Chapter 28-The Surprise Visitor
Miranda Barone's POV
The feeling of someone hugging me too tightly woke me up. I yawned and turned around to see Slade almost strangling me. A slow smile graced my lips and I took him in. He was dangerously beautiful and he was mine. Was I really falling in love with him? I sighed and pushed that thought away before deciding to make breakfast for us.
It was a routine we had, I usually make breakfast or lunch and Slade would serve us dinner. I mean who knew Slade or Sebastian Kolosov could be so domestic? Certainly not me. In fact I was still reeling from the fact that Slade's real name was Sebastian even though it has been a week since he revealed it. I didn't know why he thought it wasn't cool enough. In my opinion, I thought it was really sexy.
Sebastian Kolosov.
I sighed and got out of the bed or well tried to get out of it. Slade's hold on me was tight and I slowly pulled away from him. Once I was out, I quickly grabbed a pillow and stuffed it in Slade's arms as a replacement for me. I watched with a smile on my face as his arms quickly wrapped themselves around the pillow before snuggling his head to it.
Once I was done with my morning necessities and I was fully dressed, I headed down to make breakfast. Mark and Tony only came around noon before I went for work but seeing that it was a Sunday, they only came by when Slade wasn't around and I was okay with that. It meant that I got to spend more alone time with him.
I took out the eggs and bacon before frying them and turned on the coffee machine. Soon enough, a grumpy Slade came down the stairs, he was still in his boxers and glared at me as his husky voice rumbled out. "Why weren't you in bed?" I sighed before shoving some slices of bread into the toaster.
It was going to be one of those mornings when Slade woke up from the wrong side of the bed. Mustering up all the patience I had, I smiled at him before scooping the bacon and eggs and laid the freshly toasted bread on the plate before serving it to him. "I was making breakfast."
Slade grumbles to himself before grabbing the plate from me and placed it on the island counter and waited for me. I quickly took my share and joined him there and we started having breakfast together.
Licking my lips, I started, "What are your plans today? I have to run some errands at the mall." Slade grimaced, "Fine. I'll follow but make it quick."
I pursed my lips, "You don't have to come you know. I mean Mark and Tony would suffice." I said casually and my really grumpy boyfriend glared at me. "Shut up and lets go. I have a business meeting to get to later."
I shrugged before putting the plates into the dishwasher. "I'm all dressed to go. It's you that has to get ready before we can go." I gave him a bright smile and he wrinkled his nose. "Do you have to wear a skirt? I mean isn't it freezing out there?"
"I'll be wearing a coat and besides once we get into the mall, it's gonna be hot. So why not?" I asked and raised an eyebrow. Slade narrowed his eyes at me before stalking off to get changed.
Men.
I rolled my eyes. You either hate them or you love them. Soon enough, Slade came down and my jaw almost dropped. He was wearing a well fitted navy suit that defined his muscular body and the navy made his crystal blue eyes stand out.
He was deliciously sexy in a suit. Ugh. "Why are you wearing a suit to the mall?" I questioned and Slade gave me a smirk. "I told you, I had a business meeting later."
I hated the fact that he knew I found him irresistible in a suit. I rolled my eyes and grabbed my coat before exiting the apartment, "Whatever, but I'm driving."
"Sure."
***
"Mel, why the hell are we looking at fucking candles?"
I took the lid off the candle and sniffed it, enjoying the scent of honey and vanilla. "Well why not? I mean, the ones we have at home are finishing. Besides doesn't it smells nice?" I offered it to Slade's nose and he grimaced and took a sniff.
"That smells like your shampoo." He gives me a deadpan expression and I rolled my eyes before placing it back. "Fine. Let's look at something else then." I turned away and began walking off.
He groans before taking the candle from the shelf and placed it into the shopping basket. Catching his action, I smirked to myself before walking on. He catches up with me and glares. "Why the hell did we have to come here on a bloody Sunday morning anyway? It's fucking crowded."
I rolled my eyes again and stare up at him, "There's barely thirty people in here and I have to remind you that you didn't have to tag along remember?"
Slade maintained his glare on me before grumbling under his breath. I smirked smugly to myself. Ha! Seems that I won this tiny argument. I patted myself on the back well done because I hardly won any arguments with him.
We continued walking down the aisle and I spotted a group of females that we were staring at Slade in awe and admiration. I sighed inwardly, was there anywhere that Slade could go without attracting female attention? And by the slight twitch on his lips, it was clear that my boyfriend knew this as well.
Ugh, did he have to wear a suit?! I scowled to myself before walking on. "Why does everyone recognise you?" I grumbled and Slade shot me an amused and smug grin. "No they don't, I'm just that gorgeous."
I rolled my eyes at his arrogance, "Sure. You run a billion dollar company and a mob. How does one not recognise you?"
Slade shrugs before picking up a glass decorative item and putting it back. "No one does. I'm a rather private person. People only know my name, they don't know my face because I don't show my face in public often as the CEO or whatever."
