Such a Lady Killer
Twelve miles northeast of Tokyo at the exact coordinates of 35°57'36.91"N, 139°44'26.64"E is Ryoo Highschool. There isn't anything exceedingly super about the high school itself, it was private, and like many other private high schools it required an entrance exam. No, the highschool wasn't very special, but instead the occupants inside were of the 'special' kind.
"Yo," Haru says as he pulls up a seat to a desk.
The desk had 3 people sitting at it for lunch, Yuji, Keiji, and Jun.
"What's up?" Yuji asks with a rice ball shoved in his mouth.
"Not much, just chillin." Haru says as he sits down. "Shou brought his mom's cookies again."
"Does she just make batches every week?" Keiji asks.
"I'm not complaining, those cookies are the only thing between us and an angry Sakuraba." Jun adds.
"Facts." Haru replies.
"Yeah, No cap!" Yuji says completely misusing the term as the others laugh.
'Never teach Yuji another internet term ever again' Jun telepathically communicates to Keiji.
'Internet term? Dude it's 2002, WTF do you mean?' Keiji replies shattering the 4th wall.
The two nod before returning back to the normal. It could have stayed a relatively normal lunch, the football boys talking about their funny oval ball game and how they have no girlfriends, but Haru woke up that day and chose violence in the form of a blue foam football he had.
Pulling it out of his backpack, Yuji instinctively got up, Haru quickly gestured for him to sit back down and looked to Jun.
"Jun, go long!" He says as Jun gets up and starts running over to the opposite side of the room.
Running through the gap between the desks he sees Haru drop back and with his signature quick release throw a dime in less than second across the room. Jun sees the ball, but Haru was used to throwing to a 5'11 Yuji and not a 5'4 Jun, it soared above him but he wouldn't let it slide, jumping up he secures the ball and pulls it to his core. Quickly looking back down behind him he realized that he was not a collision course for 3 girls who were gathered around a desk of their own.
---
"I always save the strawberry for last, but sometimes I get full and I end up not eating it, or somebody else takes it from me." A purple haired girl said.
"Your favorites gotta come first." A blue haired girl butted in.
"Oh shit!" A guy across the room says
In less than a second all of them snap upwards and see that a mobile 190 piece of human muscle had jumped up in the air, and was now on a collision course with all 3 of them and their desk. Left with no time to react none of them could get out of the way before the inevitable happened. He came crashing down onto the desk breaking one of the legs, bouncing off he collides directly with the blue haired girl and fell all the way to the ground, all 190 pounds of him on top of her came crashing down to the floor directed on her arm, and as they came down they both heard a sickening snap.
The two of them get up and get a hold of their bearings while everybody else watches the two of them stumble to their feet. the girl winces as she puts weight on her arm and instead drags herself up by the other one, Jun pushes himself to his feet and helps her up. The two look each other in the eye, neither of them saying a word.
'What am I supposed to do?' Jun thinks internally panicking.
He wasn't a coward by any stretch, Jun had taken on Cowboys, Raiders, Ravens, and Vikings but talking to a girl was easily far out of his league.
"I...I-I'm sorry." He says sounding more like a question than a statement.
"It's fine," She says before wincing from pain.
Her friends take hold of her and bring her the nurses office and Jun walks over to the desk football in hand.
"I caught it." He says handing Haru the ball back trying to ignore what he just did.
"Yeah, you did," Haru replies putting the ball back in his bag.
"Such a lady killer," Yuji adds sarcastically.
"Shut the hell up." Jun replies putting his head in his hands.
---
The rest of the day was a blur for him, he felt nothing but an overwhelming sense of dread in every waking moment. The girl may have said that it was fine, but he doubted that the school would see it the same way.
The hours dragged on and Jun was in his final class, Algebra. As usual Jun wasn't paying attention in class and instead was playing harvest moon on his GBA. The teacher rambled on about x's and y's while Jun planted his crops and occasionally glanced up at the clock to see how long was left in class.
'2 or so minutes left' He thinks looking up at the clock and back down to his game.
