REAL LIFE

         "Oh, that is disgusting."

"What? It's so good!" Hailey protested while the group around her laughed.

She made Oscar try her mint chocolate chip ice cream, and to say the least; he was not amused. Nobody was, except Hailey and her favorite ice cream flavor.

As the six of them started bickering about specific ice cream flavors, they continued walking along the boardwalk, which was illuminated by bright lights as the sun began to settle with the minutes passing. Laughter and crowds were all around them and everywhere you looked was a new sight to see of events and activities. How had Hailey never been to one of these before?

"Oh my gosh, you guys!" Lanaiya exclaimed, almost dropping her ice cream cone in excitement. Lando chuckled next to her, looking at his girlfriend with nothing but adoration.

"What?" Aurélie asked.

The blonde pointed up high and her friends all turned to where she was signaling for them to look. With bright lights and a tall figure, a Ferris wheel (a sort of fancy and huge-looking one at that) was just a few feet ahead of them.

Hailey's eyes light up, "I've always wanted to ride one of those."

A bewildered Oscar turns to her in disbelief. She knew his eyes were on her and her cheeks felt red, feeling a little embarrassed. Hailey turned her gaze to him to see his eyes widened and full of shock.

"You've never ridden a Ferris wheel?" He asks, his serious Australian accent making Hailey snicker.

She shakes her head, "Nope." She responded, popping the 'p' and fiddling with her fingers.

"Okay, now we have to go," Jude scoffs playfully, throwing his empty ice cream cup into the trashcan right next to him.

Aurélie immediately nods, "Agreed."

After the entire group crowded Hailey with questions and they waited in a pretty short line, everyone was riding the Ferris wheel. Hailey was finally going on one for the first time.

Was she scared? Yes. But she didn't make it known. Heights weren't her thing, especially going up and down constantly. No wonder she hadn't ridden many rollercoasters and other rides before. This was almost terrifying.

The group split up into duos. Aurélie and Jude of course, then Lando and Lanaiya, and finally Hailey and Oscar.

Oscar was sat to Hailey's left and they strapped in, waiting for other passengers to get in.

"You seem nervous," He laughed slightly, looking down at her with gentle eyes. She avoids eye contact with him and looks straight ahead at the ocean in front of them.

"Nah," Her head shakes. "I'm fine."

"That did not sound fine."

"I am totally fine. More than fine, actually." She retorts but still doesn't look anywhere else but ahead.

Oscar shakes his head and breathes out a laugh at Hailey's stubbornness and how obvious it was that she was in fact nervous.

"You know I think there might be something wrong with our capsule..." Oscar shifts in the seat and fiddles with the bar holding them in. He starts looking around the cart they're sitting in as if he's examining it or looking for something.

"What?" Hailey panics, looking at him immediately. "What do you mean?"

"I think some screws may be loose on the—"

"Oh fuck no," She looks up and covers her face in her hands. "Tell the people to get me off this ride!"

Before she could finish her sentence, they began moving and the lights started flickering in a frenzy as the ride slowly began.

Just as she is about to complain, Oscar's laugh fills her ears. A laugh so ridiculous, it could be heard from miles away. She gasps in betrayal.

"You dick!" He continues laughing, finding the little joke he pulled hilarious.

"I cannot believe you would trick me like that," She scowls, then sighs in relief that their cart isn't actually broken. Oscar's laughter dies down and looks to Hailey for forgiveness.

"I'm sorry, you know I had to do it," He chuckles slightly at her pout. His focus was completely on her as she stared straight ahead once more, too freaked out to look anywhere else. Especially down.

"This is so ridiculous, I'm too scared to even look down," She admits with a shaky tone and a deep breath.

Oscar slightly moves closer to her. She turns to look up at him. He shrugs, "I mean, you could just look at m—"

She groans playfully with a roll of her eyes, "Oh my goodness."

She looks away as he laughs at her response. "There's gotta be something to distract you from the scary depths below, yeah?"

She sighs. Then shrugs.

"Like what?"

A beat of silence goes by. Then another one.

Hailey turns to him once more when he doesn't respond. She eyes him as he looks at his hands in his lap, twisting the ring on his finger.

Her eyebrows scrunch up as her eyes narrow in confusion. Why the silence?

She waves her hand in front of him, "Earth to Oscar..."

Oscar looks up to her for a split second. His gaze immediately wanders elsewhere. He looks off to the side, watching the sights below. It's obvious from the outside that his thoughts are running wild, but with what? Hailey couldn't be sure.

A beat of silence goes by. Then another one.

"You gonna help me out or n—"

Hailey's lips are shut by a force she had dreamed of for countless nights now. The words she almost let out were useless now. They didn't matter. Nothing mattered.

Nothing mattered right now because Oscar's lips were on her mouth and she had never felt happier to shut up.

Even in shock, Hailey reacted quickly with the adrenaline from the emotion. She immediately returned the action as their lips moved in sync.

Oscar's hand finds its way to the side of her face and the two feel like their bodies couldn't possibly be closer. He smiles into their deep kisses and Hailey can't help but do the same.

They simultaneously pull away to catch a breath and their faces are completely flushed as they look at each other. Hailey can hear nothing but the sound of their heavy breaths as they try to catch them. She sees her lipstick stains on him and grins. Her thumb brushes softly across his bottom lip to wipe it off, but his lips are immediately on hers again.

Something in the atmosphere automatically clicked as they moved together, as if a million fireworks were going off and nothing existed in the world except for them.

Suddenly the Ferris wheel was out of mind. Their friends, the boardwalk, the scary look down from their height; all of it was gone. All that Hailey could think about was Oscar's lips on hers and the way his hands roamed around her figure. How perfect she felt in the moment after wrapping her arms around his neck and feeling his small smirk.

Their lips part but the distance between them doesn't. Barely an inch of space lies between their mouths.

"Was that a good enough distraction?"

Hailey uncontrollably smiles brightly up at him. She nods slowly while licking her lips. She grasps his chin in her hand and pulls his lips back down to hers.

And in that moment, they were infinite.
