She loosened the scarf around her neck as she pulled on the door of the coffee shop. The warm air and atmosphere of the small shop was a sharp contrast to the crisp winter air. Snow hadn't fallen yet and she was surprised that was the case. It was just that cold.

What also surprised her was the amount of people gathered at tables throughout the coffee shop. Had all the college students come to write papers or stay clear of the cold? No. They were all mingling while clutching ceramic cups heated by the steaming beverages inside. And that was enough to tick off the brunette. Couldn't they have stayed in their dorms and talked?

Apparently not. There was limited seating and she was just about to leave when she spotted an empty seat near the front. She was hoping for a table all to herself, but there was a male sitting hunched over his laptop. He was staring intently at the screen as if he was waiting for something to happen. The white light illuminated his face and casted shadows where the light didn't quite reach. She paid him little attention since the empty seat was all she wanted.

"I hope no one else is sitting here," she said as she slid into the seat. She took her coat off and set it on the back of the wooden chair. It provided some cushioning for her back.

"Oh, no. No one is sitting there at all," the male answered in a slight annoyed tone. His eyes never left computer screen.

The girl paused her movements and arched a brow at him.

"Jeez... I'll leave, Grumpy Pants."

He finally looked up at her and his expression softened. He really needed another cup of coffee.

"You don't... have to. Sorry. Trying to write a paper. Really stressed out. Let's start over. Hi, you can sit there."

The girl cracked a small smile and shook her head at him. She pulled her hair back, since she meant business, and began to laugh at him.

"Hello and thanks. I'm also stressed and trying to write a paper. What's yours about?"

"Some history paper. What about you?"

"Literature. I just need two more paragraphs and I'm done. Since I snatched this seat and kinda disturbed you, how about I help you edit?"

He scratched his jaw and contemplated her offer. She had a nice face to look at and she seemed smart? Yes, please!

The guy turned his laptop around for her to take. He was a bit too excited and ended up cashing his cup of coffee to go crashing to the floor. The ceramic cup broke and coffee spilled in every direction possible from the point of impact.

The girl watched it all go down with her mouth ajar. A laugh bubbled up within her, but she quickly shut her mouth to prevent it from escaping.

"And I suppose I could buy you another cup of coffee," she sighed, as if it was a problem, and proceeded to rest her chin in the palm of her hand.

So maybe going to the coffee shop wasn't as bad as she thought it would be.