Walking his character back to bed he goes to sleep for the night and he catches the teacher walking down the alleys to pass out homework. Just in time he shoves the handheld back into his bag and grabs the paper his teacher gave him. Looking back down, without the distraction of his game the overwhelming wave of guilt and dread came back over him.
'Say, did you know people with guilty consciences are more easily startled by loud no-' He thinks before the bell rings and he jumps in his seat.
Shoving the homework into his bag he dashes out of the school and starts on the trek back home. It was only around 3:40, there was plenty of sunlight left to burn off, but Jun opted for dashing back home and getting out of sight of anybody.
'I'm gonna get kicked off the team.' He thinks as he keeps on walking by.
---
Sitting in the coaches office Coach Hamasaki sits at the desk opposite of him and looks down.
"You're a great player, but that type of behavior is unacceptable." He says.
He opens his mouth in attempt to defend himself but Hamasaki cuts him off.
"I know that's not you, I tried to fight it, but administration's adamant, I'm sorry." He adds.
"I understand." Jun replies looking down at the ground.
---
Pulling himself out of his imagination he keeps on walking forward home.
'Why am I worrying about the team? I'm gonna get kicked out of school' He thinks turning the corner.
Walking a little more he continues until he finally makes it home. He lived in a small shinto temple not too far from town. Opening up the door and throwing his stuff down in his room he scurries outside to his home gym in the backyard.
'It's not like it's over, worse comes to worse, I can manage the temple' He thinks as he loads a plate on the bar.
Hopping on the bench he puts his hands up on the bar and lifts it in the air.
'That's not awful, in fact it would be quite nice' He thinks lowering the bar down.
pushing the bar back up he keeps on going for a few reps. All the while he imagines himself in the traditional robes tending the the temple alone.
'The donation box is awful light as of late though.' He thinks remembering all 24 yen that was in it last time he checked.
He thinks back to an old miko he knew who had a chip the size of Africa on her shoulder because she never got any donations whatsoever. Briefly he imagined himself as that same type of bitter old man sitting alone on the temple steps ranting to anybody who comes nearby.
'Scary thought, but I guess that's life now.' He thinks as he racks the bar.
Hopping up he looks back at his little home gym which had a power rack, bar, a lot of weights, and a punching bag in the corner.
'At least I'll be the most buff geki in all of Japan.' He thinks before walking back inside.
*Timeskip to the next day brought to you by a commercial break*
It was the very end of the school day and Jun dashed out of the classroom. Throughout the entire day he could only think of one thing, and that was he owed whoever that girl was a huge apology, however there was a little issue in that.
'Who the hell is she?' He thinks.
Walking down the hallway he racked his mind trying to remember who this person was.
'Come on, who else has natural blue hair like that, I should know this' He thought cursing himself out.
"Hey Jun." One of his teachers, Ms. Kuroi, says.
'If I don't know, she knows.' He thinks.
"Hi, can I ask you a question?" He asks.
"You just did." She replies.
"Do you know who the blue haired girl in class is?" He asks.
"Oh, yeah, Izumi, why ask?" She asks perking one eyebrow up.
"Oh, I owe her something." He replies.
"Okay, see you tomorrow." She says as she walks off.
He walks through the city and finds a phone booth. He quickly jumps inside he takes a look through the phonebook and sifts through names before he finds the one he's looking for
'Izumi residence, that must be it.' He thinks as he pulls out his own flip phone.
punching in the numbers on his phone he hears a ring and waits for somebody to pick up.
...
...
"Hello, Izumi residence." A man on the other end picks up.
"Hello, I'm Jun Nii, I'm a student at Ryoo high school, I need to speak with your daughter." He replies.
'Now I'm sounding really creepy.' He thinks.
"No problem, just hold for a second." The man replies
He can hear a muted conversation as he stays on the line, his heart rate picked up as the seconds ticked by.
'How exactly do I apologize to a person whose arm I broke?' He thinks. 'A sorry certainly wouldn't cut it, maybe money? a new arm?'
"Hey, who's calling?" A girl replies.
"I-um, the guy who broke your arm?" He replies slipping on his words.
"Oh, you, what's up?" She asks cheerful.
'She's not mad?' He thinks perplexed.
