Chapter 1
As winter set in the Lloyd residence, Enid felt the usual buzz of packing up. Every winter, they go to their hometown, London. It was always lovely, meeting relatives and dinners almost every day. But Enid never seemed to enjoy them. Why? That's because she spends all that time alone. Isolated to watch from a distance. That's pretty sad actually.
Enid sat down on a stool and stared at an ant who carried a crystal of sugar on its tiny body. She smiled at it. That smile turned upside down when her mom squashed it with her index finger. She looked up at the woman with a frown. "Who are you frowning at? You Chav!" Her mom said. Enid winced at her harsh words but she kept quiet. She knew she wouldn't be allowed out of her room if she talked back. She was a rather smart girl. She looked at her shoes as her mother ranted on. "Go pack your bags, we're leaving soon."
Enid walked quietly to her room which was the smallest in the house. She passed her sister's room and saw her packing her luxuriant dresses into her large suitcase. She sighed and continued her journey to her room. She closed her door behind her after listening to its familiar creaking. She knew deep down that her parents could fix the door but they'd rather spend that money on Esme, her sister. She crashed on her bed and closed her eyes. Shortly after she got up. She walked to her closet that contained dresses once worn by Esme. As a matter of fact, all her clothes were 'hand me downs'. She put her frilly hair in a messy bun. She stuffed all her clothes neatly into her suitcase which wasn't as large as her sister's.
Enid was not in the mood for her family at that moment. So she decided to take a walk to her best friend's house which wasn't quite far from hers. As usual, she passed her sister's room who was still packing. Guess, she had a lot to pack! That only infuriated Enid more. Esme crossed the line when she said. "Help a sister out Enid?" Enid closed her eyes and took a deep breath and retraced her steps. She walked into the familiar room. She stood awkwardly in the room and then uttered her first words that day. "How much is left?" She looked at the suitcase which was no way near being full. She knew she was going to stay with Esme for a long time and that, she didn't want.
"I believe you're done with packing. Taking up the fact that you don't have much?" Esme asked and Enid felt a stab once again on her very bruised heart. Nevertheless, Enid continued packing and managed to ignore Esme the whole time. After a long torturous hour of awkwardness, Enid burst out of Esme's room and realised that time had gone. She couldn't see her best friend anymore. She needed to but she couldn't. Sighing, she trailed back to her room to get dressed. She didn't want to be blamed for them missing their flight. Again.
She dragged her average-sized suitcase down the stairs to their car. Taking her seat in the very back, she rested her head on the window and thought, 'Another terrible winter to come'. She knew she had to sit at the back. The last time she tried to stay in front, they ended up ditching her. Again, pretty sad right? Soon, she heard her family's chatter and stiffened when she saw her father, Flynn Lloyd alongside her mother, Ruby Lloyd. Then lastly, the golden daughter came along, Esme Lloyd. Then they had her, the unwanted one, Enid Lloyd. They all entered the car and started it up. The whole ride was filled with Esme talking about her adventures in her prep school. Enid hated every bit of it!
Enid woke up but by the sound of the door slamming shut. Her eyes widened as she saw her parents walking ahead but Esme was nowhere near them. She looked in the car where Esme sat and saw her fast asleep there. She breathed out a sigh of relief. But deep down, she knew that her parents could actually leave her but seeing as Esme was there with her she felt more relaxed. No doubt she hated Esme, but she felt comfortable in her presence than that of her parents. Enid always felt like the black sheep, the one everyone hates. But Esme actually cared for her. Enid hated Esme because she had it all, the attention, the love, the new dresses, and basically everything she wanted.
Their parents came back shortly and got the luggage down from the car. Enid stayed quiet throughout the whole thing and watched with envy in her eyes as her mother woke Esme up lovingly. She rolled her eyes and got down later on. She had her small suitcase by her side and walked behind her sister towards the airport. She stepped into the airport and heard the usual chatter of an airport. She followed her sister and watched in pain as her own parents didn't even acknowledge her presence. They all checked in and were given their seats on the plane. She knew in her gut that she wasn't going to like her seat on the plane. She looked down on her boarding pass and her sister's own. Esme was flying First Class. So was her parents and she looked down on her own and became furious. Enid was flying Economy class!
"Mother, Father, why am I flying Economy class and Esme, First class?" She asked. Their heads turned to her and her father gave her a sickening smile. "Enid, you're too young to fly First class. You can never be on the same level as your sister. Got it?" She retorted. "I'm not too young, I'm 16!" He rose an eyebrow at me and lowered his voice. "One more word from you girl, and say bye-bye to this trip." That shut her up. She wasn't ready to be alone for the winter. In absolute silence between the Lloyd family, they boarded the plane. Enid was directed to the back of the plane while the rest were directed to the top. She sighed in relief when she realised she had a window seat. She buckled up and listened to the monotone voice of the pilot.
With time, the plane was on the runway and off the surface of the earth. London, welcome the sophisticated Lloyd family!
