Spirit Up Hospital,
Manik and Nandini were outside Navya's cabin as she was busy with a patient. After five minutes they were called inside.
Navya: Hi guys!
She gets up and side-hugs them. They all settled down, and both Manik and Nandini had different feelings. Manik was feeling awkward while on the other hand, Nandini was feeling nervous.
Navya: Guys let me clear this up first I'm your doctor so you both don’t have to be uncomfortable with me. Be frank, relaxed, and comfortable.
Both nodded at her.
Navya: Alright, so Nandini let me give you a few pointers first. You need to look after yourself more. I'll offer you a list of foods that are off-limits to pregnant women. You should exercise and be extra cautious during the first trimester because the risk of miscarriage is high. I'll do some tests and advise you on what to eat more and what not to, and yes most importantly do not carry heavy objects. Yes, above all, make an effort to maintain your happiness. The happier and healthier you are, the better off your unborn child will be. Indeed, you will experience nausea from time to time, particularly in the morning. You may also experience dizziness. There's no need to worry it's all common and normal during this time.
Nandini: Navya I can work right???
Navya: Of course, even Nevertheless, we would prefer that women in this period require minimal labor, it supports your continued activity.
Nandini: Okay.
Navya: Alright, Nandini Thus, a few tests must now be carried out. This is the list, which you can review once. Please excuse me while I finish this quick operation.
They both nodded at her and left her cabin. It took a whole 1 hour to conduct all the tests. The nurse asked them to wait for half an hour for the reports to come. After half an hour nurse gave the reports to her and asked them to go to Navya’s cabin as she was free now. They both enter and Nandini gives her the reports.
Navya: There are just a few things that need to be taken care of, nothing to worry about. I'll write you an order for calcium supplements and a variety of vitamins. To prepare your body to carry the baby, you will need to take them. We won't know for sure for a while, but as the baby grows, it will gradually require more nutrients from your body, which is when you will start to feel weak. Therefore, you need to take these vitamins and calcium to avoid that circumstance. In addition, I'm prescribing you a couple of more medications that will assist you when you experience morning sickness.
Nandini: I will take care of it.
Navya: For you this is it but there are a few things I want to discuss with Manik.
Manik: With me???
Navya: Ya there are many which you need your attention. You should also know about it and take care of it.
Nandini: Navya, you already informed me of all the things if there is anything else you can say that to me I'll take care of it.
Navya: Nandini this period is very precious for both of you. He should also know about it.
Manik: Nandini let her be.
Navya: Alright, Manik I've given her a list of foodstuffs that are off-limits to a pregnant lady. She needed to exercise more caution throughout the first trimester due to the increased risk of miscarriage. She can't exert herself. I gave her a list it what to eat and what not to eat after doing some tests. Keep her away from carrying bulky items. Indeed, the most crucial thing to do is to make her as happy as you can. The baby's health will improve in proportion to her happiness and well-being.
Manik: Two days ago, she vomited at night too badly.
Navya: She may have nausea, particularly in the morning, and dizziness occasionally. However, none of these symptoms should be concerning as they are all perfectly typical throughout pregnancy. Although it usually begins in the second trimester and gets worse until the last trimester, in Nandini's case, the morning sickness began in the first trimester alone. As a result, you should psychologically prepare yourself for it because it will only get worse. She can't take any specific medication to assist her in lowering it.
Manik: Okay!!!
Navya: Alright, Thus, going ahead It's wonderful to know that her blood pressure, sugar level, hemoglobin, pulse rate, and other vital signs are all within normal range. It's nice that everything falls inside the allowed range. Regarding the food, I've tested her a few times, and it seems like she has no allergies. However, Manik, do you have a food allergy? I'm asking you this because there's a potential the baby may be allergic to something if one of the parents is. It is therefore advised that the mother refrain from eating that particular food item since she too may experience an allergic reaction.
Manik: Yes, I'm allergic to peanuts and soybeans.
Navya: It's good that you are aware of this because, in certain situations, people are unaware that they have an allergy. Thus, I would advise Nandini to avoid eating anything that has peanuts or soybeans in it. The possibility of experiencing an allergic reaction is high.
Nandini: I will take care of it.
Navya: Okay now let’s discuss a topic that may feel awkward or uncomfortable for some couples – intimacy and intercourse during pregnancy.
Manik shifted in his seat, casting a glance at Nandini, who avoided his gaze, her cheeks tinged with a faint blush.
Navya: I know guys it’s awkward for you both to discuss it with me but as your doctor, I need to ensure that both of you are informed and prepared. Intercourse during pregnancy is generally safe, but there are certain precautions to keep in mind.
Manik cleared his throat, his discomfort was palpable. "Um, yeah, of course," he mumbled, his eyes darting around the room.
Nandini fidgeted with her hands, her gaze fixed on the floor. "Right," she murmured, her voice barely audible.
Navya sensed their unease and decided to approach the topic with extra sensitivity.
"It's perfectly normal to feel a bit awkward discussing intimate matters," she reassured them. "But please know that I'm here to provide guidance and support in a judgment-free environment."
Manik and Nandini exchanged a hesitant glance. They know that there is no need to discuss it but still, they had to as they don’t have any excuse to deny it.
"Firstly," Navya began, her voice gentle yet confident, "communication is key. Talk openly with each other about any concerns or discomforts you may have. It's important to be on the same page and establish a sense of trust and understanding."
Manik nodded, his expression serious as he listened silently.
"During pregnancy, certain positions may become uncomfortable, especially as the baby grows," Navya continued, keeping her tone neutral. "Experiment with different positions to find what works best for both of you and prioritize Nandini's comfort and well-being."
Nandini nodded in agreement, her cheeks still flushed with embarrassment.
"Be gentle and take things slow. Avoid any vigorous thrusting or sudden movements that could cause discomfort or harm. And remember, if you experience any pain, bleeding, or unusual discharge, stop immediately and consult me or seek medical attention." Navya said carefully.
Manik and Nandini nodded looking here and there.
"Lastly," Navya said, her tone softening, "remember that intimacy goes beyond just intercourse. Take the time to connect emotionally and physically through cuddling, kissing, and other forms of affection. It's important to nurture your bond as a couple during this special time. So that’s it for today if there is any problem, I’m always there for you guys." Both Manik and Nandini nodded and left from there not before thanking her.
As Manik and Nandini settled into the car for the journey home from their appointment with Navya, a palpable tension hung in the air, filling the space between them with an uncomfortable silence. The engine's hum accentuated the awkwardness, each passing moment stretching the silence further.
Manik glanced out of the window, his mind swirling with thoughts yet unable to break the silence. Nandini, seated beside him, fidgeted with the hem of her dress, her gaze fixed on her lap as she struggled to find the right words to dispel the awkwardness.
