Make Me Lose Control
Season 2 Episode 3
Derek and Margo enter the elevator in a comfortable silence. Right before the doors close the chief slides in wearing a very noticeable fedora on his head.
"Nice hat." Derek chuckles.
"Shut up." Both Margo and Richard speak at the same time.
"What are you doing here?" Derek questions the man.
Ah, yes. Margo had been told after the fact that the chief had surgery and for plenty of hours later she had been overwhelming the man with all of her mother hen ways.
"I'm going back to work."
Derek shakes his head. "You're not cleared for surgery."
Said man grunts. "Leave me alone. I've been sitting home for a week watching Oprah giving away things on TV. Oprah, Derek! ... You clear me now or I'll hurt you. Margo tell him to clear me!"
"Sorry, Richard. I'm not a brain surgeon. I wouldn't want you to be cleared negligently." She worries.
"If you want me to clear you so soon, maybe you should've thought about that before you gave chief to Burke and invited Satan to Seattle." Derek taunts, loving the authority he held right now.
The Elevator opens and Addison enters. Margo lowly sighs and keeps her eyes on the ground. "Good morning. Richard, like the hat."
"Satan speaks." Derek groans.
"Actually I prefer to be called ruler of all that is evil. But I will answer to Satan." She snarks to the man.
Derek turns to Richard furiously. "What is she still doing here?"
"I asked her to stay. We have a pediatric surgery attending on maternity leave."
Now it's Margo's turn to be furious. "That is my department. I would have notified you if I thought we needed extra help."
"You're also the co-head of Cardio Margo. It could never hurt to have some extra help." He looks genuinely apologetic.
"Actually I could use you on a consult. Will you ah meet me up there Derek?" Addison questions hopefully.
"Fine." Said man dismisses. "I'm not clearing you for surgery."
"Fine, I can catch up on my paperwork." Richard glares and leaves the elevator knowing he had just lost the battle.
"How are you doing Derek?" Margo worriedly questions once the doors close. "We haven't had the chance to actually talk since Addisons arrival."
"Merediths not speaking to me and Addison won't stop speaking to me." He sighs, tiredly rubbing his eyes.
Margo rubs a hand on his back in hope of comforting him. "Don't worry too much, everything will blow over eventually."
"My girlfriend and my wife. Who would've thought?"
"He would've absolutely made fun of you in this moment." Margo giggles, covering her mouth as he glares at her.
•
Margo stands in her patient, Mr. Gaston's room along with Bailey and her interns.
"Mr. Gaston is scheduled for resection non-small cell carcinoma today. He did well overnight, has remained afebrile. He's had a dose of ceftriaxone this morning. He's pre-op labs are unremarkable. His chest x-rays, um, are unchanged from the previous." Cristina presents to the room.
"I own a couple of dry-cleaning stores. Never believed what they said about inhaling the chemicals, but... " the man trails off.
"We're going to do everything we can for you, Mr. Gaston. We have a wonderful group of medical experts here dedicated to your healing and recovery." Margo comforts with a warm smile before turning to Cristina who looked mildly disgusted with her sunshine attitude. "Did Oncology see him yet?"
"Uh, they're waiting for the surgical path." She responds.
"Thank you Dr. Yang." Margo brightly smiles, disgusting the intern.
•
Margo had already started the operation by the time Cristina enters the OR, one of the nurses handing her a gown. Margo raises a curious brow at the intern. "You're late, Yang. From what I've heard you're one of the biggest Cardio prospects."
"I apologize." She tonelessly replies. Margo slightly narrows her eyes but doesn't comment on it.
"Just starting to dissect around Mr. Gaston's tumor." Margo updates her. "The tumor has infiltrated the pericardium."
As she looks up to Cristina again she looks exhausted and dazed. "Cristina, is everything alright?"
Cristina clears her throat. Yes. Sorry."
"There is an arrhythmia when I press down on the tumor. That is a sign of what, Yang?" Margo questions.
