Prince

"You stole a baby?" I start as soon as we make it through the door.

Grant takes his leather jacket off, momentarily distracting me. "It's been killing you not to say anything hasn't it?"

"Grant." I warn him.

"I know it doesn't sound great, but I had to Rinnie."

I look at him in disbelief. "You had to? What on earth makes you have to steal someone's child?"

"He named him too." Grayson walks past me and sits on the couch.

Grant's eyes send daggers towards his friend. "I'm not sure how this involves you."

Grayson chuckles. "Dude, you literally got me arrested."

"You were fine, don't be dramatic."

I glare at them. "I think you guys are missing the point."

Grant takes my hand and leads me to the couch. I sit down slowly.

"I got lost looking for the bathroom, ended up outside and I heard a baby crying down this sketchy back alley. I followed the noise and saw a drug deal going down. I physically saw the young man and woman grab the drugs and hand over Prince. I grabbed him while the drug dealer was talking to his minion. Grayson and I have been watching the little guy." He had a distant look in his eyes. I could tell that he was reliving the event. "A few fellow policemen found us holding the baby when we were leaving the bathroom and were kind enough not to make a scene. I guess the biological parents decided to call the cops and press charges and they saw what I look like. "

"Prince?" I know I should be mad, but I couldn't help but smile.

Grant looks slightly embarrassed. "Yeah, that's his ummm name."

I wrapped my arms around his necks and pulled him into a kiss.

I laugh against Grant's mouth as I hear Grayson pretending to gag.

"Sorry Grayson." I move back and hug Grant. "I'm proud of you G."

His eyes grow wide. "You're what?"

I smile. "You saved that baby."

Grayson shifts closer to us on the couch. "What are you guys whispering about?"

Grant rolls his eyes. "You just have to be involved in everything don't you?"

Grayson chuckles. "Don't flatter yourself, I just felt like you guys were talking about me."

"Ha! Yeah right." Grant shakes his head.

"So where is...Prince now?" I ask after a moment of silence.

"He's in some sort of protection agency, they're keeping him there until their able to investigate his biological parents." Grant looks at his feet.

My heart stings a little hearing this. "We have to get him back."

Grant's eyes grow wide. "You want to get him back?"

I can't believe would even ask me that. "Of course, I do! He deserves better than some agency."

"Let's go and see what we can do." Grant stands up and grabs his leather jacket as he walks towards the door, he looks back at me eagerly.

"I'm right behind you." I giggle.

Grayson squints at us. "Woah, wait! You guys are adopting a baby?"

Grant and I both freeze. Is that what we are doing? I make eye contact with Grant, and I can tell he's just as confused as I am.

"We're grabbing the kid." Grant says as he opens the door. Then he looks at Grayson. "You coming?"

"If I do, who's going to grab little man some food and diapers and stuff?" Grayson smirks.

I smile at Grayson. He's a sweet guy. "Thank you, Grayson."

He smiles back. "Don't worry about it, just go get the baby."

Grant and I walk out the door.

The first few minutes of the ride are silent. The elephant in the room has left us speechless.

I eventually give in. "Grant, do you want a baby?"

Grant chokes. "Huh?"

"Like do you want to adopt him? Are you planning on raising Prince as our own?"

Grant grips onto the steering wheel. "That would be crazy, we've only been dating for a year or so."

I sigh. "Grant, that wasn't a no."

"I think we can just watch him until we can find him a better home." He sounds like he's trying to convince himself more than he's trying to convince me.

I look over at him, he looks stressed. "You and I both know that's not going to be easy. You're already getting attached. Do you even actually want to give him up?"

Grant keeps his eyes focused on the road. "We can figure it out as we go Rinnie, we always do."

"Do you want to keep him, Grant?" My heart is racing at the conversation. I am not even sure how I feel about the situation.

He pauses for a moment, then answers quietly. "No. I don't think I'm dad material."

I place my hand over his gently. My heart aches to hear that he thinks he'd be a terrible father. It's so clear he wants to be one.  "You would be the best dad, don't sell yourself short."

He laughs humorlessly. "My dad sucks and that's the only dad I've ever known. Plus, I'm extremely irresponsible and a criminal."

