of designers on Wattpad use resources that they don't have licenses for or that are for personal use only. If you want to publish your book to sell, pay a graphic designer to design your cover. Always make sure you have the right licenses to use images and fonts when publishing your books.
Note: If you are a designer looking to make money on making book covers, do not do it on Wattpad. You can redirect people off of Wattpad to your online store but Wattpad does not support using its services for monetary transactions. [ if you would like tips on freelancing let me know~ ]
2. Read the Rules/Information
Often times I've seen people ask questions that could be answered in reading the blurbs above the forms. Some designers also include important information there as well.
3. Don't be too specific or too vague.
You need to give your designer something to work with but don't paint them a complete picture. Give the designer some artistic liberties to make decisions but give them somewhere to start. Mention typical cliches the designer might go for. If you're writing a werewolf story and you don't want a wolf on it — mention it — or you might get a wolf.
4. Do some research
Although it is the designers job to find resources. Do your own searches to see what you can find, this can also give you ideas for what you would want. Also look into specifics, if your book has a character with a sword, what kind is it and does that matter? Katanas look a lot different from longswords. Maybe your book is about pirates, typically their swords are more rounded in comparison to medieval knights.
5. Be organized
Some of the best ways of breaking up your ideas is with bullet points, no matter what the form is there is always space for bullet points or phrases. Not only does it help you organize your ideas. It might help your designer understand your request better.
6. Redos
Most designers will do small redoes. Know what to ask for and do not edit a cover someone has made you.
7. Do not give teaser summaries
I get it, you don't want to spoil the end of your story. But you can't give those vague, hook grabbing, summaries to your designer. They need to know what your book is about if you want a cover to best reflect your story.
"Life is all about taking chances even with the fear of failing. One never knows if they will fail or not if they don't actually take the chance."
The summary above is one I've been given before. We don't need to know how the story ends, but we need to know what happens.
8. Stop saying "dark"
I've gotten so many request where people are just like "dark". What does it mean? Somber? Edgy? Thriller? Out past midnight? Twisted?
A cover can convey a "dark gory" mood without being black.
9. Using the cover
Tell your designer if you're going to use the cover. You can like a book cover, but if it doesn't represent your book, let them know. Designers can use them as premades.