"Um ... ... ah it's a sign of, it's a ... it's a sign that the uh tumor has infiltrated the pericardium." The woman stammers.
"What are the possibilities?" She questions again.
"In all...I'm sorry. I ..." Her response becomes mute.
"It could be causing a tear in the aortic muscle of the heart." Margo answers for her. As she looks up from the open body in front of her, her brows furrow. Cristina almost looks like she's swaying side to side and then collapses on the floor. Margo's eyes widen in panic knowing she couldn't step away from this surgery. "Cristina! Cristina can you hear me?"
Receiving no response and all the other medical personnel looking around with wide eyes Margo yells to the group. "Someone help her! Get a gurney in here!"
Bailey and one of her blonde interns rush into the room and help her onto the gurney along with putting an oxygen mask over her face. "We got it, Dr. Shepherd, we got it!" Bailey assures the attending that looked extremely worried.
"Please keep me updated on her Miranda." Margo requests. "I'll be there as soon as I close up."
•
Margo steps into Cristina's hospital room with her charts in hand seeing Bailey sitting besides the woman who had just woken up from surgery a few minutes prior.
"You had an extra uterine pregnancy. Your left fallopian tube burst. Dr. Shepherd ... she did everything she could but there was too much damage. She couldn't save the tube." She overhears the woman telling the intern.
Her heart breaks as she noticed the vacant look in her eyes.
"I'm sorry Mrs. Shepherd, the doctor has confirmed you're having a miscarriage."
"I'm so sorry Cristina." Margo apologizes, patting her foot on the end of the hospital bed before leaving.
•
"Aurora is almost ready, she's just finishing up her dinner." She tell him over the phone, though she doesn't sound as naturally enthusiastic as usual.
"Is something wrong, Angel?" Mark immediately questions sensing it in her tone.
Margo lowly sighs, leaning her back against the counter. "An intern at the hospital had miscarried, it just brought back some memories of my own experience before Aurora."
Mark is silent for a moment, memories going through his head as well. "I'm sorry, Angel. I know it's hard. On the bright side we have a very sassy pumpkin now and you're one of the strongest woman I know."
Margo cries into the hospital pillow laying in a fetal position as Mark rushes into the room.
"Oh, Angel." He swears his heart breaks in two. He rushes to the bed and brushes the hair out of her face. "I'm so sorry."
"Everything was okay yesterday." She sniffles. "I know I'm a pediatrician and logically I know that sometimes these things can just happen but I can't wrap my brain behind the fact that just yesterday my baby was okay."
"I know, I know." He whispers, grabbing a hold of her hand. "You're going to be okay, Margo. You're one of the strongest woman I know."
They sit there in comfortable silence for over an hour before another set of footsteps run into the room. By this time Margo has already cried herself into a deep sleep.
"Margo." The man sadly sighs as he takes in the sight of her. His face however drops slightly at the sight of Mark holding her hand looking at her tenderly.
Mark notices his presence and clears his throat, gently resting the woman's hand on the bed and standing up. "I guess I'll go now."
As he walks past the other man grabs his arm. "Thank you... for being here for her."
Mark nods his head and steps forward to leave but the man wasn't done. "I know, Mark."
"Know what?" He looks towards one of his best friends in confusion. The other man looks toward the ground in slight hurt. "I know you love her."
"I-" Mark stutters, shocked and unsure of what to say. "I have no clue what you mean."
"She's my wife, Mark." The other man says with slight anger. "I'm asking you to please, let it go for the sake of our friendship. For your friendship with her. She cannot lose anyone else."
Mark stands there frozen as the man passes him to get to his wife. Mark glances back toward the bed to see his friend kissing the woman on the head with grief and love shining bright in his eyes.
"We got lucky with this one, didn't we?" Margo smiles as she stares at Aurora smearing her mashed potato's all over the plate. "She's lucky to have you Mark."
"Always."
