Chapter 16: Warning

Alex's POV

Jamie and I were in Matthew's office. I was sitting on the black leather couch while Jamie was laying on the other half with his head in my lap. He had fallen asleep not to long ago and I was glad because he hasn't been sleeping that good.

Once Jamie told me about his suspicions with Xavier, I knew he didn't feel safe. I asked Matthew if we could hang out, so we went over to his house. I didn't want to tell the alphas yet because I feel like his mom needs to know what's going on before we do anything.

"Is he okay?" Jack asked, referring to Jamie.

I looked down at my mate and my hand went into his hair. "Yeah, he's okay. He's just been having sleep problems lately."

"Is there anything causing it?" Matthew asked. I watched as his thumb ran along the back of Jack's hand and Jack was staring down at it with a small smile.

"Nightmares."

"Any in specific?" Jack asked, his eyes shooting up to me.

"I don't know. He doesn't want to talk about it."

I looked down at my mate in concern. Maybe something was happening within our pack that we haven't noticed yet. Maybe this has to do with Xavier and we just don't know.

"We'll figure it out later." Matthew said to me and I nodded, not taking my eyes off of my sleeping mate.

"He's adorable." I heard Jack say and I smiled up at him as he stared at Jamie.

"He really is." I whispered.

My hand ran down his arm, softly. Once I reached his hand, it clasped around mine. I looked at his face and he had a small smile on it.

"Jamie?" I whispered.

His eyes fluttered open and he smiled wider at me. "Hey, darling."

"Hey, princess."

My hand gripped his and we suddenly heard a loud screeching sound. I looked up at Matthew. He groaned. "Hunters."

We all stood up and we ran out of Matthew's house. Jamie stayed by my side as we made it to the courtyard. We saw fighting between the hunters and our pack and I could feel my wolf starting to reach the surface.

I leaned over to Jamie and kissed him, quickly. He looked up at me with a terrified expression. "I love you."

He smiled at me. "I love you too."

I ran towards the crowd forming and Matthew pulled me to the side. I stared at him. "What're we doing?"

"Someone's bringing them here, Alex. The gate was wide open and our two guards that were stationed there were killed. They're stationed inside, so someone killed them and let the hunters in."

"Who would let hunters in? They don't work with wolves!" I yelled over the noise that was progressively getting louder.

"I don't know!" He whispered into my ear.

"Let's talk about this after. Let's go help our pack." I told him. We shifted, quickly, and ran towards our pack. I bit into a hunters neck who had a gun pointed to one of our guards head. My hind leg kicked the gun to the side.

I felt a sting in my chest and I couldn't quite find out what it was, so I kept fighting. I rammed into a hunter and trapped him against a tree. He looked at me with wide eyes as I snapped my canines at him. I bit into his neck and the taste of blood filled my mouth. It matted against my fur and I wiped it on the grass that was next to my paw.

The feeling in my chest got worse, but I had to ignore it for my pack. I was running towards another hunter until I saw all of the hunters hands lift and point a gun at the wolves.

I heard a piercing scream and I knew exactly who it belonged to. I shifted back to my human form, glad that our clothes came with us. I looked around, but trying not to alert any of the armed hunters.

I saw a crowd of humans who were frozen in their spot and they all looked terrified. I watched some of them move to make a path and my heart plummeted to the ground. I watched my mate struggling in someone's arms with a gun pointed at his temple. I tried to run and scream for him, but a hand clasped around my mouth and an arm wrapped around my waist. I was pulled against a body and I struggled against them.

"You're gonna get all of us killed." My alpha growled at me.

I tried screaming into his hand, but it was super muffled. I tried hitting him, but he was pretty stronger than me, so he wasn't that fazed by it.

"I'm gonna remove my hand, can I trust you to be quiet?" He whispered to me.

I nodded my head and he slowly lifted his hand off of my mouth. "He's gonna hurt him." I whispered as soft as I could.

"He's gonna be okay."

"Matthew.." I whispered, gripping his arm as the sight of my mate made my stomach flip.

"I promise you, Alex. He's going to be okay."

I quickly wiped the tears away from my cheeks, so he didn't see my tears. My princess was in danger. He had a gun to his head and there was nothing I could do.

"The alpha and beta are going to step forward now." The hunter holding my baby said.

Matthew stepped forward and I followed him as we walked towards the man. Jamie had so many tears running down his face. I noticed that his hands were tied together by very, very tight rope. The man had a death grip on his hair and he kept whimpering from it.

The gun was pressed against his temple and I feared of the bruise that would be there once he was back in my arms. I wasn't going to let that bitch shoot my baby.

The hunter gave us a creepy smile and I glared at him as did Matthew. "We're going to have a conversation."

"We can have one when you let him go." I growled to him. I met Jamie's eyes and he was biting his lip from screaming.

"No, we're gonna have one now." He said with a deathly smile.

"You're gonna die, no matter what you fucking do."

Matthew reached over, gripping my arm and glaring at me. I knew that what I was saying probably was a long shot. There were so many hunters surrounding us, more than wolves and it actually terrified me.

