"Are you nervous?" Her sister-in-law queried from across the couch. Skeeter had finished around two glasses of red wine and four Law & Order: SVU episodes. "Are you nervous about becoming a mom?"

Bambi sighed, absent-mindedly rubbing her stomach even though she was barely showing. "I'm terrified. I want this baby to be a success but I don't want to treat him like he's an album or something because he's not."

"You're having a boy?"

"I. . .think?" Bambi laughed. "Call it mother's intuition?" She got up from the couch and wordlessly carried their dishes to the kitchen, balancing the plates and cup effortlessly in her arms. Automatically, Skeeter followed her into the kitchen. At least her sister-in-law hadn't insisted that she carry the dishes to not stress Bambi; Skeeter knew better.

"Do you and your boyfriend ever talk about kids?" Bambi asked as she started to do the dishes. Wash, soap, rinse, dry, and repeat. Skeeter took a seat on the kitchen island, mindlessly tapping away on her phone.

"I told him about the kid I operated on because he got stuck in a tree and he tells me about the kids in the centers he donates ─ oh." Skeeter chuckled. "You were asking if we ever thought about starting a family. . ." She crinkled her nose and continued. "I don't think so, Bams. Forty and fifty aren't really ideal ages to be starting a family."

"You never know! It could be a miracle baby or babies! I heard multiples run in the Evans family." Chris' mother had a twin sister and said twin sister had a set of triplets.

Skeeter snorted. "Yeah. Or you could have the triplets."

"I'd have four children running around."

"But Dodger will be such a good big brother."

Before Bambi could add that her cats would be good siblings too, she felt a sharp pain pulse through her back. This caused her to drop a plate, the sound of breaking glass echoing through the house.

"Bambi?" Skeeter furrowed her brows, worry coming over her features. She was on her feet. "Are you okay? How do you feel?"

Bambi waved her off. "I'm ─ I'm fine, Skeet. Just ─ ah!" She hurriedly placed her hand on the counter to steady herself, her body curling over as she felt another pain. "Just pregnancy cramps."

"Pregnancy cramps are normal." Skeeter was supporting; she had slung Bambi's arm over her shoulder and they retreated back to the couch. "They're normal if you aren't bleeding."

Bambi shot up. She looked down at her pajamas. A big, red murderous stain was staring back at her. "I'm ─ I'm bleeding? Skeeter?"

"It's okay, sweetie." She cooed. Like a mother cub, Skeeter gathered Bambi in her arms and stroked her blonde hair. "I called the ambulance. They're on their way."

"But ─ but does this mean ─ "

"No, no, no. We don't know anything yet. It's best not to assume."

Bambi nodded tearfully, laying her head on Skeeter's shoulder.

Deep down, Skeeter's medical instincts already had formed a clear picture of what exactly was going on.

"Skeeter!"

"Chris, hi."

"Skeeter, what the fuck is going on?!"

"First off, you need to ─ "

"Don't tell me to calm down!" He shook his head, running a hand through his hair. "I had Diane drive to the hospital like a maniac because you won't tell me anything over text! Where's Bambi? Is she okay? Did we ─ did we lose ─ " Chris paused when his older sister had failed to meet his gaze and bit her lip.

Shit.

Chris gulped, swallowing the tears down. He couldn't lose it in the middle of the hospital. "How? How could I let this happen? Was it because of me?"

Shit. How was his wife feeling in all of this?

"Chris," Skeeter reached her hand out but retracted it once she saw her brother wince at it. "These things just happen."

He sighed. "But why did it have to happen to us?"

After thanking his sister and a parting kiss on the cheek, Chris joined Bambi inside a hospital room and they both cried at their loss.
