THE MUSIC COULD BE HEARD before the school could even be seen. Continuous thumping of dance music hit Melanie's ears as soon as the two of them left the park. From a distance, she couldn't make out what song it was but it was obvious that it was some top hit in the charts. Louis' nose wrinkled as he listened to the music.
"Bit tedious, is it not?" he questioned.
Melanie glanced up at him and shrugged. "I like most music so I don't mind it. I suppose it depends on your music taste. What sort of music do you like if not the ridiculously catchy pop with annoyingly good choruses?"
Louis chuckled quietly. "I don't really have a music taste. I was surrounded by angel chorus and hymns for the majority of my life in Heaven and they taunt me still to this day. I wouldn't say it's terrible song - angel song, that is - it's just something that reminds me of those days."
"So, all church songs and religious tune is all you really know? Damn," Melanie said, shaking her head. "I need to educate in music, Louis. I have great CDs and so do my parents. A bit of rock here and there and then more classical. I love classical."
"You continue you to surprise me every day, Melanie Cooper," Louis told her as he gently grasped her hand in his and twirled her around. "A woman of many surprises."
She laughed quietly at his words, enjoying the way he almost classed her as some incredible figure told of in bed time stories or around the camp fire. He spoke so highly of her at times, that she found it ridiculously amusing that he was still friendly with her and wanted to be seventy years into the future.
"I don't care what your excuses are Lucifer, but you're going to dance with me before you disappear back to Hell," she strictly told him.
Louis was baffled. "Of course," he said incredulously, as if her statement were the more obvious thing in the world. "If I remember correctly, this is a dance we're heading to, no?"
"Yeah, but you were so reluctant to go, so I needed to be very clear and thorough with you. We're gonna dance like it's the last night of our lives."
"Well, I'm immortal so I don't know how I'll end up dancing as the hours go on..." Louis said, trailing off as the pair of them turned left, and entered through the school gates. There were several students standing outside the gates smoking, several were making out by the school doors and then there were others who were chatting away quite happily before entering the building. Melanie and Louis walked by them all, straight into the school where the music instantly grew louder.
"Holy shit," Melanie suddenly gasped. Louis jumped slightly and turned to face her, a frown on his face.
"What?" he asked.
"Are you visible? Can everyone here see you? Because if not, I will hate you for making me look like a complete arse by walking in here by myself."
Louis laughed loudly and nodded. "I'm as visible as ever. Don't worry, I would never trick you."
"Says the father of lies and manipulation," Melanie scoffed before linking her arm with his.
Louis grinned down at her as he extended his free arm towards the school canteen. "Shall we?"
Melanie smiled at him and tugged him inside, her eyes scanning the inside of the school. All of the lunch tables and chairs had been packed away, most likely squashed into the back of the changing rooms, while in their place was a dance floor packed with students. Streamers and balloons were pinned to the doors and walls and the music was controlled by an over enthusiastic DJ with long hair tied back in a pony tail. Everyone looked to be having a good time and Melanie's smile grew larger when she recognised two familiar faces coming towards her.
"There's Molly and Derek," she told Louis, nudging him. "Let's go and socialise."
"Ew," Louis groaned before he allowed Melanie to tug him forward. "I can't believe I'm doing this."
"Well, you'd better start believing it soon, Lucifer because it's not as if you believe in anything else."
Derek enveloped Melanie in a hug as soon as he was close enough, and Melanie had to cough out a complaint before he decided to let her go. Molly hugged her too, though less ferociously.
"Thank God you're here!" Molly said, grinning widely at her. "Everyone has been waiting for you. Michael even made it! He wasn't so sure if he could make it in case shifts changed at work, but he's here!"
Louis cleared his throat and Melanie gestured to him before introducing him. "Guys, this is Louis. He's a ... family friend. Down for a couple of days and he very kindly decided to escort me to the dance."
Molly inspected him closely, but not as closely as Derek seemed to be.
