Chapter 23

RECAP:

"You alright?" I turned around and Trey was at the door. I sat up and shook my head. He sat at the end of my bed.

"Does James run the police station?" I asked.

"Nah, he just used to work there. He was police constable."

"Oh."

"Yeah, why?" He asked. I didn't tell them what James said to me back at the station, I didn't want them to get worked up or worried.

"No reason."

"They loved him down there, he influenced a lot of their decisions. I guess he kinda still does seeing how everyone knew him already." That was true. It's probably how he gets away with so much. No not even so much, but everything he does.

"Mm." Trey left shortly afterwards and I was alone again. I slept briefly but awoke when my door closed.

I turned around and was met by a sight I thought I'd never see. Jake had one of my towels wrapped around his lower body. His hair was free from it's usual low ponytail and was cascading in luscious waves past his shoulders. He smelt good too, like fresh man. I watched him fumble around on the desk and realised he was looking for some cream.

"It's in the suitcase." I croaked. He looked to me and smiled. Oh God. His chest and abs were just looking divine. My lower area throbbed erratically and I moaned.

"You like?" He asked catching me staring. My eyes grew wide and I turned around making him laugh.

He dressed in some shorts and a t-shirt the boys had kindly offered him and got into bed. "You alright?" He asked from behind me.

"Yeah."

"You not hungry? You haven't eaten all day."

"I'm good thanks."

"Okay." I felt him staring at me.

"Yes?" I asked.

"Huh? Um, so you're done with Reuben?"

"For now. I mean it's only temporary. Why are you asking? It's only been a couple hours."

"So does that mean I've got a chance?" I giggled at his stupidity and turned around facing him.

"Maybe." I smiled.

END OF RECAP

I woke up to Jake's arm around me and yeah I liked it but I'm not one of them fast girls that hop out of a relationship and then jump into the next one a day later if you get what I mean. Pulling the quilt off me, I shuffled slightly and Jake grunted, pulling me into him.

"It's not time to get out of bed yet." He grumbled, his eyes still closed. I giggled.

"I need to go wee Jake."

"You can't hold it for like another hour?" he asked.

"Another hour? When you're pregnant, you can't hold anything honey." I replied in an American accent.

When I exited the bathroom, I met Sean on the landing.

"Your boyfriend still here?" he asked, rubbing his eye.

"He's not my boyfriend." I corrected him swiftly.

"Well he seems like he wants to be."

"How do you mean?"

"He was bare asking what type of boyfriends you've had and what type of things you like doing and shit." He yawned.

"Oh." was all I said.

"D'you like him?"

"We're just friends."

"That's not what I asked." he raised his eyebrow.

"No." I crossed my arms.

"Okay, chill girl." He put his arms up defensively.

"Why you awake anyway?" I asked.

"Got work remember?"

"Oh yeah." We stood there awkwardly for a second or two.

"I'm glad you're back home you know." He smiled sheepishly and I mirrored his smile.

"So am I." I replied.

"Aww." he cooed hugging me.

"I was mad upset when you went to go live with Reuben."

"You were?"

"Yeah man. Any guy would be upset if their little sister went to go live with next man. But I didn't wanna say anything cos I didn't wanna upset you." He scratched the back of his head and looked down at me nervously. That made sense.

"I'm sorry." I sighed.

"For what?" he asked confused.

"Everything. Going to live with Reuben, staying with James and Patrice, just everything that happened that was my fault." I sighed again, tears clouding my vision.

"Nah nothing's your fault. Don't even try blame anything on yourself. I don't want you to think you're responsible for everything that's happened cos you're not, okay?" he hugged me briefly. I nodded.

"Good. Now go back to sleep, it's too early for you to be awake." He walked into the bathroom.

Lying in my bed, I tossed and turned continuously, thoughts of James fluttered through my mind causing me to stay awake.

"What's wrong?" Asked Jake.

"You're still awake?"

"Can't really sleep when you're moving around so much." He laughed.

"Oh sorry." I apologized, lying on my back.

"It's okay. So, what's wrong?" He repeated. I shrugged.

"James?" He guessed. I nodded. He sighed and faced me.

