Mr Eazi~Miss You Bad (ft Burna Boy)
Christine Onyinye Nwafor
The next two days seem to go by in a rush and before I know it, it's Thursday, the last official day of Trade Fair. I was thoroughly beat from all the work myself and Nedum had done these past few days, but thankfully, today's a free day for us, tasking ourselves with the job of buying instead of selling. I didn't dwell on a possible loss because I'm pretty sure most people had spent majority of their money the past three days instead so sales won't be as much today.
To commemorate the end of Trade Fair, Micheal has planned a mini get together for everyone. Well, not everyone according to Nedum. She said it'd only have a few people in attendance but I'd also heard that the party is being held in a public space so if someone wants to come, who'll stop them? I didn't vocalize that thought though.
Unlike the past three days when we had been driven to the Fair grounds by Remi, Nedum drove this time cause he had to leave school yesterday afternoon for a meeting, I think.
Ever since our kiss on Monday night, unlike how I'd though it would be afterwards, it really hadn't changed much. We were still friends, definitely. But we haven't spoken about that moment. I had almost deluded myself into thinking that it was a dream, a sweet dream that never happened. However, the feeling of his soft lips on mine, and the caress of his palm against my cheek was too real to have just been my imagination.
It kind of rubbed me the wrong way that he wanted to act as if it didn't happen. So I tapped into the energy he was giving; if that moment didn't mean shit to him, then it didn't mean shit to me either.
The drive was loud and amped up as we blasted Beyoncé's Mood 4 Eva over the speakers. Since it was just the both of us, we didn't hold back as we sang along.
"I'm so unbothered, I'm so unbothered
Y'all be so pressed while I'm raisin' daughters,
Sons of empires
Y'all make me chuckle, stay in your struggle
Crystal blue water, Piña colada-in, you stay Ramada inn
My baby father bloodline Rwanda
Why would you try me? Why would you bother?
I am Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter"
We both chanted the lyrics at the top of our voices, crazy smiles on our faces and a peculiar lightness in the air. Nedum took a longer route so it took a while for us to get there, and by the time we did, the song had ended.
I stepped out of the car, hot air immediately assaulting me as I thanked God that I didn't have any makeup on. It was only a few minutes after 5 pm but the sun hadn't dimmed one bit. I just hoped tonight won't be a hot one cause the heat in this Lagos can be dreadful sometimes.
The place was milling with people doing different things and going about their business as per usual. It felt different observing the crowd now that I wasn't actually one of those doing the selling, this brought a small smile to come to my face.
"Are we still going to the salon today?" I ask Nedum with a chuckle as I wear my shades to shield my eyes from the sun. We had initially planned to go get our hair and nails done and just relax today, but after all the pulling all-nighters and going through the early morning madness we had these past few days, the minute we slept last night we were goners. I literally woke up by 1 pm today, and Nedum, an hour later. There went our plans.
"Yes o. I've been biting my nails these past few days cause I don't have acrylic on it. I can't go to a party looking like this." Nedum complains, bringing out her hands for me to see what she's talking about.
"Yeah, you definitely need to get this fixed. Guy, you no chop? Ahn ahn." I ask her playfully. Her eyes widen and knowing what she wants to do, I spin on my heel and begin running away with her hot on my trail, the sound of our laughter blending into the background.
A few hours later, we ditch the Trade Fair and end up at the salon in Eko Atlantic Mall where Nedum frequents and there we are attended to by Ayo, who is dressed stylishly in a black and white pinstriped suit.
We get dolled up for over an hour before going to pay and there's this satisfaction, and dare I say, pride, that I feel at paying for my own stuff with my hard earned money. It's honestly unexplainable.
After that we go to our different hostels to get ready. I decide to get dressed in a pair of faded blue jeans and a black crop top for the party cause I don't want to overdress, not that I even have the energy for that. And soon, Nedum and I are on our way out of school to Atican Beach & Resort where the event is being held.
The drive there isn't a long one and after paying the entry fee, we are allowed in. The first thing we see is the hotel which is a tall, blue building, and further down is the beach area where the party is.
As we approach it, I can already see people standing inside one of the many pergola structures here, neon red, green, and yellow rotating lights illuminating the chalk white painted wood of the pergola.
I had expected a full on party but I'm actually surprised, and kinda impressed to see only a few people here, mostly familiar faces. As Nedum goes to greet everyone, ever the social butterfly, I subconsciously look around for Remi but he's no where to be found. I wonder if he's even coming at all before shaking that thought off. I'm not here for him, plus he couldn't care less about me, right?
