Chapter Seven
Joey's POV
Today is the first day of Lyric's project. She's practically ricocheting against the walls, waiting for the time to open the doors of the apartment building.
"Sus?" Susanna is standing against the nearby wall, a vacant look in her eyes. "Babe, you okay?"
"Huh?" She blinks a few times and then looks at me, still not looking totally focused. She swallows a lump in her throat, forcing a smile. "Hey, Joseph."
"Susanna? Are you okay?" I ask, she never, and I mean NEVER EVER calls me Joseph. Something isn't right here. And I haven't got the faintest clue what that is. I'm worried about my love. Woah. Did I just admit that I loved Susanna?
Before I can give that much more thought, James comes and winks at Lyric in passing. "It's time!"
I go over with James and together we open the doors and welcome the people inside. There are people of all ages, races, and sizes. One in particular is a boy that looks to be about 10 with faded and ragged clothes, dirty and a tired, hungry look in his sunken in face. My heart goes out to these people. And this isn't in some third world country. This is right here in my own back door of the United States of America.
"It's humbling." Susanna whispers from beside me. She looks more like her normal self now. She smiles a teary eyed smile. "I wish I could help everyone like that."
I lean over stroking her hair back, kissing her cheek. "We are a helping some. It'll spread like wildfire soon."
Susanna smiles, nodding with confidence. "You know what, Joey. Your right. What others think isn't important as long as I'm doing God's will." She leans up and kisses my cheek and then is gone, helping get food to the lines of people.
Okay not really sure what that was about, but I'm just glad to see my Susanna smiling. After a whirlwind day we have went through nearly all of the food that local churches and businesses donated. Susanna and I perform a few songs, and then a local preacher comes in and presents the gospel to everyone.
By the end, when the preacher is giving an altar call the little boy that caught my eye, makes his way to the preacher. "I want Jesus." He might be like twelve, at the most. Looks younger, way younger though.
There were lots of tears. Not gonna lie, some of those came from my eyes too. About five hours later, we are cleaning up. Susanna kind of wilts into a nearby chair letting out a sharp breath. I run to her side, "Sus. What's wrong?" I pat her arm, and Lyric and James are on her other side.
"My sugar dropped. We were so busy I didn't stop to eat." She blinks a few times, her whole body looking weak.
"Hold on." Lyric runs towards a table nearby. "Here's a cupcake. It was on our peanut free table. We had it especially for people with peanut allergies."
"Thanks." Susanna murmurs as she takes a slow bite, then another. Her eyes grow wide. "Oh no. God help..."
James looks Susanna in the eyes. "What's wrong?"
Susanna opens her mouth a few times to speak but can't. Her mouth looks like it's forming a b word, she makes a motion with her hands.
"Bag. She needs her bag. Her purse where is it?" Lyric panics.
"I got it." I pass the bag and put it in my girlfriend's lap. She makes a motion at her throat, struggling to swallow.
"She's having an allergic reaction." James says. He sniffs the cupcake. "There is peanuts in that cupcake, they were ground up to powder." He digs through her purse, meanwhile explaining his mom's allergy to peanuts, so that's why he's the only person not panicking. "Got it." He pulls out a long tube thing, which he opens. "Joey, hold her hand. Lyric, you get the other one. Sus. Bear with me." She nods. And he stabs this huge needle into her thigh area. We rush her to the doctor's office.
About fifteen minutes later the doctor returns wiping his brow. He locks eyes on James. "Someone knew what they were doing. You must be James. Susanna told me how you went to work without panic. She's okay now. A little weak, but that's to be expected after what she's been through. She hadn't come in contact with peanuts like that for a long time, she's always careful, she told me, and usually can smell it at a distant. But praise God, the most important thing is that she is okay now. Give us just a few more minutes."
The doctor retreats back into the swinging doors, and James and Lyric go to a vending machine around the corner. I bow my head, shoulders shaking and I let the tears fall. "Thank you God for protecting Susanna. Lord, I don't know what I would do without her. God, I love her. I love Susanna. This may sound selfish... but please let her return my feelings. I don't want to spend my life without her in it."
