***
Despite performing for years, Kabir still felt nervous whenever he was on stage. However, this habit of his annoyed the heck out of Ayesha who was currently dealing with a wardrobe mishap.
"Stop fidgeting," Ayesha scolded. She then added just to annoy him. "Bhaiyya!"
"Stop that," he said. "You haven't called me that since we were kids."
"Then stop acting like one," Ayesha replied as she swatted his arm. "I can't fix this chain on you if you keep moving around."
"Sorry yaar," he apologized. "I'm just nervous."
"When aren't you?" Ayesha questioned.
A knock on the door pulled them out of their causual banter.
"How's my two older siblings doing?" Arjun asked, announcing his presence.
"If you're wondering if I had killed him yet," Ayesha replied. "The answer is no. However, I am very tempted to if he doesn't stop moving around."
"I said sorry na?" Kabir retorted.
"Your sorry is invalid until you stop tapping your feet!" Ayesha chastised. "For goodness sake Kabir, why are you so nervous?"
"I haven't performed in concert for a very long time," Kabir answered.
"And he hasn't performed in front of a crush since high school," Arjun added.
"Thank you for the unnecessary comments," Kabir said, sarcastically.
"If you wanted to impress her," Ayesha stated. "You should have done it a long time ago."
"And who am I supposed to be impressing?" Kabir asked.
"Raina," the two of them said, simultaneously.
Kabir rolled his eyes. There was then a rhythmic tap on the door and before the door could open, they knew already knew it was Sunny.
"Ready to go?" Sunny asked to no one in particular, he just needed an answer.
"Not yet," Ayesha responded as she tried to fix that one stray metal chain onto Kabir's belt. "There's a wardrobe malfunction. Call mom or Di, I don't think I can fix this."
"Ok," Sunny said as he ducked behind the door. After a split second, he reappeared. "There's also a Dr. Raina Jaietly and family waiting at the green room, should I send them in?"
"Why did you leave them there?" Kabir scolded Sunny. "Send them in, duffer."
"Well," Sunny defended. "I don't know if you're naked or fully dressed."
"Would I let your wife in if I weren't wearing anything?" Kabir retorted.
"I don't know," Sunny said. "You guys are siblings."
"Sunny!" Ayesha huffed. "Stop talking and go!"
"Fine," he replied as disappeared from their sights.
"Can't I just leave the chain hanging?" Ayesha asked. "There's really nothing I can do about it."
"It was fine the other day," Kabir muttered.
"A lot of things were also fine the other day," Ayesha told him. "Like my patience. Only mom can figure this thing out now."
"And you call yourself a fashion designer," Kabir mocked.
"Listen here," Ayesha threatened. "You're walking on a really thin line, right now..."
However, before Ayesha could complete her sentence, there was a knock on the door.
"Come in," Arjun answered on everyone's behalf.
Raina was the first to peek out from behind the door, followed by her mother.
"Hey Raina!" Kabir called out. "Hi Soniaji!"
Raina sheepishly waved back as she push the door further open to reveal a third person, her grandmother.
"Naani (Maternal grandmother)!" Kabir exclaimed, excited. He excused himself from Ayesha and went up to her.
"Arre wah (Oh wow)," she said. "Tu toh rockstar lag rahe ho (You look like a rockstar)."
"Thanks," he replied.
"I'm very upset with you Kabir," Sonia told him.
"Why?" Kabir cowered. "Maine kya kiya (What did I do)?"
"You actually sold my house," Sonia answered. "But I'm glad to know that the next owner will be taking very good care of it so, I'm going to let you off the hook this time."
"Oh thank goodness," Kabir sighed in relief.
Arjun then cleared his throat, reminding Kabir that there are more people in the room.
"Oh haan (right)," Kabir said. "This is my choti behen (younger sister), Ayesha, and my chota bhai (younger brother), Arjun. Ayesha and Arjun, this is Raina's mom and naani (maternal grandmother)."
The four of them exchanged pleasantries as Kabir quietly made his way to Raina.
"Hey doctorji," he said. "You're being awfully quiet."
"It's nothing," she replied. "Just taking everything in. I appreciate you doing this for my family."
"It's no big deal," he smirked. "After all, I can't let a fan down."
"Your fan?" Raina questioned. "Who said I was your fan?"
"Not you," he retorted. "Naani (maternal grandmother)! But I'm pretty sure I can turn you into one, just you wait till after the show."
"I'm sure you can," she said as she rolled her eyes at him.
Kabir smiled. He was going to miss having these moments with Raina.
"Kabir," she started. However, the moment he hmm-ed in reply, she decided to change her initial subject.
"You look good," she complimented.
"It's all thanks to you," he answered. "The show is about to start. Let me get someone to escort you to your seats."
"Kabir!" Ayesha shouted when she saw him heading to the door. "Where are you going?!"
"I'm just going to get someone to escort Raina and her family to their seats," he replied.
"I'll do it," Arjun volunteered. "I'm headed there too. Since mom is on her way here, I'm pretty sure you two wouldn't kill each other."
Kabir and Ayesha simultaneously rolled their eyes at him.
"Fine," Kabir said. "Just go."
Arjun showed Raina and her family out and it was back to just Ayesha and Kabir.
Ayesha stared at Kabir.
"What?" Kabir asked.
"What?" Ayesha reiterated.
"You have that look," he told her.
"What look?" Ayesha questioned. "This is how I normally look."
Kabir sighed. He knew there must be something up with his sister.
At that moment, Seema walked in.
