In a world set in the eighteenth century, vampires and humans lived in a combated world. The undead went through the night feasting on the blood of those edible enough to survive the ordeal or worse. And the humans lived beneath their feet in some parts of the world. At the mercy of the immortals, they were separated in their worlds. Human kings ruled over the humans and other kingdoms were ruled by a noble vampire. The two species hated each other for eons seeking to destroy the other with their pathetic weaknesses. But as the centuries went by the war dwindled into truces and treaties that bound them together.

Living in a village beneath the thumb of a vampire, a young baker's daughter grew up in this world surviving off the family business and selling her work for some profit. Her father was a baker known for his infamous bread and sweet cakes that were the talk of the town. They lived fairly normally until the dreaded plague struck their home. Her mother grew ill and the business was slowly failing. Her father turned to gambling to make some profit for his family, but after months of no income he agreed to a debt with a vampire. No name was given but a loan was taken in the brief exchange.

The young woman lived a normal life for many until one fateful night the king of the vampires arrived at her home. A debt owed by her father and sought to be collected one way or another. Yet when the debt was not collected a new form of payment was struck - his daughter. A prized possession to the baker was the perfect solution to ensure that such a deal would not be made with the addict. The vampire king had long been searching for a trophy to ensure that he would have a pawn to play in court. Along with getting the other vampires off his back by proposing such a deal as a form of marriage. A blood-binding pact between humans and vampires as a sign of good faith between both parties. However, the young woman did not see the pleasure of being a bride. The young woman protested against the proposition, but her father agreed to it in order to save their business and family. The deal was sealed leaving no room for objection from the young woman to escape her new fate.

Whisked away by the vampire king who all but fancied the new flesh he had in his possession. But his attraction was met with sarcasm and bitterness from the artist seeking to hate the beast at all costs. The feuding pair arrived to live in his dark castle at the top of a treacherous mountain. An agreement was made that they both remain far away from each other. However, the vampire king all but flirtatious and confident has other plans to whoo his new bride. He arranged a ball to announce their engagement to the kingdom with vampire lords and nobles alike coming to witness the new couple. Many found it hard to believe a human could be anything but the future queen while others sought to extinguish the new toy to thwart what joy it brought to their king. The young woman remained poised to the public but soon showed her true colors for her betrothed in loathing him.

As the days and weeks go by after the event, the pair begin to see each other in another light. A beast that was nothing more than a man who sought to be loved and not feared. A spirit that searched to explore a world and feel at home for once in her life. Yet the world around them is always shifting. Alliances are being broken and reborn as the vampires and humans seek to end the warring affair between them. One power will come out on top, but will the lovers come out with it?
