Chapter 4
When the voice returns, it will probably make roughly twenty minutes since anyone has spoken. Amy sits rocking on the floor beside the cube; Lily and Bethany sit beside each other with their heads touching; and the rest of us are traumatized.
"Attention, watchers," the voice says. "Due to Lily's decision to save her sister's life and end Eddie's life, Amy has now been made loveless. She no longer has a loved one to play for, or fight for, and is rendered loveless from this moment on. After each round, any loveless that remain will have to face the fate of the watchers. Amy, you must now walk over to the stand against the wall and lift up the box."
Amy rubs her nose as she lifts herself to her feet and wanders over aimlessly to the white box hoisted up on a stand. She lifts it up and drops it to the floor, underneath it is an object that resembles a hand gun.
"Amy, you now have a very important decision to make. As another player has taken your loved one from you, you now get the chance to take revenge. The pistol you now hold in your hand contains one bullet. You have two choices. You can choose to sacrifice yourself and in doing so will grant one watcher a pass to the final round. Or, you can choose for yourself to have a pass to the final round and in doing so you will have to sacrifice the life of one watcher. If you do not make a decision then a random device will be activated among the watchers and someone will die. Someone has taken your loved one from you, do you have the guts to take someone's loved one from them? You have one minute to choose."
"Hold up a second!" a voice booms from a bench behind me, a voice that sounds like Jake's. "If she kills one of us, then won't their loved one be loveless? What happens then?"
"I'm not killing anybody," Amy says as she stares at the pistol in her hand. "I am not a murderer."
"It's for your own life," Brendon shouts. "You're a good person, you don't deserve to die. Choose him." Brendon points towards Jake.
"Me?" Jake snorts. "I'm the only one speaking the damn truth! The girl wants to shoot herself, let her shoot herself."
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Brendon fires at him. "She's young, got her whole life ahead of her. What do you have?"
"If we're talking about sacrifices then why don't you volunteer."
"Because my daughter would be an orphan, that's why."
I stare at the clock on the wall which has just reached twenty seconds. I sigh as the two of them continue to argue behind me, they're missing the bigger picture. This isn't about sacrifice, this is about choice. Whatever we say can't change the mind of Amy, we can't choose who dies and who lives, only she can. To be on that stand, we would all have to lose our loved one, and none of us can comprehend the emotional state of mind we would be in because we haven't yet. If it had been Lotan in that cube, if it had been him that was lying dead on the floor, then I wouldn't want to live either. But also, I would imagine myself to be angry. And I think the anger and rage would outweigh the numbness, and being in that final would be the only step close enough to getting revenge for him. I hope I won't ever have to be in Amy's situation, but right now I can't even think past the next few seconds.
The clock hits zero.
"I choose to die," Amy shouts.
"Amy, you have chosen to sacrifice yourself. State the name of the watcher you wish to give the final pass to," the voice commands.
"The kid," Amy says. "Louis."
"Of course, she chooses the kid," Jake mutters. "Because we don't matter more than a kid, do we?"
"Dad, stop it," Travis says.
"Thank you!" Rachael shouts.
"Amy, you have chosen for Louis to be given a pass to the final round. You must now seal your decision with the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you for playing."
"I hope you rot in hell you sick fucks!" Amy screams. She lifts the pistol to her head, she begins taking quick breaths, around half a second apart. Her finger curls around the trigger, as she rests the point of the gun into her temple.
And then drops it.
"I can't," she says. "I can't. I can't!" She falls to her knees, rocking back and forth.
"Amy." The voice returns calmly. "As you have chosen Louis as your final pass, his device has now been activated in his spine. You have five seconds to sacrifice yourself or the device in Louis' spine will implode."
"No!" Rachael screams. "You can't do this! He's a child! Please!"
Everyone on the benches stands, our eyes everywhere. We don't know where to look, where to go, what to say. How could anyone place a child in danger? It's all happening so fast, in a few seconds a child could be dead or an innocent woman could be dead and none of it makes sense.
"Five," the voice begins. "Four. Three. Two."
"Lotan!" I cry, feeling his arm go around me as he throws me away from the bench.
"One."
