Unit 2 text analysis
- Intention of text : represent the writer’s attitude to the subject matter
- Text types:
+ narrative ( tường thuật): dynamic sequence of events with emphasis on verbs and phrasal verbs
+ Descriptive: static wt emphasis on liking verbs, adjectives, nouns or adjectival nouns
+ discussive: treatment of ideas wt emphasis on abtract nouns verbs of thought, mental activity.
+ dialogue: emphasis on colloquialisms
- Stylistic scales:
+ formality: officialese, official, forml, neutral, informal, colloquial, slang, taboo
+ generality or difficulty: simple, porpular, neutral, educated, technical, ..
+ emotional tone: intense, warm, factual, understatement
- The readership: Is a group of readers that the text is aimed at. The readership of the Sl text should be characterized. Then the readership of the translation -> decide how much attention to pay to the TL readers.
- Features of the readership:
+ the level of education
+ the class
+ age and sex (if marked)
Notes: there is a tendency to make the translation for educated, middle-class readership in an informal, colloquial style
-Types of readership: expert, educated layman (normal, biết những ko hiểu), uniformed (mù tịt).
-The setting of a text:
+ where would the text be publishesd in the TL?
+The TL equivalent of the SL periodical, newspaper, textbook, jounal?
+ the tite, the absence of sub-title and subheading, shorter paragraph and other features of TL house style
The assumption about the TL readership: educated, familiar with the topic/culture, the variety of language used.