Music is playing over the speakers, the low sound of Octavian's Poison audible. The vibe is chill as some people stand around in groups talking loudly to be heard over the music, while others dance. The breeze from the beach blows into the pergola causing goosebumps to trail my skin but I ignore it, after all it's my fault for forgetting to bring a cover up. I turn around only to see Samantha and Sade dancing on each other in a corner, laughing hysterically and looking like they'd already had way too alcohol much to drink.
And the party has barely started, I think to myself with a roll of my eyes.
Feeling like I need a drink, I head to the bar. I'm surprised at who I find seated on one of the brown stools in front of the bar island, nursing a glass of what looks like a margarita as she stares attentively at her phone.
"Hey, Gbemi." I greet, settling into the sit next to her.
She looks up at me, pushing her glasses up her nose. I notice that she was reading on her phone. "Oh hey, Chris." She replies with a shy smile.
"I'm surprised to see you here." I tell her, eyeing her petite form in a white t-shirt and black jeans.
"Yeah, well, my roommate dragged me here tonight. She said I need to loosen up and get my head out of my books." She says with a small embarrassed laugh but I find nothing worth being embarrassed at in that. Smart girls are the shit.
After giving her a nod, I try to get the bartender's attention from where he stands with some girls laughing loudly. The guy doesn't notice me and I'm tempted to jump over the aisle and make the drink my damn self after waving my hand for some time.
"Hey!" Gbemi shouts loudly, making me turn to her with wide eyes. The guy looks at us then. "My friends wants a drink!" She shouts again and with a nod, he excuses himself from the girls before heading our way.
With a barely restrained grin on my lips, I turn to face him.
"Sorry about that, ladies." The guy apologizes with a polite smile. "What can I get you?"
"A skinny margarita please. And a round of shots for my friend and I." I add, sending Gbemi a smirk as she looks at me in surprise. The guy leaves immediately, obviously in a hurry to get done with our drinks and get back to the girls.
"No, no. This is more than enough for me." She refuses, raising up her half filled glass for me to see.
Chuckling, I reply, "Yes, yes! Your roommate said you need to loosen up, right? Well, that's exactly what you'll do, miss." I tell her as I turn to watch the guy drop our drinks in front of us, giving him a thankful smile before he walks away.
Gbemi hesitantly picks up a small glass full of tequila, her skeptical eyes staring at me pleadingly as if begging me not to make her do this.
"Bottoms up!" I urge, suddenly hyped up as I chuck my own glass back and drink it. The burning liquid trails down the back of my throat, creating an urge for me to cough but instead I shake my head to force it down before emptying another glass.
When I'm done with both, I turn to Gbemi who is still reeling from the first. "This stuff is so disgusting." She chokes out, her face scrunched up in distaste.
"You get used to it eventually." I reassure before handing her the second glass. "Here you go."
With a sigh, she collects it and does a sign on her chest before throwing it back. Gbemi cringes badly at the taste before rushing back to her orange flavored beverage making me laugh as I turn to mine too.
"How do you feel?" I ask her over my glass.
She takes a deep breath before sending me a wide grin. "Good actually."
"Yeah?" She nods enthusiastically, her eyes already starting to glass over. Looks like we've got a lightweight here.
When Saweetie's Tap In begins playing over the speaker I have to dance, so, I drag her hand and lead her to the makeshift dance floor in the middle which is really just the small space where not many people are standing.
With some liquid courage cursing through my veins, I'm in the mood to let loose a bit and just have fun. We laugh stupidly as we dance on each other, moving our bodies gracelessly but still having fun.
For some reason in that moment, I find myself remembering for the thousandth time the feel of Remi's full lips against mine, his words from that night imprinted in my head. "What are you doing to me?" He had said.
At first the thought got me hot, and then it got me upset. What the fuck had he meant by that only to discard me like trash afterwards? I had thought we had a moment, like we connected on another level and genuinely understood each other? How stupid of me.
It was because of that anger that I didn't push the stranger who had held unto my waist out of the blue away when Hit Yo Dance by Rubi Rose and Yella Beezy came on. Instead I danced with him, careful enough to remain aware and not myself let loose completely. Gbemi was no longer dancing but I wasn't all too bothered about that as she looked to have found her way back to the bar.
