5."So, thats what had happened?"

She stumbled up on her feet quick, when the red light on top of the emergency room switched off. A doctor made his way out of the room with an unreadable expression. The woman tried to peak into the room to see the child she left with the person standing in front of her at that moment.

Her heart shattered when she found him on the bed, as pale as dead, hooked up into various machines and huddled up in the blankets. His eyes were casted down on his lap as he nibbled with the blanket softly.

"I need to talk to you personally."

The doctor spoke out loud. She saw the kid immediately swung his head up, figuring out the doctor must be talking to his aunt. Her heart broke when she saw his doe eyes fill up. They held fear. She flashed him a quick smile and turned to the doctor, agreeing to talk with him in private.

The professional male led her to his chamber and gestured her to sit on the chair in a gentle voice. Her hands rested on her lap, shaking from nervousness. She flinched a bit when she heard the doctor clear his throat but maintained her posture nevertheless.

"Do you have any idea about what had happened to him?"

He asked in a calm yet serious tone. The lady shook her head. She had absolutely zero idea. The child was just fine before going to school. How could his health deteriorate so much within the span of 6 hours? She didn't know but she was extremely worried. The tone of the doctor's voice made it clear that what happened was something which she probably could have prevented. Instead of providing the answer to the confused female, he continued to question her.

"What was the last thing he ate? Was it made by you?"

She bit her lips. Did the boy get food poisoning? An anaphylaxis reaction? It didn't look like that though. It was much worse.

"I d-don't know. He may have ate something from the school canteen."

She said in a low voice, trying her best not to stutter. By that time, she knew it was because of some food he ate and vowed to never let him eat anything other than the food she would cook. At least not when he is not with her.

"We found rat poison in his system which we had to pump out. Someone definitely did it intentionally. So would suggest you to curb about what he eats. Had he been brought a few minutes late, we couldn't have saved him from the severe damage cause by the poison."

He said at once without letting the woman speak. Not that the woman would've spoken anything. She was too shocked. Rat poison? Who could be so cruel to mix rat poison in a 14 year old's food? Who could be such an evil to try to kill sweet, innocent and pure soul like the boy?

The thought of losing the boy brought tears in her eyes. She could never bear it. Jungkook was her vitamin. He was as important to her as water for life.

"I'll be more careful."

The doctor hummed in understanding, as if he wanted her to look after the boy with more attention. Her heart clenched with sorrow everytime she remembered about someone poisoning her boy. He can never do something so wrong to someone to be hated that much.

She remembered his teary eyes. She knew the incident had absolutely freaked him out. She wanted to hold the boy and tell him that he's absolutely fine now. Before she could ask for it, the doctor said it himself.

"He's ready for visitors."

That was all she need to hear. She quickly bowed down to him and sprung to the room. Jungkook flinched when her figure appeared all of a sudden in front of him, panting. She slowed her movements when she realized that the boy was still spooked. She flashed him the brightest smile and made her way towards him.

"Hey Jungkookie."

She asked, wrapping her arms around his torso and gently pulling him towards her. The teen immediately buried his face into her chest clutching the soft fabric of her sweater tightly as if letting it go will pull her away from him forever. She smiled as she found the behaviour cute. But that didn't last long when she heard small sniffles from the boy.

"What's wrong, sweetie?"

She asked in the most gentle and softest voice. She knew the incident had freaked him out, but never predicted him to cry. It shattered her heart even further.

"I'm scared."

He cried, a sob leaving his mouth right after. She held him tighter, trying to reassure him that he was fine. In so many years, fortunately he had never been admitted to a hospital. And she knew that Jungkook was pretty sentimental.

"But you're completely fine now. The good uncle treated you so you need nothing to be scared of."

She patted his back and planted a soft peck on his forehead as she shooed him, his trembling body finally calming down in her down. His sobs dialed down to small sniffles. The lady smiled and pulled out of the hug.

Her heart clenched when she saw his tear filled doe eyes. It hurt. He was still too naive and trusts people easily and is dependent. She needed to be more careful and look after everything he does.

She gently wiped his eyes away and pecked the tip of his nose, earning a soft giggle from the teenager.

"Better?"

She asked with a smile and chuckled when the kid hugged her neck and kissed her cheek.

"All better!"

He intentionally imitated in a childish voice. The one he knew was his aunt's weakness.

The lady cooed at him and ruffled his hair, before getting ready for the real question. The one she's not sure if she should even bring up or not. But she needed to know.

"Jungkookie?"

"Mhm?"

She wrapped her hands around him securely and tight.

"Did you eat today at school?"

"Yeah... Actually-"

He stopped for a bit, looking at the older with innocent eyes.

"Promise me you won't get angry."

Of course she won't. She couldn't. One look at those doe eyes would make you think that he's the purest soul in the planet to ever exist. The way his voice goes tiny also shows clearly that he's afraid of being scolded. The lady mentally sighed and thanked the doctor, for not telling the boy about what had actually happened.

"I wouldn't."

She smiled brightly. The boy relaxed in her arms, after getting the approvement and started explaining how he had forgotten to take money to school and somebody else had to get him food.

"Did she buy it infront of you."

The boy shook his head, making her suspicion grow.

"She brought it to my desk ,saying that she saw me hungry and said that she didn't see me eat anything."

The lady hummed, deep in thought. She didn't want to jump into any conclusion.

They were just kids. It wasn't the kid's fault
It's probably the canteen who messed up.

But who would put rat poison in someone's food?

She felt anger bubble inside of her. Why would the school poison a kid? Was it intentional? What did her child even do? Why would they have rat poison near food?

Her brain couldn't process. She looked back at the kid, who was focused in playing with the cloth of her outfit. She then diverted her attention outside to see that the sun was already down. Night had fallen heavily in the streets, the dark mitigated by the street lights.

"When will it be discharged?"

The boy asked in a soft, tired voice. The lady smiled, though she knew he could see her face as he laid his head on her chest.

"By tomorrow, if you're doing well enough."

"Will I be fine?"

She ran her figures through the locks of his hair, gently kissing his head.

"Of course you will."

A long silence followed. She observed the kid as he stared at nothingness, deep in thought. Suddenly, he looked up at her, his eyes shining.

"You won't be able to spend the night here, would you?"

Her heart shattered even more when she realized that the boy had never spent a night without her. She doesn't even has his favourite chick plushie.

"It's just a day, sweetie."

She said in a soothing tone. The boy looked at her for a few more seconds, before shoving his head right back in her chest.

"I don't think I can fall asleep without you."

He said and clutched his aunt's outfit. The addressed lady sighed mentally. The boy relies too much on her. After all, she was the one to pamper him with all the love and attention. But she couldn't help it. It came naturally to her.

"So I'll only go after you're asleep."

The latter hummed and closed his eyes, wanting to fall asleep while still in the warmth of those two arms around him. The lady smiled, feeling the weight of the child on her increase. She quickly laid him down on the bed, covering him up nicely with the blankets.

Placing a small kiss on his forehead, she took one last look before heading out of hospital, leaving the boy at the hands of the doctors whom owed him his life.