"You won't have to worry about him much longer."

"What'd you mean?" I asked. He smiled.

"Don't worry. Get some rest." He turned away.

"Jake, what do you mean?" I repeated, sounding out every word. He laughed.

"Don't worry about it, I'm going back to sleep now."

"Nah Jake, you can't leave me like that tell me." I sat up.

"Jake. Jake." I called. I looked over his shoulder.

"The fuck?" This boy was really asleep. I sighed and lay back down.

We got up around 11:00. Jake and I were currently in the living room watching T.V. Jake was still hiding from me what he was talking about.

"Shanae, it's not that deep."

"It is! I wanna know what it is you're planning on doing."

"Nothing." he sighed. I huffed and turned away from him. I could feel him staring but I refused to give him my attention.

"Shanae. Shanae." he kept calling me but I ignored him.

"Sam. Shanae." he tried again. I felt lips on my cheek and I looked at him. I turned back to the T.V and felt lips on my neck.

"Woah, what you doing?" I spun around to face him. He smiled.

"Finally I got your attention." he laughed. I raised an eyebrow.

"Are you mad at me?" He asked. I thought for a while.

"No. I don't know. Yes. I don't think so." I was just feeling too much and I didn't know what emotion I could pinpoint at this time.

"So is that a yes or a no?" He asked. I shrugged.

"A no, I guess." I answered quietly. He nodded. He placed his hand on my large stomach.

"You bought anything for my niece or nephew in there?" He looked at me. I shook my head.

"Not really. No." I admitted.

"What? Why not?"

"Reuben kept me in the flat and I wasn't allowed out so we never went baby shopping."

"Did you have a baby shower?" he asked.

"No."

"How could you not have a baby shower?"

"Reuben didn't want me to and-"

"This guy." he sighed.

"Sounds bad, dunnit?"

"Yeah." He looked at me and stood up.

"Let's go." He smiled.

"Go where?"

"Uh, shopping for the baby, duh."

"Oh. No, I can't."

"What'd you mean?"

"I dunno. I always thought I'd go with Reuben and I don't want you spending any money on the baby."

"Why not?"

"Cos you're not the dad."

"So? The dad clearly didn't want to go, so I will." He smiled.

"Aww." Sean cooed, standing by the living room door. I screwed him.

"Shut up Sean." I cut my eyes. He laughed.

"If you're taking her baby shopping, I don't want you to pay for everything so here." He got out his wallet and gave Jake a bundle of notes. They seemed to be only £50 and £20 notes. I looked up at him.

"Where'd you get that money Sean?" I asked.

"I work, duh."

"Yeah but that's so much cash to be walking around with all cas."

"Don't worry about where my extra money is coming from. Let's just say someone owed me and leave it there." He tied his purple tie.

"Aren't you late for work?" I asked.

"Mm it don't really matter what time I show up." He said. Trey came down and smiled.

"Mornin'." He looked from me to Jake. I waved.

"Where's Sean getting all this money from?" I asked. He looked at Sean and shrugged.

"That's his business." He sat down. I stood up.

"Kay, well I'm going out with Jake in a bit. We shouldn't be too long." I made my way back upstairs and took a shower before slipping into some grey trackies and my black air forces. I tied my hair into a messy bun and went back downstairs.

We drove to the Tandem Centre in Colliers Wood and walked to Mothercare.

When we got there, we immediately got a lot of stares. I expected it since I was a short little girl with a huge belly and Jake was this tall tan guy smiling his arse off as we walked in. We made our way to the cribs.

There was this dark brown wood cot that I liked. It was £120 and that's when I realised just how expensive having a baby really was.

"Where's all this stuff going? Are you going to be staying with Reuben or your brothers?" Jake asked. That was a good question. I thought briefly.

"Back at my brothers. I don't want to live in that small flat with the baby." I decided. He nodded.

"You know what you're having?"

"No. I don't want to know yet."

"Well when do you want to know?"

"When I give birth." I replied. He nodded as we walked over to the clothes. Jake picked up these Converse baby booties. He grinned, turning to me.

"Look at how tiny they are." He cooed. I laughed.

