It had been a few days since Fallon had been in the hospital. His parents remained by his side, especially his mother. He was their only child and there was no way his mother was leaving him alone in the hospital. The only moments she left him alone while in the hospital was to get snacks or use the bathroom. She had enough experience with him being in the hospital and she knew better than to leave. Even when the doctors came in, she simply moved out of their way. Fallon was her baby, her one and only.
Now, Fallon's date had tried seeing him the first night, but he had been in surgery by the time she got to the hospital. She briefly met his parents while in the waiting room, but she felt too guilty to stay any longer than that, so she left. And she stayed away for a few more days while she mentally prepared herself for facing him again.
When she finally made her mind up to see him, it was after a long day at work. She did manage to stop at a nearby pharmacy to get him a stuffed animal and a get-well card. Despite all that, she felt like she could have done more for him. If they just hadn't gone to see that stupid movie...
Fallon was fast asleep when the girl went into his room. Surprisingly, his mother wasn't there. She was at home gathering some clothes for her Fallon to wear to come home the next day. The girl was glad for his mother's absence since she wasn't exactly ready to formally meet her.
Miss Mysterious set the stuffed animal and card where similar items had been placed before pulling up a chair closer to Fallon's hospital bed. She opened her mouth to whisper a prayer, but nothing came out. Tears pricked at her eyes just looking at him.
Fallon began to stir and awaken when his date neared him. He was a lighter sleeper in the hospital despite being drugged up on morphine to help him with the pain he was in. The morphine may or may not have made him a bit... loopy.
"You are not my mom," he groggily announced when his eyes landed on the girl. He checked her out as if it was the first time he was encountering her.
"I died and went to heaven. You're the angel welcoming me in. Was I a good boy?" A crooked grin was on his lips and it only grew wider when he saw the girl's expression.
"Aster. That's my name," she responded with glossy eyes. She barely knew the guy, but all she could think about was whether or not he was alive. That thought plagued her mind in the days leading up to this very day when she finally built up the courage to visit him. Seeing that he was alive and doing significantly better, she couldn't help but just about cry in relief. Some of the guilt was lifted off her shoulders.
"It's about time you told me your name," Fallon chuckled and reached a hand up to touch her face. He wasn't quite sure what he was doing, but he did it anyway. "And weren't we watching a movie or something?"
"That was a few days ago. I meant to visit you earlier but—"
Fallon placed a finger on her lips to silence her. This boldness was a result of the pain relievers. Fallon felt like he could take on the world, but he settled for the girl right in from of him. He carefully sat up and leaned over to kiss her forehead.
"Thank you for coming," he whispered to her. "I was starting to wonder if it was all a dream, but you're real."
Aster was stunned. The kiss on the forehead clearly caught her off-guard, but she tried to play it off. He had to have been on something.
"I'm very real. I promise. I'm so real," she whispered back to him. She briefly moved away to wipe the tears from her eyes. He didn't need to see her crying. They barely knew each other. She had to remind herself of that.
Fallon paused to observe her all over again. She was definitely something. If he had died and gone to heaven, he was sure she would be the angel that escorted him inside. Maybe even give him a tour.
"You're hot. You a model or something?" There was no reluctance in his voice or any noticeable regret. Fallon was saying whatever was on his mind no matter the cost. It was definitely the morphine.
A nervous laugh left Aster's lips at his comment. She tried to take it as a compliment, but she couldn't take him quite seriously with the goofy grin he was wearing. She was going to answer him if it wasn't for the sound of room door opening up.
"Oh! You're awake," a voice said and it sounded quite relieved. It was none other than his dear mother. She was happy her son was up, but the relief was replaced by surprise. Aster showing up was unexpected. If she was going to be honest, she thought Aster was a goner. Seeing as the young lady had returned, Fallon's mother began to think differently. She had a feeling things would be different from here on out.
