Chapter 10
Preston
I knocked on Avery's door. It was a small green and white house. I hopped from foot to foot nervously. Yes, I'm impatient. I ran my hand through my hair and fiddled with my Toronto Maple Leaves jersey. I bit my lip and raised my hand to knock again. As I did so, a shiver ran down my spine. Someone was watching me.
Just then, the door flew open. I gasped and stepped backwards in surprise. Avery laughed and gave me a hug. I shoved her shoulder gently.
"You were watching me, weren't you?" I asked. Avery nodded. "Yeah, I wanted to see if you'd notice." She giggled. I sighed, but couldn't help smiling.
Avery smiled back and slipped her hand into mine. I gave her fingers a gentle squeeze. My heart sped up as she squeezed back.
"Come on," I murmured. The warm June sun gave Avery a glowing golden halo. We strolled around the park, sometimes talking of nothing, sometimes talking of everything. I turned my head towards the summer light. "Hey, Avery?" I turned to her and lifted her chin up with my free hand.
"Yeah?" Her gray-blue eyes met mine. I kissed her gently. "I have a present for you." She smiled. "What?" The glint in her eyes made me blush. Avery leaned up to my ear and whispered; "You've already given me everything I've ever wanted." Heat rose even faster to my face, but for a different reason.
"Here," I said softly, handing her a golden heart shaped locket. "You've stolen my heart, you might as well keep it safe." I fastened the necklace around my girlfriend's neck. "I love you." Avery stared at it, tears gathering at the edge of her eyes. I watched her carefully. Then she threw her arms around my neck and pressed her cheek to mine. I rocked her gently, holding her tight. "I love you too, Preston. More than anything." My heart soared.
Avery's legs tightened around my waist. I slipped my arm under her to hold her up. Avery lifted her head off my shoulder. I smiled at her. She smiled shyly, blushing, and placed her forehead on mine.
"We'll be together forever, won't we Preston?" She asked.
I stared into her eyes. "Even after the world ends." I promised.
I'm going to keep that promise, even if it's the last thing I do.
