As We Know It
Season 2 Episode 17
Dylan is now slowly strapping a flak jacket up to Meredith. He is wearing one himself. Cristina is already wearing a flak jacket and still squeezing the ambu bag. "You realize how stupid that was." The man questions Meredith."
"It was Mer. Incredibly stupid!" Cristina whisper-shouts.
Meredith turns to Cristina. "Ok you know when you don't need to be made fun of? Like when you've got your hand inside a body that's got a bomb in it and a stranger is Velcro-ing a flak jacket to your boobs."
"Ok." Cristina backs off but Margo can't help the small smile coming onto her face thinking of who those two remind her of.
"Just give it to me, Mark!" Derek glares as he holds his hands out.
Mark takes a step back and pulls the bundle closer to his chest. "I had it first Derek."
"That's my daughter! She is not an it!" Margo growls at the two as her husband laughs from next to her.
"It's my god daughter and niece, hand her over Mark." Derek attempts to grab the new born from his arms but Mark is having none of it.
"I have a literal baby that might actually break if you try yanking her from my arms again, Derek!" Mark barks.
Margo takes a deep breath realizing now wasn't the time for reminiscing. "Time for you to go, Cristina."
"No, I'm staying."
"There's nothing more you can do here. We've got it covered. Cristina, this is not another clueless surgery. You can not be in here." Margo urges. The woman looks toward Meredith who nods her head. Cristina looks toward the attending and back toward the body again before smushing her in a hug.
Everyone's eyes in the OR widen. "Um, Dr. Yang?"
"Don't die okay? I can't believe you've been in front of my eyes all this time and I'm just now realizing it when you're going to die." The woman whispers, sounding like she's day dreaming.
Dylan snorts and Margo awkwardly pats her back. "Thanks for the confidence, Yang. Now get out."
Meredith looks toward Dylan: "So you have a plan right? You have a way to get me out of this right?"
Dylan stares at her in contemplation. I'm attempt to distract herself Meredith looks to Margo. "Is this the strangest thing that's ever happened in your OR?"
Now it's Margo's turn to snort. "Nothing that could top this."
"Good, cause I'm very competitive." She breathlessly laughs.
"All the best surgeons are, Grey. I have a feeling you'll be one of the best." Margo winks.
Another member of the bomb squad comes into the room and whispers something in Dylan's ear before leaving. "The main oxygen line runs directly under this room." Dylan informs Margo.
"I need one of you to tell me what this means exactly. Because I think I know what it means. But I tend to be glass half-empty these days so I won't trust what I think it means. Because what I think it means if the bomb were to explode over the oxygen line the whole hospital could blow up. ... And that's just crazy right?" Meredith rants, looking toward one of the two to tell her she's wrong.
"Meredith, all it means ... is that we have to move." Dylan tries to calm her down but now Margo looks at him like he's crazy.
"Move?" Margo harshly whispers. "My brothers OR is directly next door and this thing could blow him to bits if we move."
Dylan's eyes soften. "That's right. But We have to move. Now because I don't want to spend another second in this room. It's better for everyone in the hospital."
Margo holds the bridge of her nose trying not to completely flip out.
"Wait. I can't wiggle my fingers because we can't shift the bomb. And now you want to roll out the entire gurney?" Meredith looks at him like he's crazy.
"Well that's our safest, safest option."
Margo takes another deep breath and puts on an overly enthusiastic smile. "So we move. Not a problem. We can do this. You handling this Grey?"
"I'm handling this." Meredith sighs.
They begin slowly moving the gurney with the assistance of the bomb squad, Margo refusing to leave Merediths side.
"You're both doing great." Dylan compliments.
"Let's go over it again." Meredith suggests and Margo nods her hid in agreement.
"The device is shaped like a rocket. About 8 inches long. We're going to have everything ready. Dr. Shepherds team is going to be in place. My team is going to be in place. And I'm going to ask you to take the hand that you have in Mr. Carlson, wrap it around the device and pull it out. Level. Pull it out while keeping it level." He lowly responds.
"You know I don't like you very much." Meredith tells the bomb squad leader. Margo giggles.
"I don't like you either." Dylan shrugs.
"Dr. Shepherd, are you really Margo St. Claire?" Meredith questions as she tries to distract herself.
Margo sighs as she feels two pair of eyes drilling into the side of her head. "Yes."
"You know I swear Cristina has a poster of you somewhere in her apartment." Meredith smirks.
Margo grimaces. "I'll pretend you never told me that." Her face whitens as they suddenly hit a metal bar across the floor and everyone tenses.
"All right everybody. Let's keep placing one foot in front of the other. Nice and slow. Alright Meredith we're almost there." Dylan assures the group.
OR where the gurney carrying James is now in place. Burke is there with his team ready to take over for Margo as is Dylan.
"We're ready when you are." Burke kindly tells the group as he can see how visibly shaken they all are. "I'm going to extend the wound. When I cut the bleeding is going to intensify. If we're going to save Mr. Carlson you have to pull the bomb out immediately."
"But remember remove it while keeping it level as possible. Nice and easy. No quick movements. Level." Dylan tells the intern.
The rest is a blur to Margo. It felt like an out of body experience. She remembers Dylan's bright green eyes saying something to her as he leaves the room with the bomb in hand. Then she remembers Meredith leaving the room and feeling and hearing the bomb go off.

Derek sees the woman slowly exiting the hospital where the rest of the staff awaits. He breaks into a sprint and picks her off of the ground in a tight hug. "Margo, Margo, thank god!"
Margo's eyes finally fill with tears and she nods her head hugging him right back. She notices him scanning behind her and whispers so lowly that the red head beside them couldn't hear. "Merediths okay."
The man becomes visibly less tense but doesn't let go of her. "I have something to show you."
Margo pulls away and rubs her temples. "Right now? Derek, I'm sorry can it wait. Right now I just need to see my daughter and sleep for a few days."
"It can't wait." He insists leaving no room for argument.
•
"Derek." Margo groans. "If I'm being completely honest I don't trust you guiding me blind folded."
Derek huffs out a laugh. "Ouch. We're just about there. A.. few.. more... steps.. and... we're here."
He slowly takes the blindfold off and Margo looks around in confusion noticing they're surrounded by grave stones. "Derek.."
"Look down." He softly says.
Margo's eyes trail down and her mouth falls open and tears automatically well in her eyes. "Oh.."
William James Shepherd
Loving Father, Son, Husband, Brother, and Friend
"H-how?" Margo chokes out as she falls to her knees placing her palm on the grave stone.
"His ashes... I know you gave them to our mom but we both knew you deserved something here after being so willing to move all the way here to be there for me." Derek whispers. "Away from everything you two knew."
Margo places a kiss on the top of the stone and lays her forehead against it as she begins to sob. Sob because today Bailey almost lost her husband in nearly the same way she had, sob because she had almost gotten blown up by a bomb, sob because Dylan William Young felt like her husbands way of saying hi before Dylan got blown up, sob because she had now been with out William for three whole years.
Derek takes a seat beside her and rests his hand on top of her own as a few tears of his own fall in grief of his fraternal twin brother. The man who had been by his side through nearly everything.
As they lean on each other they can only be glad that William James Shepherd gave them their now bond before passing. Together they could get through anything and they knew that eventually, they'd be okay.