"Really?" I question and Slade shoots me a smug grin, "You just can't accept the fact that I'm this good looking can you?"
Stupid conceited ass. I made a face and ignored him as I walked to the female department and Slade's laughter echoed behind me.
Once he caught up with me, he remained silent and suddenly called out, "Hey do you have this set in your drawer?" I turned around and blushed furiously. "Slade Kolosov!" I hissed and he exploded into raucous laughter. I grabbed the racy nightgown from his grasp and shoved it back to the rack before turning around, hoping that no one noticed him. "Ugh! You're ridiculous!!"
He let out a laugh at my expression before wrapping an arm around my waist. "Did I ever tell you that when you say my last name, it's really sexy?" Slade purred and I rolled my eyes and shot him an unamused glare.
"Good to know." I mumbled and grabbed the basket from him before making my way to the checkout counters. I quickly handed my credit card to the cashier before Slade could because I knew he would insist on paying and I didn't want him to. Considering the fact that I stay with him, letting him buy me stuff would make me feel like his paid woman or something.
"Mel, why didn't you let me pay?" He growled in annoyance and I gave him an innocent grin. "Because I wanted to." He opened his mouth to argue but his phone rang. Scowling, he answered and barked out a few sentences in Russian before hanging up. "I have to go now but I'll send you back before leaving. I'll call Mark and Tony to go over."
I nodded before he took the shopping bags and led me to the car. This time, I didn't argue when he took the keys from me. I knew he wanted to show his masculine side because I didn't let him pay for my stuff so I kept quiet. The drive home was uneventful except that Slade held my hand the entire time and I couldn't help but smile like an idiot.
True enough, Mark and Tony were waiting for me when Slade dropped me off. With a chaste kiss on the lips and a goodbye, he was gone. I handed some of my shopping bags to Mark and glanced longingly at the cafe opposite the building.
Mark being Mark obviously knew what I was thinking. "Right, Tony you can bring Mel's crap up and I'll follow her to the cafe." I sent Mark a sheepish glance and a tiny glare. "They're not crap!" Tony rolled his eyes and went up.
Mark and I continued bickering until I bought my favourite peach tart and other pastries. Seeing that it was a weekend, the streets was super crowded. I exited the shop first and crossed the road before Mark could.
As I approached the apartment building, I noticed Slade just standing outside the building and staring up at it. I frowned, didn't Slade leave for work and wasn't he dressed in a suit? Not just pants and a white button down shirt. What was my boyfriend doing?
Walking over to him, I asked before gasping, "Why are you sta-What did you do your hair?"
Instead of the usual dark blonde locks on his forehead, his hair was gelled backwards and his stubble-that I loved-was gone. What just happened in like thirty minutes?
He blinked, "What?"
"Your hair-" It was then I realised that Slade was supposed to be more muscular and his temple was supposed to have a faint scar. "Oh my god. You're not Slade." I gasped in shock and took a step back. The man narrowed his eyes and took a step towards me. "You know Sebastian?"
If Slade hadn't told me about his actual name, I would have absolutely no idea what this man standing in front of me was talking about. "Yes. Why do you look exactly like him?"
Than it hit me, this was most probably Slade's older brother. But they were identical twins?! "You must be his older brother." I said gobsmacked and the man scrutinised me. "And who exactly are you to him?" Slade's brother's Russian accent was less noticeable and his voice wasn't as deep and seductive as Slade.
"I'm Slade or Sebastian's girlfriend. Miranda Barone." I said hesitantly and the man raised his eyebrows. "Girlfriend?"
"Yes. Are you here to see Slade?" I questioned and before the man could reply, Mark and Tony came to us curiously seeing that Tony had already put my stuff at home. "Mel, who is-woah." Mark just stared at Slade's brother with his jaw on the ground. Immediately, Tony took out his gun from his back pocket and jutted it into Slade's brother's back discretely.
"Tony! What are you doing? Put the gun away!" I demanded and Tony answered, "Protocol. Boss said to do this if a man that looked exactly like him showed up. After, we'll dispose his body in the lake."
Slade's brother simply stared coolly at Tony despite the very intimidating weapon that was just aimed at his back. "Funny. I'm just here to see the man running the Mob." He said tonelessly.
"Tony, put the gun away. He's Slade's brother." I coaxed and Tony shook his head, "Sorry Mel. I can't." I sighed, "Well, can we have this family drama thing upstairs and not in public?"
Tony opened his mouth to protest before I shot him a pleading look. "Fine." He gave in but took out a pair of handcuffs and cuffed it on Slade's brother before pushing him into the building. No one shot us extra glances and it was most probably the fact that they were used to this sort of scene and I pursed my lips at that realisation.
"Is that really necessary?" I questioned sceptically regarding the handcuffs as we rode up the elevator. "Yes." Tony answered and I sighed. Slade's brother remained silent and watched us with a blank expression on his face.