"Grant, you just saved a baby, cut yourself some slack."

He doesn't speak.

"You never talk to me about your dad." I add after the silence becomes deafening.

He looks in pain, but still says nothing. His silence tells me everything he won't. I wonder what his dad has done to make Grant act this way, he acts this way about most of his family. It breaks my heart to know that Grant doesn't feel comfortable enough to open up to me. We've been friends for years and it makes me feel like a failure as a friend and now as a girlfriend that I haven't been able to breakthrough to him. I can't believe he'd want to go through this all alone. I wonder if Grayson knows anything about it. I make a mental note to ask him about it later.

When Grant finally speaks all he says is, "We're here."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After hours at the agency, Grant manages to convince them to let us take Prince until the investigation is over. Just as a temporary safe place for Prince while they see if his biological parents are fit to care for him. It's sad to say that I don't think they are judging by how Grant and Prince met. I worry about what will happen to him if he can't go back, where will Prince go? Grant won't talk about it no matter how hard I try. I sat there the whole time he was signing documents, once again amazed by Grant's persuasive powers. Who else would be able to charm their way into borrowing a baby in a single night? Luckily they already had a full background check run on Grant since he worked as a police officer and I was basically a witness. I couldn't be alone with Prince until I was cleared and Grant had to check in with the agency everyday to prove Prince is okay, but we got to take him home nonetheless.  It turns out Prince was literally the cutest baby I'd ever seen. He had dark brown curly hair and rare big beautiful eyes; one light green and one light brown.

Grant walks straight to the trunk and pulls out a car seat.

"When did you get that?" I asked, stunned.

He shrugs, opens the backdoor and starts installing it. "I may have made a stop after I stole him. I had to get him a new one, they weren't even using one for him. His biological parents are just plain," He hesitates, looking back at Prince. "Stupid."

I can't believe everything he did in less than an hour. I smile. "Yeah, stupid. How do you know how to install that?"

"I helped out with Eli." He tugged on the seatbelt, ensuring it was secure enough.

He walks over to me and reaches for Prince.

"How is Eli?" I ask. Eli is Grant's younger brother. He's a year younger than Grant. I've only seen him a handful of times before he moved to Florida. He and Grant fought constantly, but Grant has always been very protective of him.

I watched Grant strap Prince into his car seat, his face full of concentration as Prince stares up at him, giggling and kicking his feet.

I could tell Grant was grinning without even seeing his face. "Eli is just as annoying as ever." He focused on Prince. "What are you laughing at?"

I couldn't help but laugh too. "I'll sit in the back with him."

Grant makes a pouty face. "You already like him more than me!"

I climbed in beside Prince. "You can't seriously be shocked."

Grant chuckles and gets into the driver seat.

I by no means think we are ready to have a child of our own, but it's kind of nice to have us all here as a little family, even if it is temporary.

After a few minutes of playing with Prince, I remembered there was something I wanted to talk to Grant about.

"Hey Grant, weird story."

He looked at me through the rearview mirror. "Oh God, what does that mean?"

"Is there any chance you have a twin?"

He burst out laughing. "I mean I've been thinking that Prince and I look alike, but I didn't want to say anything."

"Grant he literally has dark curly hair and a green and brown eye, you look nothing alike." I smile. "I met some guy that looked exactly like you at the bar."

His eyebrows raise. "What?" His voice comes out serious, a rarity with Grant.

"He had your face, only difference was his hair was black and curly. I met him while I was looking for you and Grayson, you know before you called me."

Grant went pale. "You said you saw this guy at the bar, while Grayson and I were arrested?"

I nodded. "Yeah, weird right?"

"Yeah, what'd he say?"

I think back. "He just acted like he didn't know you, Grayson and I, but he thought he saw you two walking out the back door. Oh, and then he returned my keys that I dropped while I was running out the door to get you guys."

He took a deep breath. "If he ever tries to talk to you again, don't talk to him and call me immediately."

I take a minute, surprised by Grant's still serious tone. "Do you know him?"

He just looks back at the road. "He just seems off, I don't trust it."

I just sigh and go back to playing with Prince, wishing Grant would be more open with me, but knowing I can't make him talk.
