Chapter 6
ENID
I stayed still in my seat as we continued to hold eye contact. I was starting to feel those dang butterflies again. He looked away when someone tapped on his arm. I cleared my throat and cursed myself internally for allowing that to happen. I tried to settle my upset stomach but the stupid feeling just wouldn't go! I connected to the bus wifi and talked to my best friend on Instagram. But there was that nagging voice at the back of my mind telling me to look back at him and I did. His gaze was directly on me with a smirk on his face. I looked away immediately feeling heat rush to my cheeks.
Why was I feeling like that?
As if I offended the Devil, the bus ride was going to be awfully long. Why? Because it was a bus that stops to pick up other people. I took off my jacket because the bus was warm and I was feeling a little overheated in it. From the corner of my eye, I could see him laughing once more with his friends. I could tell, he liked to laugh a lot. Something I rarely did. I looked to where Esme sat down. She was on her phone. I wasn't in the mood to utter anything so I sent her a text.
Wake me up when we're close to the stop.
She looked up from her phone and smiled at me. I pocketed my phone and sat back leaning my head on the headrest. I wasn't actually going to sleep. I wasn't exactly happy to see him again. I didn't know why I was feeling that way. Everything was so new. My stomach had never buzzed like that before. I wondered if he was going to get down before me. I wouldn't like to pass him and his friends once more if Esme and I were getting off before him.
After some long minutes of staring out the window and watching the trees pass by, the bus was close to the mall. As if it read my mind, our stop arrived. I heard Esme's approaching footsteps and I took up my jacket and stood up. I muttered curses under my breath as I felt his eyes on me and I walked past his booth.
I got off the bus and stepped outside into the unforgiving cold. I wished I put my jacket on before getting off. I waited for Esme to get off as I tried to put on my jacket. You know that moment when you can't put your hand into the sleeve. Yeah, that one. It happened to me. I struggled until someone helped me from behind. I felt my hand slip into the warmth the jacket provided. I turned around to see who helped me. Shoot me.
He stood there with a sly smirk on his features. I was astonished as I looked at him close up. His eyes were so intriguing. I watched as they twinkled in the little sunlight that shined. He cleared his throat and said with a very British voice. "You're welcome." I looked down at my feet and looked back at him. He was walking away. And I let him do so. I felt someone tap my shoulder and I turned around to see Esme.
"Ready?" She said. I only nodded. I could not help but look back at him. He was long gone with his friends. I wondered if we were ever going to meet again somewhere. I tried to avoid the bodies of people as I walked into Primark. I felt Esme grab my hand and pull me to a section of clothes. I wasn't interested in gowns and skirts but the other way round. "Enid, how about we split up and meet back somewhere with our clothes later. Grab a basket and pick as much as you want. Enid, this is for you. You deserve it. Don't hold yourself back." I gave her a 'what the actual fuck' look. All my life, I never got any special attention from her, and all of a sudden she was pampering me now?
She smiled at me as she got lost in the rows of gowns and frilly skirts. I walked out of that section and went to get my basket. I got one and stood at the centre of the mall. Now where to begin? There were three floors. The top floor was for shoes and bags. The second floor consisted of Atmosphere and the last floor was the kids' section. I checked that out first because I wanted to see the varieties I had. I saw a few cotton tee shirts with cool captions that caught my eye. I took them obviously. I got myself a pair of new jeans and several sweatshirts. I got a new beanie and hoodie. I stopped suddenly when it all felt too good to be true. Nevertheless, I continued shopping. I wasn't a fan of accessories but I got myself a fanny pack.
Soon, I got tired and called Esme, who seemed to want to keep on shopping. I gave her a few more minutes to finish up. I was starving too! I browsed through my gallery in an attempt to kill time. Soon, Esme came by with her basket nearly full. We hurled our load to the checkout counter and paid. I was surprised to see that we didn't even use up to half of the money.
"I'm starving, "I said out loud to no one in particular. Hoping Esme heard it, but she didn't. "Esme, I'm starving," I said once more calling her name. She gasped and rushed out, "Oh I'm sorry Enid, you didn't have breakfast. Let's get you something to eat." I wanted to go to Mc Donald's but I was sure Emse wasn't a big fan of Mc Donald's. I missed going there with my friends. After convincing Esme, I walked through the door and went straight for the counter. Luckily, they weren't much in line. When it was my turn, I ordered a chicken legend with hot and spicy mayo.
Esme ordered something entirely different. I tuned out her order cause why not? After the normal waiting process, I walked upstairs with Esme following hot on my heels and I chose a far booth to the end. I took off my jacket because it was warm. I was about to start eating when I heard that familiar laughter. Every ounce of hunger left, hatching the caterpillars once swallowed.
