Chapter 10 - Glitz & Glamour

Today I had lunch hour all to myself. The committee was meeting during last period today to talk about themes, so I sat comfortably eating away.

Chloe was nowhere to be seen. But I didn't mind sitting alone, it was pleasant and very calming. I'd rather sit and enjoy my own company then sit with a bunch of noisy people who pick at my food. Chloe was the only one who didn't do that, maybe it's because her tray was always packed.

Within fifteen minutes I was done eating, so I pulled out my counselling notebook and went through my notes. Most of the problems that I had written down were solved. I smiled when I saw this. It meant I was good at what I was doing. Hope I'm this good in the real world though. You know, after college.

As I packed my book away, Zed approached me. He had a bit of a smile on his face. Wonder what's making him smile. Maybe it's the fact that his sister will be doing his laundry.

"Hey Rose" He greets me, interrupting my thoughts.

"Zed" I say with a nod, standing from my seat.

"Just wanted to say..Um, thanks for setting me up with Sara. She's cool" He says, scratching his head as he walks beside me out of the cafeteria.

"You two talked?" I ask curiously, thinking back to this morning when she had her phone with her.

"Yeah, we've been at it since morning. We're actually getting a bite after school" He tells me.

I smile at the thought of Sara being happy with who I've picked as her date. I thought she would have a problem but I guess she's not picky. The first cheerleader I've seen who isn't picky, that's for sure.

"That's great, Zed. I'm glad" I say, heading down the hallway to my next class.

"You wouldn't happen to know what's the theme for homecoming, right?" Zed asks me with a raised eyebrow. Wow, he's actually taking this seriously. I'm amazed.

"Actually, we're gonna decide on that today. But everyone should know by tonight or tomorrow. Just keep an eye on the school site" I tell him with a smile.

Zed gives me two thumbs up before walking in the other direction.

It was last period and I was making my way to the Library for the meeting. During English class, my name was embarrassingly called out over the intercom. Turns out His Magnificent wants to see me after school today. I wonder what's his problem now. Last I checked, I hadn't skipped any classes since our last little chat.

As usual, I'm the last to arrive. Even Lyla gets here before me, but it's only because her classes are always nearby. On the other hand, I had to walk up the stairs and down the hallway.

"Ah, she's here! Let's begin" Skye exclaims, opening up her book.

Everyone else shuffles about,  getting their books and whatnot out. I take a seat beside Lyla and roll my eyes when I see her busy on her phone.

"Hi Rose" she greets me without even looking at me.

"Lyla" I reply, grabbing my notebook out of my bag.

I'm hoping we'd get the chance to talk later. I really want to get this thing with Jesse over with. I hate being in this position and if Lyla ever found out that I was feeding information to Jesse, she'd definitely have my head.

Lyla puts her phone down and starts the meeting. Everyone pays close attention as if she's the queen. It's like every word she says is gold. I sigh, lean back and listen to whatever she's saying.

"First things first people. We need a theme" she says excitedly, looking around the table.

I try to think of a good theme but I can't seem to focus.

"Oh Lyla, how about 80's?" Skye asks, grinning.

Half of the group were nodding and the other half seemed uninterested. Seems like it's going to take a lot of work to get everyone to agree on something.

"I think they did 80's two years ago. We should do something else" Angus says, after going through his laptop.

"Rose, do you have any suggestions?" Skye asks, smiling at me.

"What?" I respond, sitting up straight.

"A theme. Do you have a theme in mind?" Lyla says, looking at me expectantly.

I try my hardest to think of something. It's extra difficult when everyone is staring at you, expecting a great answer. Shit!

"A. . .Maybe. .Um.. .glitz and glamour could be fun. It's very. ..elegant?" I nervously blurt out, shrugging. I have no clue what I'm saying. I have zero experience with these kinda things.

"Brilliant!" Skye exclaims, clasping her tiny hands together.

Everyone in the group seemed to be nodding in agreement with my theme. Looks like I said something right, for once.

I turned to Lyla who was writing something down. She passed the paper over to Angus who quickly began typing on his laptop.

"That's a great theme. Everyone will love it!" She tells me, giving me a nod.

Angus updated the details and included that the theme was glitz and glamour. He was going to post it up on the school site when he got home. By that time, we should have finalised everything else we haven't talked about yet.

A few of us were in charge of decorating the gym, so they had to have their own little meeting to decide on who was doing what. I was in charge of the drinks table and Lyla and Angus were in charge of the catering.
Skye's going to be the Dj and she seemed over the moon about it.

By the time our meeting ended, it was half past three.

I decided to speak to Lyla before heading to my space for abit to research on some drinks I could whip up for homecoming. All non-alcoholic ones, too.

As she packed her bag, she turned to me and gave me a small smile.

"The meeting was a success. Everything seems to be on track" I tell her, hoping she would start up a conversation.

"Yes, finally! I was nervous we weren't going to get things moving on time and Mr . Montgomery would have to cancel the event" she says, grinning.

I chuckled a bit as we made our way out of the Library. We were both headed in the same direction so we continued talking.

"So who's your date for homecoming, Rose?" Lyla asks, before pulling out and applying some lip gloss.

"No one" I tell her, looking down. "I'm actually going by myself."

Lyla stopped walking and stared at me, eyes wide.

"Are you kidding?" She asks in disbelief.

"No, I'm not!" I reply, chuckling.

"Wow. I guess we're two different people" she tells me.

"Guess so. But I thought you'd also be going alone since you and Jesse. . You know"

"Oh, no. I'd never let something like that make me go alone. I'll always have a backup incase things don't work out" she says, giving me a wink.

"What was it like dating Jesse?" I ask curiously as we approached the lockers.

I watch her facial expressions just to see if she was going to get mad about me asking. But she seems pretty okay with it. She just gave a faint smile before unlocking her locker.

"Jesse was like my best friend. He's a great person and anyone would be lucky to have him. After he gets over this, I'm hoping we could be friends" Lyla says, smiling.

"Why did you break up if you were best friends?" I ask slowly, not wanting to seem like I'm digging for a story to publish. Well, in a way I'm digging for something, but not in a bad way. I'm just trying to help Jesse!

"Well, let's see" she starts, shutting her locker and turning to face me. "We were together for years and I kinda felt like we were straying. Like, our relationship didn't have adventure anymore. I started to feel like I had a brother - sister love, instead of boyfriend - girlfriend. It's hard to explain."

"Why didn't you come to me for advice?" I ask her. Maybe if I helped her out, they wouldn't have broken up and I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing now.

"We weren't exactly talking, Rose" she responds, before walking away.

"Hmph" I reply, shrugging. Guess she's right about that part.

I watched as she walked away and almost passed out when I saw Jesse pass me. He was walking hurriedly to catch up with Lyla and it looks like he couldn't wait for my follow-up with her.

"Oh no, he's going to ruin everything!" I mutter to myself, trying to figure out a way to stop him.

"Jesse!" I call out, but he doesn't turn around or even acknowledge me.

"Je-- Oh what the hell? Let him ruin it" I tell myself, rolling my eyes in annoyance. I put on my bag and walk to where the next drama was going to take place.
