By the time the pair had made substantial progress on each other's paper, the coffee shop had cleared up quite a bit. It was just them, the remaining employees, and a few lingering college students getting the last bits of conversation in before the shop had to close.
"Well, Fallon, your paper was quite interesting to say the least," the girl said and saved the work so he didn't lose anything. She looked up at him with her bright eyes to see how he was doing with her paper. She had completely zoned in on his work once she put her headphones in to listen to music. The girl meant business.
Fallon's eyes met hers and then quickly focused on the screen of her laptop. How did she...?
"U-Um... thank you, really," he said and looked up at her once again. He had gone through and edited her paper. Well, what could have been edited anyway. Her grammar was almost flawless. He was sure she had to reconstruct most of his paper for it to make sense.
"Yours is great, too. Never thought Edgar Allen Poe would be so interesting. Knew he was insane, but not this... insane." Fallon busied himself with finishing the last of his coffee so he didn't say a thing stupid and ruin his chances. Of what? He was feeling bold and hopeful with the young lady before him.
The young lady laughed at his comment and lightly shrugged her shoulders. She started to put his laptop in her bag before responding to him.
"He is something else and happens to be one of my favorite writers, in all honesty." She stood up from the table and put some cash down before Fallon could say anything about it.
Fallon quirked a brow at her statement. She definitely did not seem like one for the dark pieces Poe was known to write. Then again, he learned not to judge a book by its cover.
"Interesting. So um... thank you, again. And sorry. I didn't catch your name," Fallon chuckled as he rose from his seat.
The girl smirked to herself before checking the time on her phone. She was in no rush, but...
"I should get going. It was nice meeting you, Fallon. Really hope you pass this final of yours," she said before leaving the table.
Fallon stood with his open and confusion all over his face. Was this chick serious? She just...
He shook his head and looked down at the laptop on the table. He saved the document and exited the writing application before swearing under his breath. This wasn't his laptop.
He swiftly zipped up his backpack and picked up the girl's computer. If his heart wasn't pounding before, it was in that moment. Fallon swore he never moved that fast in his life. Luckily, the girl was right outside and hadn't gone far. She was standing next to what he presumed to be her car.
"You have my laptop!" he called out while jogging up to her.
She stood there with a smirk on her face.
"I know. Wanted to see how long it took you to realize. Not gonna lie, you were faster than the others."
Others?! Fallon looked at her in disbelief, but still held her laptop out to her in hopes of a peaceful exchange of devices.
So the fun couldn't last any longer. She took his laptop out and handed it to him before taking her own.
"Thank you," Fallon grumbled and shoved the computer into his bag. He was going to guard it with his life. This girl was... intriguing. What were her motives?
The girl turned to leave, but she soon remembered they hadn't discussed something. She faced him one last time.
"We haven't discussed the subject of payment, Fallon."
"What payment and how do you know my name?"
"Me. You. Friday at 7:30. The old Cinema on Thatcher's."
She hadn't answered his pressing question, but he got an answer he was going to eventually ask her if she hadn't left so soon. Her boldness was starting to rub off on him.
Fallon took a step closer to her and stood a little taller. She was just a few inches shorter and he was really hoping to intimidate her by looking down at her.
"Deal. Now, answer my question," Fallon said with a smile tugging at his lips. "How do you know my name?"
"Well, Einstein, it was on your paper."
"Oh yeah? Well..." He racked his brain trying to remember if he saw her name on her paper.
"Didn't add mine as yet. Maybe next time." A teasing smile replaced the smirk on her lips.
Fallon's smile fell when she answered the question he was asking himself. This girl was freaking him out. He didn't know what was scarier though: her or him actually finding it appealing.
"Seeing as my work here is done. I should head home. Have a good night, Fallon~"
She got into her car and wasted no time driving off. She left Fallon dumbfounded and at a loss for words.
Yeah, going to the coffee shop was the best idea he came up with in a while.
