Chapter One (Un)
"pack your stuff and get the hell out! David" Martha was screaming at the top of her voice, shouting down the walls of her home or what used to be a home, "Martha you have to calm down and let me explain, it wasn't the way you think it is..." David was saying "calm down?!, I should calm down?!, oh no David you do not get to fucking ask me to calm down, you lying scumbag of a man, you cheating bastard, after what? 6 years of being married, you throw it all away for some cheap skank! I hate you David, I hate this marriage, your kids hate you, now get your stuff and get the fuck out of our lives!" Martha couldn't control her temper, shouting and crying hysterically, David scampered around the house gathering the things he could and trying to explain himself, at the same trying to dodge Martha's wrath, her anger was slipping, she was getting worse and the sound of broken glass against the wall confirmed David's thought, she was so mad, she could kill him at the point.
Martha started breaking things, glass pictures, vases, china wares, she even broke the TV, "Martha!!" David yelled as she shattered their centre table, his wife had never thrown a fit this dangerous before, he'd been trying to get a reaction out of her for the past 1 year, who knew it would take cheating on her to get her spirits up, he wondered "If you don't move your sorry ass out of this building right now David Chanria, I swear to god I'll kill you here in front of your kids" Martha threatened "No, not the girls Martha, I'm leaving, don't hurt the kids, I'll go" David responded frantically as he stopped trying to prolong his eviction and picked up his car keys among the broken shards of glass, it was clear to him that his marriage has ended, months ago even, there was really nothing left to fight for, there was really nothing or no one rather left to fight for, it was simply over, walking away from all of it with an over night bag, he headed for the door while Martha had slid to the floor in anguish, her cries evolving to something even more painful and guttural than it was every minute, taking one look at his now destroyed living room and even more destroyed wife, David said "Martha I'm sorry" but then heartlessly added "you'll be hearing from my lawyers", Martha threw a piece of glass from right next to her at the door hoping to hit David, the glass barely missed his face as he dodged and hurried out, she didn't even mind her now bloodied hand and just sat there drowning in her tears, 'her life couldn't get any worse' she thought until she remembered her children, they probably witnessed everything, in shameful panic, she scrambled up to her feet, wiping her bloodied hands on her black shirt, forcefully drying her face and trying to put her hair back in place, she went to look for her daughters.

"why is mummy being so mean?...why won't they stop?" Deborah sobbed into her twin's chest as Dorothy held her close "sssshh, don't talk, you don't want mummy to find us" Dora comforted and warned "we are gonna be alwyght" she told her younger sister, the girls were only 5 minutes apart in age, yes they were twins, identical wins, exactly the same and indistinguishable except you can always notice how Deborah is the chubby one, an absolute mummy's pet but it was never an issue as Martha treated both her daughters the same with so much love.
Debby's sobs invoked Dora's and the two girls stayed under the staircase crying and hoping their parents would stop, it sounded like a battle out there; their sobs slowly died out as they heard their father leave and it was just them and their mother, still scared to come out from hiding the girls remained cooped up to each other holding on for their dear lives. "Debby honey!, Dorothy baby!" a panicking Martha like the injured mama-bear called for her girls, the girls still terrified refused to answer "sweet hearts please where are you? please come to mummy" Martha called, she was almost loosing her composure and crying again "Dora honey please come with your sister, mummy's sorry and mummy's going to explain everything and apologise, I'm so sorry for scaring you my babies, please come to mummy" she called out to the girls again, this time letting tears fall and sobbing "Debby! Dora! Debby! Dora!" Martha kept calling for the girls as she entered room after room checking for them, even the bathrooms but she couldn't find them, she even had to look under the beds, she was sobbing and headed towards the kitchen to check, different things running though her mind, what if the girls ran away in fear through the kitchen back door, what if her babies were out there and in danger, what kind of mother did that make her, loosing her husband and now loosing her two children, her heart literally choked with sadness and her cries levelled up, walking down the stairs, past it to the kitchen, she heard Debby call "mummy?, don't cry mummy" the five year old said "oh God, Debby baby, where were you?" Martha questioned, relief flooding through her body as she hugged her child and asked "where's Dorothy?" at that moment Dorothy quietly walked out from under the stairs, Martha gasped and rushed to her second child hugging her "Dorothy honey, mummy is so sorry" she said crying out of relief into the girl's hair, she hugged both girls to her body kneeling and saying how sorry she was for scaring them into hiding, that night was the longest night for Martha. The girls kept asking questions, looking for daddy, wondering why the living room looked like they were robbed, asking if mummy hurt daddy or if daddy hurt mummy, the curiosity and inquisitiveness almost driving her crazy, she badly wanted to snap at them but how could she. The girls weren't old enough to be sensitive of the situation and so she endured till she finally put them to bed.
It didn't take long for Martha to hear from David's lawyers, the family lawyers were always his first, she figured as she got papers delivered to her, this was only four days after she chased David out of the house, the girls kept asking for their daddy, Dorothy wouldn't let it go, she was a daddy's girl, she'd thrown a tantrum earlier that day and as if David knew he sent the divorce papers that same day, fully accepting the fact that their marriage was over, Martha had resolved to signing the papers and letting go; what she didn't expect though was how the case was going to end.
This week was the worst for Martha and having to put her babies through it killed her, she wanted to walk away from the marriage with both girls but David and his lawyers would have none of it. In the end, the terms were not what she wanted; David got Dorothy and she got Deborah, each parent solely responsible for the welfare of the daughter they went along with meaning no need for child support because apparently it was an even split. Only in a situation where one parent dies would the other parent assume responsibility of the other child as well as control of whatever is left to that child if the child is not up to 20years and in college; Martha didn't want this but she couldn't keep fighting in court, the case had dragged in court or a month now and so it was decided.
They were divorced and the girls would split up in a week, grudgingly agreeing to the terms, she knew there no way she could stay back at the neighbourhood they lived, the entire neighbourhood knew of her nasty break up considering she and David were not so subtle, neighbours kept giving her weird looks, all knowing eyes were always on her and the house belonged to David after all, too many memories there, she decided to move away to the country side. Martha on her own was a wealthy woman, coming from an even wealthier family, she inherited a shitload of money from her grandma and was even yet to inherit money from her parents and she had her company running fine, so relocating wasn't a big deal, her only regret was having to separate the twins and leaving Dorothy behind.
Martha never got over the screeching cries of the girls the day she was leaving with Deborah. The girls had always been inseparable but that day when Martha had her things moved out, all packed, it was clear to the girls that mummy was moving and when she took only one of them, they really didn't understand why but that didn't stop them from wailing profusely. It broke her heart to watch them cry and Debby wouldn't stop, not even after a whole month of living away from her sister did the girl quit and so Martha handled the situation how she thought best; she gave Deborah everything she needed and wanted and that included lots of treats, she sheltered and pampered her till Debby forgot her problems while Martha downed alcohol everyday in large volumes to get over her own heartache.
Martha became a drunken mess over the years but not once did she let Debby realise what she had turned into, she had to reserve the perfect image for her perfect and precious baby and that's how she lived for the next eleven years and a couple of months forcing herself to forget her other child Dorothy.