"Oh, my," Derek said with a lopsided grin. "Hel-lo."
"Hey," Louis said, reaching out to shake his hand. "Nice to meet you. I've heard a lot about the two of you."
"Hey," Molly said with a smile. "It's great you could make it. It should be a lot of fun!"
"Here's hoping," Louis said with a smile. "It was nice to meet the two of you."
"Oh, you too," Derek said, waving a small goodbye as Melanie led Louis over towards the drinks. Just before they were out of earshot, Derek leaned over and whispered in her ear, "Keep him, oh my God he's delicious."
Melanie chuckled and said, "I know," before finally making it to the drinks and snacks. "Derek thinks you're dreamy," she told Louis as he picked up a cup of juice.
"I'm afraid I'll have to agree with him there," Louis said before taking a sip. "I mean, look at me."
"Cocky bastard."
"You love it."
"That's debatable."
"Don't lie to yourself, Cooper."
"Don't keep kissing your arse, Satan."
Eventually, the pair of began laughing. Louis nearly dropped his drink several times and Melanie bumped onto someone as they reached to get a drink. Throughout their time standing at the table, several curious stares found Louis and Melanie smiled triumphantly. She was proud to have him by her side, despite how odd a thing it seemed. Never in a million years did she think she'd be drinking orange juice at her senior dance with Satan himself. It was almost humorous.
Louis was dragged into the corner of the room, into an empty seat at a table. Melanie sat down opposite him and began nibbling on the finger food she had collected at the food and drink table. Louis watched her, his blue eyes brighter than ever under the disco lights. From time to time, Melanie wondered why tales portrayed him as being ugly; he was beautiful, a fallen angel cast out for his sins. Perhaps it was his heart that was ugly for wanting things such as power and worship. Melanie knew that greed was an unattractive feature and yet, with Louis she did not mind it one bit.
"Enjoying yourself so far?" she asked over the loud music.
"Well, how can I hate free food and drink with a beautiful woman who may or may not become my partner in the after life?" Louis asked with a cocked brow. He continued to observe her over the rim of his glass as he took a sip.
Melanie felt her cheeks flush. He looks so fine, she found herself thinking. She had to shake her head to clear her thoughts before answering with, "Well, free food is definitely a plus."
"As are you," he told her.
"Bless, it's like you care, Lucifer," she laughed.
"Well, if I didn't care, you'd be in Hell right now, dead and not able to live the years robbed from you. If that's not caring, then I don't know what is. What would you have been like if I had refused you a choice and you had no option but to come with me?"
Melanie thought long and hard about his question. It was odd to think that he had been in control of her life not so long ago. Even after death, he played a huge role in that; her after life. The idea wasn't the most appealing but she had no other option. She knew, however, that if Louis had refused her return to life, that Hell would literally have let loose.
"I'd have chopped what little there is of your dick off," she said bluntly before taking a sip of her drink. Louis raised a brow at her and patiently waited for her to continue. "Let's just say that I would have been one unhappy customer. Your service was not satisfactory and I'd probably have attacked you for being so cruel and unnecessarily rude."
"But I'm not that bad, Cooper," Louis said.
"I know. But you're not exactly an angel."
Louis laughed at her pun before shrugging. "Does once being one count?"
Melanie shook her head. "You were demoted for a reason, Satan."
"I lost all my privileges."
"And your wings," Melanie said, counting with her fingers, "your looks, your friends, your place, your home, your powers..." Melanie shut her mouth when noticing Louis' unimpressed face. She cleared her throat awkwardly, knowing she had crossed the line a little. "Let's just say, you were extremely unlucky."
"Cheers, mate," Louis scoffed as he stood up and straightened his suit. "Do you lot play games at these school dances or just sit around and talk?"
"I never play the games. I would maybe if the guys and I had a little drink beforehand but no. Not my thing to be honest. I like the dancing."
"What games?"