Once we arrived, Mark and I holding onto the pastries and Tony holding onto Slade's brother before shoving him to the sofa. "Slade isn't home yet. You can't really leave him like this can you Tony?" I said feeling a little bad for Slade's brother who was watching us with his arms cuffed in front of him. It was clear that being handcuffed wasn't the most comfortable thing in the world.
"Mel, its for your safety." Mark answered for Tony as he placed my pastries into the refrigerator while still staring at Slade's brother in awe.
"I wouldn't hurt a woman!" Slade's brother spat and Tony pressed the gun further into his gut. "Tony!" I scolded and he gave me a shrug as a response. I sighed and gave a glass of water to him before saying hesitantly. "You're Slade's older brother aren't you? What's your name?"
"Grayson." He answered and studied me.
It was unnerving having Slade's face on someone else. The same blue eyes were staring at me and the way he narrowed his eyes at me was the same way that Slade did. It was strange and uncomfortable.
Trying to break the awkward atmosphere, I cleared my throat and gave a small grin to Grayson. "So you wanted to see Slade?"
"Yes." He stated and I nodded my head, "Oh." I suddenly blurted out, "Slade doesn't really talk about you. I mean he only told me that he has an older brother but he didn't say that both of you were twins."
Grayson met my gaze, "That is expected."
I pursed my lips and murmured, "Oh. I see."
Another awkward silence ensued and this time Grayson broke it, "Why are you with Sebastian?"
I looked up at Grayson and then at Mark and Tony before blushing, "Because I really like him as a person." From where I was sitting, Mark wiggled his eyebrows at me and I ignored him.
Grayson remained silent and I bit my lower lip from the awkward silence. Thankfully, the main door open and footsteps sounded. Slade was home. Honestly, I didn't know if this was a good or a bad thing considering Grayson was here.
"Mel sweetheart, get dressed, I'm taking you out for dinner." Slade called out as he entered the foyer. Immediately Grayson stiffened and sat up straight, his entire expression going blank.
"Uh, I think we have other plans now." I answered back nervously as I stood up and went besides Mark. "What? What the fuck do you mean by th-" Slade cut himself off when he entered the living room and saw Grayson sitting on the sofa and being cuffed.
Beside me, Mark let out a whistle, "Woah." I gave him a quick glance before looking back at Slade. All of us watched the scene in silence and Slade spoke out. His tone was cold and emotionless and his fists were clenched. "Why isn't he dead?" He turned to Tony and shot him a murderous expression. "I gave all of you instructions didn't I?"
"Mel is here." Tony answered and Slade clenched his jaw before looking me over. "Are you hurt?" He asks and I shook my head. "No I'm fine. Honest." Slade narrows his eyes at me as if he was trying to make sure I wasn't lying.
Once he was satisfied that I wasn't harmed, he took out a gun from his suit jacket and aimed it at Grayson. "Fine, I'll do it." My eyes widened. He wasn't serious was he? He flicked the safety off and I rushed towards him. I laid a hand on his shoulder and his muscles were all bunched up. His body posture was tense and rigid.
"Slade! You can't be serious." I gasped and moves to stand in front of him. Slade glares at me, "Mel, move out of the way." He warned and I shook my head. "He's your brother. Your twin brother." I emphasised and Slade scoffed, "I don't have one."
"Slade Kolosov!"
"Miranda, move out of the way." He gritted through his teeth and I shook my head. "I'm not letting you kill your own brother Slade." I said determinedly and he narrows his eyes at me and stares me down.
Seeing that I wasn't going to budge, he snarled angrily to Mark and Tony, "Get him out of my fucking house." He flicked the safety back on and stalked into his office before slamming the door shut.
I let out a heavy sigh and Mark and Tony wordlessly took Grayson away and left. Had I ruined things between Slade and I? I hoped not, but I knew I was doing the right thing by not letting Slade kill his own brother. Things were obviously bad between them and I knew deep down, if Slade ever killed his own brother, he would regret it even though he wouldn't say a word about it.
I chewed on my lower lip anxiously, debating if I should enter the study. No, not yet, I knew I had to give Slade some time to cool off. I cooked a simple meal for the both of us and placed his share on a tray.
I exhaled and straightened my shoulders and knocked on the door before entering. Slade was gripping onto an alcoholic drink in his hand and staring out of the window. I went towards his desk and placed the tray of food there.
"Slade?" I asked softly but he didn't respond. Biting my lower lip, I started, "Why didn't you tell me he was your twin?"
Slade was silent for a while and I almost thought he was ignoring me until he responded, "Because to me, I don't have one. Not anymore."
"But you told me you have a brother-" I started and Slade cut me off as he turned towards me, eyes flashing, "Drop the subject!" He snarled and I took a step back stunned. Seeing my reaction, he sighed and relaxed, "Just go to bed Mel. I'll join you later." His tone gentled and I went towards him and kissed his cheek. "Alright then."
As I turned to leave, he called out to me. "Thank you for dinner." I turned around and gave him a small smile before leaving.
After doing my necessities, I slipped into bed and fell asleep, thoughts of Slade and his brother on my mind.
