Monday morning came quicker than expected. I was dressed in a black suit and had my hair gelled back professionally.
Damn, I looked like a billionaire.
I grabbed the bag that contained my laptop and made my way outside. Once I had my apartment locked, I hailed a cab and headed for the PL Inc in a bundle of nerves. I had been in worse conditions in war but this was a different kind of dread. I was afraid that anyone who looked at me would see through my lies and that would be the end of me.
"Are you okay sir?" The driver asked with concern etched on his old face.
Was I that obvious?
"Yes, it's just my first day at work that's why." I explained to him and he relaxed a bit. What had he expected to hear?
"Alright then. People say that the CEO there is so strict, I would be nervous too. You're going to PL Inc. right?" The driver asked again.
"Yeah. I'm sure I'll do just fine."
We reached the building way too soon and I paid the driver with a little tip. Its what I could manage.
Turning around to face the building, I was intimidated by its size. Even guns and grenades did not intimidate me this much. I collected myself together then made my way to the entrance. I walked up to the receptionist and asked her for further directions.
"Excuse me Miss, I am Mas...Mr. Collins Jordan and I am reporting for the HR department, could you direct me on where to go?" I asked her and held my breath due to my slip up. But the woman just kept checking me out. She dragged her eyes from my face to the muscles which were rippling out of my shirt.
I cleared my throat.
"Miss, did you hear what I said?" That brought her attention back to me and she blushed profusely.
"Take the elevator to the fifteenth floor room number G7, someone would be waiting for you there. Its Mr Jordan right?" The woman easily recollected herself and got back to work.
"Yes." I simply replied.
"Alright welcome to the PL Inc. Mr Jordan." She smiled cheerily and spared me a wink.
Was that even professional? I wondered to myself.
When the elevator came to a halt on the fifteenth floor, I came out and looked around like a lost puppy. To the furthest west, I spotted G5 and I knew G7 couldn't be that far away so I made my way towards. I was so engrossed in finding G7 that I knocked into someone who went down with a yelp.
Hurriedly, I helped her up and she looked at me apologetically.
"Sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going." Her cheeks were tainted a little bit, probably from embarrassment. She was a stunning short woman, not very short, with warm chocolate eyes. As she straightened her pencil skirt from the creases caused by the fall, her eyes met mine and a look of recognition passed in them.
"You must be Mr Jordan," she said studying my features with a look I couldn't quite decipher.
"Yes, Ma'am." I shook her hand and recognized her voice almost immediately. She was the woman who had called me last Friday.
"Good, I see you're early. Fifteen minutes early to be exact." She looked quite impressed.
"You told me time is a key factor in the PL Inc." I reminded her.
"Indeed, my name is Esme Williams, I will be your supervisor and superior. You will be answering to me. Come, let me show you to your office." She led me to the opposite direction of where I had been going. The entire floor was neatly polished and as she led me to the office, I gaped at its size.
G7 was boldly bound by the door and as she opened the door, the interior decor amazed. At the corner of the room was a huge brown table with a leather chair by it. Overlooking it were two other comfortable leather chairs for visitors. The room was painted a baby blue colour, something I wasn't expecting to find in an office. By the table was a brand new macbook and a folder rack plus other important office stuff.
"I will leave you to put your staff down before I give you a tour of the place."
By the time I got back to the office, my feet were killing me. The place was grand and it screamed money. Esme showed me every necessary place I needed to know and finished with the break room and the cafe in the floor. I realized that there was a cafe in almost every floor and it wasn't your average cafe, it looked way expensive.
I got settled on my desk and started going through my tasks of the day. If I was going to fit in here, I might as well start acting the part. From what I had gathered, Layla took over the company two weeks back and everyone was afraid of her. They said she didn't overlook tardiness and laziness in her company. She indeed kept everyone on their toes.
When it was finally lunch time, Esme and I went to the cafe and everyone else was looking at me like I had new guy typed on my forehead.
Regardless, I made a few friends. Anke, who worked on the twentieth floor where Layla's office was and she kept complaining how hard to please her boss was. I also met Matt who was Layla's personal assistant and we hit it off almost immediately.
"So why are you guys having lunch on the fifteenth floor. I heard there are cafes almost in every floor." I asked Matt who had his mouth full of lasagna.
"Well, this floor has the best chef. Even Miss Pierce likes to come here when she isn't busy that is. She hired him herself, I swear she has the best taste." He answers his mouth full of food. That earned him a slap on the head by Esme.
"What do you mean when she isn't busy?" I probed.
"Why are you so intrigued by her?" Matt asked causing me to shift uncomfortably.
"Same reason all men are in this company. They want a piece of her." Anke answered ." Too bad for the male population, she already has a boyfriend. " Anke said matter of factly.
She had no idea.
I found Radina attractive but she wasn't the kind of girl I usually went for. I knew she would pass as a model beauty wise and she was supper smart but I didn't like a woman who could intimidate me. She was the opposite of everything I wanted in a woman. Besides I wasn't a fan of caramel skin that much, not to be racist or anything.
"And there she comes. Finally decided to grace us with her presence." Anke said her eyes glued to the front.
When I fixed my gaze on her, I swear she could have passed for an angel. Her face was radiating a smile as she was on the phone with someone. Her aura oozed with authority and I shivered at just her sight. She looked sharp in her black pants and white blouse paired with a black blazer. She resembled those FBI agents who were assigned to look after the president in special events.
As she passed by our table, she acknowledged Esme and Matt.
"Esme, Mathew and Ankara was it?" Her voice was eerily soft but stern. Indeed still waters run deep.
"Anke Ma'am, its Anke." She replied but Layla was already gone. Anke huffed angrily and glared at Layla's back. She hadn't even acknowledged me.
Someone cleared her throat and I concentrated back on my food. I felt someone's gaze probing me and when I raised my head Esme met my gaze with a look of disapproval.
"What?" I innocently asked.
"You were staring." She stated curtly.
"I was just surprised that's all. I mean, what kind of a woman has that ego. She looks full of herself to me I think." It was Matt's time to clear his throat.
"What?" I asked him but he only turned his head behind me.
When I turned to see what he was referring to, Layla was right behind me with a raised brow.
What a great first day!
