"We shouldn't have done it!"
I could tell everyone else agreed. Honestly I agreed as well. This whole thing was just a big mistake. I don't get scared easily. All my friends know that.
"Guys! Look what's done is done. The best thing we can do now is make it through the night." I tried to keep my voice from breaking.
My eyes were burning and my throat was extremely dry. "Keep it together." I scolded myself. The less my friends knew the better. It meant less yelling and crying. Which meant less scary things coming here.
*~*
"Hey have you heard about this?" My best friend smiled as she walked up to me.
"Hey Kay. What's this you were talking about?"
"I found this thing online apparently it's supposed to bring you really good luck. For like years." Kay smiled. "Maybe we could get Pat and Vanessa to join us."
"Join us? What is it some kind ot ritual?" I frowned.
"I heard ritual. I'm in. What are we doing?"
We laughed as Vanessa and Pat joined us. Vanessa was the one who spoke. She was always into rituals and stuff like that. I just thought it was a whole bunch of nonsense but I always indulged my friends. Pat was the one who just did things because she didn't want to be left out. Kay was the one that was usually behind the camera if we were documenting whatever we were doing.
"Will your brother join us?"
I admit I felt weird about there only being 4 of us, but Pat's concern wasn't because of our number. She had a crush on my brother and we all knew it. She didn't even know what we were doing yet.
"Kay what's the ritual?" I asked ignoring Pat's question.
"Okay so it's called the Dark Reflection Ritual. Basically you have to survive one night of terrible luck and then you'll have extremely good luck for a long time." Kay smiled.
I frowned at her. She liked doing this. She never explains the full story and then we get in trouble. I was hesitant but Vanessa was fully invested already. Pat, I could see, wasn't interested. I sighed and gave in.
"We can do it tonight at my house." I said. "Before you ask. No, Sam won't be there."
Pat looked defeated but she still agreed to join us. I went home after school and looked up the ritual myself. It seemed like a load of hogwash to me honestly but I had agreed. I decided to set up some cameras in case my friends decided to try play some tricks. Then I'd also be able to debunk this stupid superstition.
Every one showed up just after dark and we didn't waste any more time with the ritual. The mirror we used was a family heirloom. I thought it was the ugliest thing I'd ever seen so I was happy to get rid of it.
"Okay so this thing has been passed on for generations. I think it will do." I said before I turned to stare at my reflection.
None of my friends had wanted to do it so I said I would. What better way to disprove some stupid story. I followed the instructions to a T. Vanessa was the only one to join me in the ritual near the end. When she finished I burned the glass and smashed it.
After 2 hours nothing had happened. Kay was starting to get angsty and Pat just looked bored. The worst luck we'd had was a rain storm. I rolled my eyes kind of satisfied that nothing was happening.
"Hey I just remembered something. Vanessa did you breathe on the glass?" Pat frowned.
Vanessa smirked and shrugged. My stomach sunk. If Vanessa didn't breathe on the glass like I did then that meant I was the only one tied to the 'bad luck'. I scolded myself for buying into that nonsense.
"It doesn't matter if she did or didn't. The whole thing is a bunch of nonsense anyway." I rolled my eyes.
"I'm sorry. I forgot about that." Vanessa said.
"Bullshit." Kay and I said at the same time.
Vanessa always backed out at the last second. I figured that's what you get for being so superstitious. By now we had all gotten used to Vanessa flaking. I got up from the couch and started walking towards the kitchen.
"You guys want anything to drink?" I asked.
They all said yes and I left the room. I felt a shiver run down my spine as I walked away from my friends. I felt like I was being watched the whole time I walked to the kitchen. That's when the weirdness picked up.
As the hours ticked by weirder things started to happen. My friends started to freak out. There were moving shadows, random noises and weird things happening with the temperature. At first it was manageable and we joked about it because we all figured that one of us were behind everything.
Around midnight it took a turn for the worse. The first thing was the man standing outside my house. Or at least I thought it was a man. I could only make out his shadowy shape. Then there was the little girl laughing followed by the sound of someone running. And the worst of all... None of my friends nor I could get out of the room.
Sure you're probably thinking. "The door is probably closed." But the lounge has no door. It's like we are trapped in this see-through box. We can't get out through the windows and we can't get to my room which I basically across the hall.
My nose started bleeding out of the blue and that's when I started noticing changes with my body. I had a skull splitting headache. It felt like my head was going to explode. My eyes felt like they had onion and chilli poured into them. And gradually my throat started to feel like sandpaper. I didn't tell my friends because they were already freaked out.
The shadow figure had been moving closer to my house as the storm got worse. The little girl's laugh had turned into something more sinister. Every now and again there was a knock on the window and the little girl would laugh.
At one point one of my friends got dragged across the floor. The running sounds were coming from right next to us. And we had officially ran out of light sources. Sure we had our phones, but after Kay's flashlight had illuminated a mangled body walking towards us we decided to huddle up in the centre of the room.
Our strategy now was to pay as little attention as possible to the things happening around us. We hoped that whatever was happening would leave us be if we left it. I'd had enough though. My throat was pained and I could no longer swallow my saliva.
"I have to try and get some water." I managed to say my voice a little hoarse.
"No!" My friends all yelled at me.
I gave them a smile. The smile I usually have when I've played a good prank on someone. I thought it would ease their worries a bit. I took my phone from the pile and turned on my flash. The first thing I saw made my heart jump into my throat. "Ignore it. Ignore it. Ignore it." I told myself as I tried to keep my attention on my friends.
"Look I need water or I'm going to start choking. It's probably just my brother playing a trick on us." I said as I stood up and walked away.
It was a lie because my real brother was roughly 10, 000 miles away. My friends didn't need to know that the person standing behind them was an intruder. They didn't need to know that there was a person standing behind them at all.
I'm not a person that get's easily scared. I grew up in a world that was always scary so I had grown immune to feeling fear. Except I was extremely scared when Kay mentioned the Dark Reflection Ritual.
I'm a skeptical... person. Only because I know for a fact that most, if not all, creepy stories are fake. The Dark Reflection Ritual, however, is not fake. It was the reason I existed. I was scared because at any minute my "friends" could've realised who I was.
My throat was like sandpaper. My teeth were pushing through the skin. I could no longer swallow my saliva because I was drooling. My eyes were burning. They wanted to be opened so they could see. I had a skull splitting headache. My hunger was starting to drive me crazy.
The three souls sitting in the living room hadn't realised that I was able to leave my little prison cell. I could smell thier fear and it made my stomach growl.
