Bad Behavior

Grant makes a displeased face as I adjust the seat. "Rinnie, do your feet even reach the break?"

I side eye him. "My fist is about to reach your break."

He burst out laughing until I give him a disapproving look. "Sorry, I'm just used to driving."

"I prefer you driving too, so let's not make you getting sick a habit, okay?"

"Can you sing to me?" He says as if it's not a super random request.

"You want me to sing right now?"

"No, I need you to sing right now."

I drum my fingers along the steering wheel. How could I say no to that?  "Any requests?"

"Something romantic." He pauses for dramatic effect. "Womanizer by Brittany Spears?"

I veto the song right away. "Try again."

"Toxic and I want you to dance to it." He counters.

"That's not a compromise."

He puts his hand lightly on my thigh. "If you do that, I promise I'll be on my best behavior tonight. I'll listen to whatever you tell me to do."

"Play the song." I say without hesitation. I really needed him to let me take care of him tonight.

His fingers speedily type in the song title. "FYI, this is just good for tonight. I'm a rebel again tomorrow."

"So is me performing for you, which is going to be difficult while driving by the way."

The song begins to play, and I sing and dance my heart out. I surprise myself with how much I enjoy it. When I pull into my driveway the mood is light and airy.

Grant hops out of the car and jogs over to open my door. "That did something for me."

"It's too bad you're on bedrest."

He looks thrilled as he follows closely behind me. "Well then so are you, Rinnie." He winks at me, sending chills down my spine.

"Not that kind of bedrest. You need to take it easy mister."

He shocks me by being quiet as we enter the house.

"Want something to drink?" He walks to the kitchen and opens the fridge.

"I'm okay, thanks."

I watch him pull out a coke. He looks at me, skeptical. "Okay, say it."

"Say what?"

The coke fizzes when he cracks it open. "You're dying to say something, it's all over your face."

I press my back against the counter. "I don't like the fact that you're on drugs."

"Really, because I hid it to surprise you."

"How am I supposed to be okay with something that could kill you?" My voice cracks when I try to force the words out.

I watch his expression darken. He's in front of me in seconds. "We all die Rinnie, I'd like to die calm."

"No." I press my eyes closed. "Don't act like this is okay, this isn't okay Grant."

I can feel his breath against my face. "It's just how I've learned to cope."

My eyes fly open. "I can't imagine growing up with your mother, but you can't keep doing this to yourself. It's clearly not working. You're not happy."

"I'm happy." He attempts an awkward smile. "When I was a kid, my parents gave me some Xanax to calm me down and I just kept up with it. It was one of the only good things they did for me."

I grab his face and pull it near mine. "That isn't a good thing, it's abuse."

"No, it isn't." He insists. "It made me feel better, it helped me to take it."

I swallow. "So, you only take Xanax?"

He avoids my gaze. "Yeah, just Xanax.... Cocaine and Oxy."

"What?! Grant you can't be serious!" I can tell he's not kidding.

I grab his arm when he goes to walk away. "I'm really sorry, I know you didn't sign up to date a druggie."

The sadness in his eyes makes me want to cry. "Don't call yourself a druggie, you are too amazing to be called that. I signed up to date all of you, not just the easy parts. I don't love you any less, but I will not let you keep doing this to yourself.  I love you too much to watch you die."

"It won't be easy for me to quit, but I love you too much to make you watch me die." He pulls me into a hug and kisses the top of my head.

I smile into his chest. "You're going to quit?"

He messes with my hair. "Yeah, I realized I have too much to live for to die anytime soon. I haven't even married you yet."

I grip onto him so tight I am sure it'll leave marks. "Don't you dare propose right now, we are not ready for that."

His laugh tickles my ear. "Is that a no?"

I play with him. "I'd never marry a druggie."

"I'm too amazing to be called a druggie."

I place my hand on his chest, looking up at him. "Now you're getting it. I think that's the quickest you've learned something from me."

"Crap, what did I learn again? I forgot." He stares down at me with his signature smirk.

My phone rings, diverting my attention. Vanessa's name comes bright across my screen. "Sorry, I have to take this." I apologize to Grant.

"Of course, I'll be out in the living room." He walks away.

I hold the phone up to my ear. "Z, I'm freaking out."

"Why? Are you okay?" Concern overwhelms me.

She is silent for a minute. "The twins are INSANE!"

I am suddenly reminded of the weird run in Aiden and I had with Tricia in the hospital. Aiden promised he would make sure Alec told Vanessa about Tricia tonight. If he didn't tell her, I was going to tell her right now. She deserved to know. "Did Alec talk to you?"

"About Tricia?" She said, sounding unfazed.

I feel relieved that he told her. "Yeah, we saw her at the hospital."

"Yep, he told me. That's actually what I'm calling about. You won't believe what the twins just confessed to."

"What did they do?" I have no idea how this is all connected.

I hear a long sigh before she answers. "Alec and Aiden made a bet to see who could win me."

"A bet?!"

"Oh yeah. Apparently, they both had a thing for me so they made a bet to see who I would choose. Basically, they could say or do whatever they wanted to sabotage the other's chances. They wanted to see which one I would forgive no matter what, that's who would win. So, Aiden took it upon himself to sleep with Tricia and make me think it was Alec to see if I would be able to forgive Alec. Now, the idiots just found out that Tricia is pregnant, and their gig is up. Tricia doesn't even know that she slept with Aiden, not Alec."

My head tilts in confusion. "That's a lot to unpack. So, you're saying that the twins were fighting over you and this whole time that Alec has been a jerk Adien was behind it?"

"That's exactly what I'm saying. So, guess who's single?" She's joking but I know her well enough to be able to tell she's hurting.

What is wrong with the twins?! I'm so mad that they would do this to V, they're supposed to be her friend. "Alec."

"I dumped him immediately and told Aiden he didn't have a chance with me or his baby mama."

The way V stands up for what she deserves is admirable. "I'm so sorry V, are you okay?"

"Yeah, it's honestly what I expect from boys at this point. I can't believe I almost married that jerk!"

"I am going to kill both of them."

V chuckles. "Don't bother, I think I destroyed both of their self-esteems enough for tonight. I'm not a bet."

I nod in agreement even though she can't see me. "No, you're not and they should know that!" I can't help but wonder what this means for our friend group.

"How's Grant?"

"He's better, he's just watching TV."

"I'm glad he's doing better; tell him I'm coming to see him and complain about the twins tomorrow."

I sit on a bar stool. "You'd better, I miss you already!"

"You're needy. I miss you too." She laughs. "I'm going to let you go, I'm exhausted from all the yelling I've been doing. I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"

"Okay, see you then! Love you V."

"Love you Z." She says and hangs up.