"Stupid ones like dance competitions, best couple dance. All dancing stuff."
"Wow," Louis said. "I'm so glad I'm here right now."
"Hey," Melanie complained as she stood up and wrapped her arms around him. Even through the sturdier material of his black suit, she could feel his toned chest against her own and over the loud music, his heart beat was easy to hear. "Don't be mad. Have fun, be happy. This is ending your monthly visit with a bang."
"Monthly visits," he tested, scrunching his nose afterwards. "I'm not a menstrual cycle."
Melanie laughed louder at his comment before pulling him away from the table and onto the dance floor. The crowd of bodies had dramatically increased since their arrival as everyone who had intended to join, had arrived. Melanie held Louis' hands tightly in her own as she tried to urge him to move. He wouldn't budge; all she could coax out of him was a pathetic swaying motion to the left and right. She sighed and slapped his chest before he suddenly burst into movement, shimmying across the dance floor, moving his hip and backside - which Melanie noticed looked extremely grab-able in his suit - from left to right, hands waving in the air like a lunatic. Several people stopped to observe his odd movement, but it seemed he did not care for the onlookers - he was focused on Melanie, who he was coaxing towards him with his index finger.
"No," she said, shaking her head. As she folded her arms across her chest, Louis used his own to widen the crowd around him until there was a good circular structure in the middle of the floor. The flashing lights and loud music made Melanie's heart beat louder, as well as the ridiculously attractive man who was making a complete fool of himself in the middle of the dance floor. The crowd had widened further than Melanie had thought and only when Louis pulled her to his chest, did she realise the two of them had suddenly turned into the main attraction. The realisation had Melanie saying, "I hate you," to Louis who simply shrugged.
"You love it," he taunted as he started to spin her round on the floor. Cheers erupted around them and people began to clap along to the music. Eventually, other couples joined in and by that time, Melanie was exhausted, sick to death - with no pun intended - of dancing like a headless chicken with Louis. He seemed to be tired too, as he was the first one to shuffle off of the dance floor and back over to the drinks. Melanie shuffled around the dancing crowd and over to Lucifer again, her cheeks red and heart beating loud.
"Sick moves you have," Melanie commented and she took a drink. Louis faced the table, his back turned to the crowd as he sipped.
"I know. I was keeping them especially for you, dear Melanie. I knew you would appreciate them the most."
"I'm flattered that you thinking of me," Melanie said.
"Good."
"Good."
"Excellent."
"Terrific."
"Melanie!" a voice called.
Melanie recognised the voice straight away, even over the loud thumping of the music. She squinted into the crowd until she saw the familiar blond friend of hers making his way over to the table.
"Michael!" she said, beaming. She wrapped her arms around him carefully as he hugged her back with one arm, a drink in his free hand. "I'm happy you made it. How are you doing?"
"You know, as good as I can be," he said, smiling at her. "Me and the guys are over by the bathrooms if you want to come and join us. You can bring the family friend with you too," Michel said as he gestured to Louis' turned back. "Molly and Derek were telling me.
Melanie gulped - Michael had no idea that Louis had promised to continue visiting her. She knew that Mikey would not approve of her date choice and the mere fact that Louis was in their home town, in the World of the Living, would irk and scare him even more. Melanie thought hard; how could she avoid the situation? How could she-
"Hello, Michael."
Before she could even begin to form some sort of plan, Louis had turned round and faced Michael. The whole world seemed to stop then as the two males looked each other in the eye. The cup slid from Michael's hand and spilled the juice all across the floor as Louis' eyes narrowed ever so slightly. With his mouth agape and eyes wide in shock, Michael raised a hand slowly and pointed at Louis.
"You," Michael said. "Oh, my God."
Louis cringed at the holy name before downing the rest of his drink and throwing the cup to the side. He skipped forward, placed his hands on Michael's shoulders and said, quite merrily, "Nope! Even better; me!"