"I'm sorry for breaking your arm, I want to make it up to you, what do you want?" He asks.
"Oh, no, no need to make it up to me, in fact, I want to thank you." She says.
"What?" He says perplexed.
"I got to miss a day of school, and any time I get to miss a day I'm happy, playing video games was a little difficult but I worked through it." She replies cheerful as ever. "You know though, for an athlete of your caliber, you've got a lot of chub on you."
"What?" He asks.
"I said you're really heavy, you have a lot of chub." She answers.
"No, I have a lot of muscle, only some of it's chub." He ripostes.
"A lot more than you'd like to think, you must love your snacks." She returns.
"I have a very strict diet." He says.
"I can imagine, it must be hard to eat only cheesecake and cookies 3 meals a day." She responds.
"No, I eat potatoes and lean protein." He counters.
"Okay, Okay, you're healthy." She says sarcastically, "Say, if you really want to make it up to me, how about you go and buy me the new kingdom hearts game that everyone is talking about." She demands.
"Oh, that game, it's pretty good," He says.
"You've played it before?" She asks.
"Yeah, play stuff like that all the time." He replies.
"Okay, well I live at ■■■■■ nearby the ■■■■ we've got a big sign which says Izumi residence, can't miss it." She says, "I expect my game soon."
"I've got it." He replies
"See you soon." She says before hanging up.
'Well, doesn't seem to bothered by it, now, let's go get that game.' He thinks as he dashes off to the train station.
Lucky Channel Sports Center
The cover drops away as it reveals 3 people sitting at a table, one a girl with salmon pink hair in a suit with sleeves far too long for her small stature, another a 5'4 man with a blue jersey with the number 75 on it, and finally a 5'8 man with the same jersey on instead featuring a number 13 on it.
"Morning luckies! You're watching Lucky Channel Sports Center on LCSPN!" The girl shouts excitedly waving her arms in the air. "I'm Akira Kogami."
"I'm Jun Nii." #75 says
"And I'm Haru Meyada." #13 says.
"Now I know it's early, but we've already gotten a lot of letters of congratulations from our dear viewers!" She shouts.
Jun pulls out a piece of paper and looks at the text.
"This one comes from, '827HT' in Osaka, Congratulations on the new show up on TV." Jun reads out.
"That's a thank you!" Akira butts in.
"By the way, I have a question for Haru, what is a quarterback and what do they do?" Jun completes. "Haru, want to take it from here?" He asks.
"Thank you Jun, well, 827, if you're watching, I'll answer your question. The quarterback is the guy who receives the ball from the center, depending on the play he either passes, hands off the ball to the running back, or runs the ball himself. They're usually the leaders of the offense, relaying the coaches plays and keeping everyone in order. There are plenty of other duties a quarterback has, but those are the basics." Haru explains.
"827, are you seriously watching a sports channel right now, and you don't know what the quarterback is?" Akira says suddenly shifting moods.
The 2 look at her as her normally cheery face turns into a dreary and overall mean looking one.
"I never saw a single second of Gridiron Football in my life, and I still knew what the quarterback when I was at least 4." She adds. "Why are you watching a sports channel if you aren't invested enough to even know the most basic things."
"It's not that big of a deal." Haru says trying to diffuse the situation.
"No, I'd say it's a pretty big deal, imagine if a kid rolled up to training camp with you guys and didn't know what a quarterback was, you'd chew him out a lot worse than I am would you not?" She asks.
"Well, yeah, but that's training camp and this is a TV show, we haven't even seen 827's face." Jun replies.
The director signals the time and Akira quickly goes back to her usual cutesy demeanor.
"Oh, looks like we're out of time, and so, we're going to have to end the segment, please send Akira lots of praise and questions as well as opinions on the show as a whole! A word from our co stars?" She says gesturing to the two of them.
"Say your prayers and eat your vegetables." Jun says.
"stay safe out there." Haru adds.
The camera shuts off but the audio is still rolling
"So, how does it feel being main characters?" Akira asks without the faux cuteness.
"It's okay, pay's good, and there's free drinks." Haru replies.
The audio finally shuts down for good and the directors signals the end.