Eventually, when the song switched, I was exhausted so I turned to leave but the guy held on to my hand roughly, causing me to whip my head to look at him. None other than Hassan stared back at me, his eyes tinted slightly as if he was high and horny at the same time. A bad combo.
I didn't like that look, neither did I like the stupid smirk he had on his face so I tried to tug my hand away from him forcefully but he had a tight grip on my wrist, not letting go.
"Oh, come on. I thought we were having fun, Chris." He says in a placating tone making me furrow my brows.
"If I count to five and you don't let go of my hand, I'll scream and then slap the fuck out of you." I snap before I start counting. I barely reach three before he lets go of my hand, probably detecting the seriousness in my tone.
"I will have you one day." Hassan promises, releasing a harsh breath.
"In your dreams." I tell him before storming off.
I can't believe this creep! I had a bad feeling about him from the get go, that he wasn't a trustworthy guy and this just confirmed it.
Annoyed and fiercely irritated, I kept walking, not knowing when I hit someone. I looked up to see Remi staring down at me with a confused expression on his face and before I even know what I was doing, I kiss my teeth loudly before walking away. I wasn't in the mood for him and thankfully he didn't stop me.
I begin to make my way to where someone directed me is the restroom in the main hotel and by the time I locate it, I'm more than ready to leave and go back to my hostel. However, when I come out of the toilet after washing my face and handling my hygiene, I find a handful of people coming into the building.
I'm confused as I look around and spot Nedum who excitedly grabs my hand and pulls me with her up the stairs to a room on the second floor of the hotel.
Letting out a breath, I follow her. She has a giddy smile on her face and a blunt in her hand. When she offers it to me, I shake my head. We all enter the room which is quite big and is spacious enough for about fifteen people, although we are twenty. Some people settle on the cold tiles, but Nedum and I seat on one of the few couches.
"We're playing truth or dare." Nedum whispers to me as I watch a guy come to the middle of the circle and drop an empty glass bottle of sprite on the floor carefully.
"Okay y'all!." The guy begins to speak, causing the chatter to quiet down as everyone turns to him. "Before we begin, some ground rules. So, in this game, there are only five truths per round. A new round begins when a person gets dared and he or she can't do it and has to leave the game. I suggested that the person's punishment be to skinny dip in the beach-" He gets cut off by people cheering. "But! But, my bro, Micheal, suggested that the person just leave instead before somebody will go in the water and get carried away." He adds and people chant 'boo' even though the suggestion was just to guarantee everyone's safety.
I laugh at that as I thank my stars that that was not the punishment. Micheal raises his middle fingers and rotates his hands at everyone.
"Anyway, with that being said, let's get this game started! Please, I take God beg una, let this not be a boring game!" The guy warns, earning some laughs as he goes to take his seat.
In a matter of minutes, the game begins and I'm already regretting coming to sit here as I dread my turn. The dares are ridiculous. Five minutes in, I've seen a guy get a lap dance and ten minutes in, I've seen someone's breasts.
The game is fun though, and for the most part, funny. Instead of paying attention to those playing the game, I look around at everyone. I find Remi seated on Micheal's left and as if feeling my gaze he lifts his head and looks straight at me.
With a gulp, I look away and right at Regina who is seated in between Sade and Samantha, the pair giggling as usual. Hassan is in a corner and I quickly divert my attention back to the game before he catches me looking.
The bottle is spun and the head lands on Regina who squeals when her name is called, whether it's in excitement or not, I can't tell.
"Truth." She says. Some people laugh at that. I would have thought with the way she's always forming bad bitch, she would've picked dare, I think to myself with a mental roll of my eyes.
The girl who the head of the bottle landed on chuckles before looking around the room and contemplating her question. "Would you have sex with...Hassan?" She asks and Regina frowns deeply at that.
"Hell no!" She spits out as if disgusted by the thought alone. People laugh at that, embarrassed for Hassan but he just smirks knowingly, a toothpick in his mouth as if what Regina just said was a joke to him.
As if he has actually had sex with her? Shaking my head, I dismiss that thought.
After a few more turns, the tail of the bottle lands on me and the head, on Micheal who sends me a devious smirk.
"Truth or Dare, Chris?" He asks.
As everyone's attention turns to me, I find myself on the brink of panicking. Truth or Dare? Truth or Dare? Fuck, why is this suddenly so hard to pick.
"Dare." I blurt out, cringing after the word escapes my mouth.
With that smirk still present on his face, Micheal rubs his hands together before sparing Remi a glance and then turning back to me. "I dare you to..."
