Aster and Fallon stole dates whenever they could over the course of the following month. Aster had to balance school, work, and church while Fallon was occupied with school and doctors' appointments. Still, nothing was official between them. Aster hoped he would make a move soon, but she had her doubts. They practically played phone tag with missed calls, late replies to texts, and the occasional voicemail. Fallon assumed she was busy, so he tried not to contact her a whole lot. Aster thought Fallon was losing interest, so she settled for waiting for him reach her, and she thought reaching out too much would come across as needy.

Aster was at Heather's apartment for their weekly girls group meeting with a few other young women in their church. They always gathered over food to discuss life and faith. No matter how crazy every other day of the week was, meeting with these girls made Aster's week significantly better.

"So, Aster. We've all been dying to know how things are going with that guy you mentioned?" Heather teased and nudged Aster with her elbow.

Aster closed her Bible and playfully rolled her eyes at Heather. Seriously? Right here and right now?

"Well... I think we have a date next week? You know, his injuries really limit what we can do. Also, thank you for praying for him. He told me the doctors say he's healing nicely." Aster found herself blushing just talking. What was that about?

"You should totally invite him to church! So we can see him," another girl chimed in with a laugh that caused everyone else to join in laughter. Even Aster laughed, but more out of nervousness and uncertainty.

"About that... I don't know if he's Christian. But he is really sweet and really cute, guys..." Aster knew looks weren't enough. She could see it on the faces of each of the girls around herself. They held each other accountable, including Aster. She was grateful for those who kept her grounded.

"Why don't you invite him to the Christmas Festival! We're all gonna be there and what a better way to introduce him to the faith than during Christmas?"

Aster tossed the idea around in head for a moment. A church date? It was always on her list of ideal dates, but she wanted it to be the guy doing the asking. And as if she needed a sign of confirmation, she received the notification of a text from Fallon. Aster's eyes fixate on the message, but she doesn't respond as yet.

"So?" Everyone was on the edge of their seats for her answer.

Aster looked up to observe the intense gaze of the friends around her. She could hear a pin drop because of how silent it got.

"Uh... I'll ask, BUT I can't promise that he will show up."

Asking was more than enough of an answer for everyone. Squeals and cheers erupt from the small living room space where they fellowshipped. How could Aster deny their request to ask when she wanted to ask him as well?

While Aster met with her girls group, Fallon had a close guy friend over. They were up in his room catching up over a few bottles of liquid courage and video games. Ever so often, Fallon would glance at his phone to see if Aster would respond. But why? That game of phone tag was still going on, so it wasn't like she would respond immediately. Still, he wished to hear from her. The days they didn't talk, he would listen to voicemails she left him. They weren't much more than messages telling him to call her back, but he missed that voice.

"Fallon!" his friend exclaimed and gave him a hearty shove. "Dude, seriously?! I needed help running in that base." His friend went back to pressing buttons on his controller to move his avatar around on the screen.

"Sorry," Fallon sighed and ran hand down his face. He needed to focus on the game. "Just..." Aster ran through his mind all day every day.

"It's that girl, isn't it? Just move on. What about that other chick in class who was checking you out? She's hot. Heard she's throwing a party this weekend."

"Evan, you I can't really party with a boot on my leg," Fallon chuckled just to give his friend an answer. He didn't want to go to that party, if he was to be honest. Couldn't have Aster finding out about his past—and present—wild side. He actually liked her and was not about to ruin things. He wanted to make things official.... soon.

"Whatever." Evan was too focused on the video game to coax Fallon any further. He reached for the bottle he had been drinking from only to find it was empty. Evan had no one else to blame but himself for finishing that drink. He paused the game and quickly left the room to get another case of drinks for them to indulge in. He wasn't worried about driving impaired when he could spend the night.

Fallon took these precious few moments alone to check his phone again. Aster did reply and Fallon's heart did a little jig in his chest.

Aster: Hey! I'll talk to you later. At a church thing.

Church. Fallon arched a brow when he read that word. Church. He hadn't stepped foot in one in years. His parents went more often than not, but never forced him to attend. As much as his mother wanted to pull him out of bed Sunday mornings, his father reasoned with her. Faith had to be his own. All they could do was pray he returned home.

So she was a church girl? The last church girl he was interested in rejected him at youth camp when he was in middle school. She claimed Jesus was her boyfriend and that she didn't need a boy. Ironically, Fallon found himself praying Aster wasn't like that.