"We can get them." I smiled. All the while we were shopping, I couldn't help but feel a little bit guilty that I wasn't doing this shopping with Reuben.

"You okay?" Jake asked, standing in front of me.

"Uh, yeah. Yeah I'm good." I smiled weakly.

"What's wrong?" He frowned. I sighed.

"I feel...wrong."

"Wrong?"

"Yeah. Like I shouldn't be doing this; baby shopping with you. I feel like I should be doing this with Reuben, not you." I looked up at him, hesitant. He looked down at me.

"That makes sense." he shrugged. "But I want to do this with you. Murder, I mean Reuben isn't here to do it, so I'll do it instead." He continued picking out clothes. I picked out a black pushchair that doubled as a pram, along with a car seat. We continued shopping and once I was sure we had enough stuff, I allowed him to pay for everything. We took everything back to the car and I sat in, completely shattered. My feet were all swollen and hurting, and my back hurt, not to mention I had persistent heartburn.

We drove home in silence as I started to doze off.

"Shanae. Shanae." My name being called woke me from my short nap. Jake placed his hand on my knee.

"You're home." He smiled. I blinked and groaned.

"Your car is comfortable." I mumbled, shifting my position. He let out a hollow laugh.

"Come on, your brothers are waiting for you." He nudged me gently and got out of the car. He opened the door for me and I groaned again. I got out of the car slowly, trudging to the front door as Jake collected some of the shopping from the car. All I wanted to do was sleep, so I didn't even offer to help Jake with the shopping, I just told the boys to go help while I went upstairs.

I lay on my bed immediately, not even bothering to take off my trainers. Jake came in soon after. He stayed for a bit, putting the cot together as the boys helped.

"You want anything to eat before you go bed again? You haven't eaten a thing since breakfast."

"I'm good." I whispered.

"Okay, um, I'm gonna head off home now. My mum's been texting me all day." He laughed lightly. I turned on the bed till I was on my back. I sat up.

"Tell her I said hi." I smiled.

"Sure. She'll be happy to hear from you."

"She knows who I am?" I furrowed my brows.

"Er, yeah. I kinda told her everything about you." He admitted, laughing nervously.

"For real?"

"Yeah." He looked up at me sheepishly. "I knew we would be friends and I used to think about you a lot and me and my mum are close so we talk about a lot." he rambled. I nodded.

"Rah. Well, okay." I was a bit shocked.

"Sorry."

"Nah it's okay. Do your sisters know about me too?"

"Well they know of you, they don't know about James or Reuben or none of that stuff. They just know I talk to you."

"Oh. Maybe I'll come round and meet them in person one day." I suggested.

"Sure. Just let me know when you're free and I'll come pick you up." He nodded.

"Cool."

"Yeah. Well, I should get going." He stood up.

"Okay, I'll see you later."

"Later."

"Oh, and thanks for everything you bought for the baby today, that was really really sweet and thoughtful of you."

"No problem b." He smirked. I stood up and hugged him. He slowly wrapped his arms around me and kissed my forehead as we pulled away from each other. He kneeled down to my stomach and placed his hands on either side.

"Goodnight to you too little one." he said to my belly. "Don't be giving your mum too much trouble while she's sleeping." he smiled. I laughed, throwing my head back. I felt slight pressure on my belly but dismissed it. "Woah." Jake whispered. I looked down.

"What?" I frowned. He looked up at me smiling.

"The baby... kicked." He opened his eyes wide.

"What? For real?" I asked. He nodded and I lifted up my top. "Talk to him again."

"Uh what's good munchkin." He stuttered. I looked at my stomach and saw a bump forming as the baby moved. I gasped and Jake laughed.

"Oh my days!" I exclaimed. "Yo, that is the weirdest sensation ever! Trey, Sean you have to come and see this!" I shouted. I waited for them to come into the room before Jake spoke again.

"You gonna dance for your uncle or nah?" He said. The baby moved and I grinned.

" Did you guys see that!?" I exclaimed happily. I pressed on different parts of my stomach and the baby would kick back everytime. I laughed. I smiled as I watched my brothers looking on smiling and taking turns to press on my belly for the baby to kick back. At that moment I began to get excited for my baby to come.