"That's not gonna happen either." He said, coldly.

"What do you want from my pack?" Matthew growled.

"This is just a warning, alpha." He said.

"Warning for what?" I growled to him and Matthew had to keep his grip on me because my wolf was prepared to strike.

"Warning that bigger things are coming and we'll be back." He whispered.

"We got the fucking message, so let him go!" I yelled.

Jamie was staring at me and all I wanted right now was to be at home in bed with him. I looked back at the hunter and he was smirking at me.

"We have guns pointing at your pack, so I would calm the fuck down before we start shooting. I'll go first." He said, referring to his finger that was on the trigger of the gun to my boyfriend's head. My heart started racing so fast that I felt like it would burst. Jamie whimpered and squeezed his eyes shut.

"Okay, okay, no one's going to hurt your men. I give you my word. Just let him go." I told him, holding my hands up.

I saw Matthew nod, which told the pack not to move a muscle and hurt anyone around them. The hunter smirked again before removing the gun from Jamie's head. I expected him to throw my mate at me, but he didn't. He trailed the gun across the skin of his neck and I heard my mate whimper, which hurt my chest even more.

"Please." I begged.

He stared at me as the gun was pushed against the side of his neck and Jamie was about to scream in pain, but he bit his lip instead.

"I'll do anything."

"Tell your pack to stay where they are until we're gone." He said to me.

"They will. We got your warning, so leave." Matthew said.

The hunter smirked at us before pushing Jamie onto the ground and he landed on his side. I was about to run to him, but the hunter was staring at me and Matthew's hand tightened on my arm.

"Good boy." He teased me and I growled deep in my throat. He lowly chuckled before ordering his pack to leave. Once his back was to me, I ran towards my mate. Matthew still stood in his spot, so the pack did too.

"I'm right here. I'm here." I whispered to my mate. I tried to untie the rope, but it was too tight. I looked at Matthew and he reached into his pocket before handing me a pocket knife.

I was extra careful as I cut the rope off of his wrists. Jamie was staring at me with a pained expression until it cleared up once the rope was off. I threw the knife down and pulled him into my lap.

"I am so sorry. I should've stayed with you." I whispered, taking his hands in mine. He yelped in pain as I grabbed his left hand. I then noticed the bright blue bruises on it as I looked closely.

"H-h-he pushed me down and s-stepped on m-m-my hand." He whispered to me.

"My princess." I whispered before setting his head on my shoulder. I watched as the whole pack was staring at us and I blushed at that fact. I looked up at Matthew and he was watching the retreating hunters. Once they were out of sight, Matthew looked around at his wolves.

"We'll have a mandatory meeting in three hours." He commanded, then moved towards us. The whole pack started to move and shift too and I sighed in relief.

Matthew kneeled next to us. "Jamie, are you okay?"

"N-no." He whispered.

"What hurts, baby?" I asked him.

"My head, m-my hands and wrists, and my n-neck."

"Okay, we'll go to the pack hospital to see what's going on." I whispered.

"I l-love you so m-much, Alex." He whispered to me before starting to sob even more. Matthew gave me a sympathetic look as I rubbed Jamie's back.

"I love you so much, princess." I whispered back, kissing right next to his temple and his sobs started to calm down.

"Come on." Matthew whispered to us, standing up.

I helped Jamie up, wrapping my arm around his waist. He had a little limp and I think it was from being pushed down by that hunter. I looked at his head and it was already starting to bruise.

"Where's Jack?" Matthew asked, but I knew that he could tell that he was safe.

"W-when we saw that hunter walking towards us, I knew he wanted m-me because he was l-looking only at me. I ordered a m-member of the pack to t-take him to y-your house. Was that o-okay?" Jamie whispered.

"Yes, Jamie, that was okay. That was more than okay. Thank you for keeping him safe." Matthew told him with a genuine smile.

"When whatever happens happens, I'm not going to fight with the pack." I told my alpha.

"No, Alex, you can't do t-that." Jamie whispered to me.

"Whatever is happening is happening to you. You're the one that got taken by that hunter, not Jack. Why would they miss an opportunity to take an alpha?"

Matthew's eyes shot up to me. "Unless they were after someone else."

Jamie looked up at me. "Why me?"

"I don't know, princess, but I'm not leaving your side until we do know."

"But the p-pack needs-" Jamie started.

"No, he's right. You need protection, so I'll have some guards outside of your house until we know what's going on." Matthew told him.

"What about Xavier?" My mate asked me.

I leaned down and whispered to him. "We'll tell your mom and the alphas together and they'll think of what to do."

He nodded up at me and we stepped into the hospital where nurses and doctors were running down hallways. The man we were looking for was sitting in a chair by the entrance. Once Dr. Moore saw us, he stood up.

"Hey, Jamie. I was expecting you to come. Let's go get you checked out."

My mate looked up at me with a scared expression and I tightened my grip on his waist. "I am not leaving your side."

"Thank you." He whispered.

Whatever is happening to my princess, no matter what it was, I'm going to make sure it doesn't reach him again because he only deserves love and comfort, not pain and suffering.