"Kya hua (What happened)?" Seema asked. "Arjun said there was an issue."
"Haan (Right)," Ayesha responded. "The chains on his pants won't hook."
Seema walked over and inspected the chains.
"You got the chain on the wrong side," she told Ayesha as fixed the 'problematic' chain.
Ayesha face-palmed herself.
"Thanks mom," Kabir said as he snickered.
"You're welcome," she answered. "Ayesha, Sunny's asking for you. He's near the stage."
Ayesha nodded and went out.
"Let me take a good look at you," Seema said as she inspected her son. She straightened out his clothes and smiled at him. "I'm so proud of you, you know?"
"I know," Kabir replied.
"Your father too," she continued.
"Mom," he spoke. "Ravi Desai's opinion doesn't bother me."
"I know but I meant your real father," she told him. "Kabir, there's something I need to tell you."
***
Raina sat at her box as she watched the stage. Right next to her was her mother.
"Being friends with a rockstar sure has it's perks," Sonia told her daughter.
Raina smiled.
"Why did you think I took up the assignment in the first place?" Raina joked.
Sonia observed her daughter.
"I know you have this strict rule about not dating your patient but I think you're way pass that stage," she remarked. Raina opened her mouth to counter but Sonia was faster. "Don't you dare to deny it, I'm your mother. I know you. And I also knew that boy was trouble from the first time I laid eyes on him."
"Mom," Raina sighed. "Fine, I am attracted to him but that doesn't mean anything."
"Kyun (Why)?!" Sonia asked, a bit louder than Raina was comfortable with.
"Shh..." Raina hushed her mother. "Are you trying to get me killed? Have you seen how vicious fan girls can be?"
"So," Sonia gave her daughter a knowing look. "You're afraid of fan girls?"
"No," Raina replied. "If, just if, ok? I'm not saying I will. If I do eventually end up with... him, things will never be the same again. I won't ever have privacy or the ability to move around freely to do things I want to do. From what I see, there's this need to always act a certain way in public and I don't know if I can do that. I don't want to lose myself to everything."
"Have you had this talk with Kabir?" Sonia asked.
"I...," she fumbled. "Sort of...? We had an agreement my involvement with his treatment was kept secret and he does quite a good job keeping our friendship away from the public. But it will not matter after tomorrow. We're finally going back to London."
"Aren't you going to keep in contact with him?" Sonia questioned.
"Of course I am," Raina stated. "It's just that I don't have to keep looking over my shoulders when I'm back there."
Sonia shrugged.
"But if he tells you he likes you and want you to stay," she tested Raina. "Will you?"
"Mom?" Raina asked. "What are you...?"
The entire arena dimmed and suddenly the guitar intro of Kabir's song started, cutting Raina off.
***
It was almost the end of the show and nothing out of the ordinary has happened. Kabir and Raina both had a weird feeling about tonight as if something was going to happen soon.
Kabir had one more song to sing and everything would be over.
"I want to dedicate this song to everyone who had someone close to them leave or had to leave someone," Kabir said. "I know this is the song everyone has been waiting for, the hit song that's been on the charts ever since it came out. Please enjoy, Channa Mereya."
Acha Chalta Hoon
Duaaon Mein Yaad Rakhna
Kabir could feel his throat starting to constrict and he cleared it before continue singing.
Mere Zikr Ka Zubaan Pe Swaad Rakhna
The music started and Kabir closed his eyes, getting into the feel of the song.
Acha Chalta Hoon
Duaaon Mein Yaad Rakhna
Mere Zikr Ka Zubaan Pe Swaad Rakhna
Dil Ke Sandookon Mein
Mere Ache Kaam Rakhna
Chitthi Taaron Mein Bhi
Mera Tu Salaam Rakhna
Andhera Tera Maine Le Liya
Mera Ujla Sitaara Tere Naam Kiya
Kabir paused for a while for dramatic effects, everyone who was a fan knew that. However, today, it wasn't like that at all. Today, Kabir was going to let go of another person he had tried so hard not to fall in love with but couldn't. This was his goodbye to her. To Raina.
Channa Mereya Mereya
Channa Mereya Mereya
Channa Mereya Mereya Beliya
O Piya...
Channa Mereya Mereya
Channa Mereya Mereya
Channa Mereya Mereya Beliya
O Piya... O... Piya...
Piya... Piya...
O... Piya...
Oooo...
As the music continued, Kabir didn't realized but he had started crying. And to everyone's surprise, the crowd was crying along with him.
Mm.. Mehfil Me Teri Hum Naa Rahe Jo
Gham Toh Nahi Hai, Gham Toh Nahi Hai
Qisse Humare Nazdeekiyon Ke
Kam Toh Nahi Hai, Kam Toh Nahi Hai
Kitni Dafaa Subah Ko Meri
Tere Aangan Mein Baithe Maine Shaam Kiya
Channa Mereya Mereya
Channa Mereya Mereya
Channa Mereya Mereya Beliya
O Piya...
Channa Mereya Mereya
Channa Mereya Mereya
Channa Mereya Mereya Beliya
O Piya... O... Piya...
As the chorus came up, Kabir retreated and his his tear stained face behind the mix stand. He breathes in and out heavily, trying to shake off the pain.
(Channa Mereya Mereya
Channa Mereya Mereya
Channa Mereya Mereya Beliya
O Piya...
Channa Mereya Mereya
Channa Mereya Mereya
Channa Mereya Mereya Beliya
O Piya...)
Kabir takes in one last huff of breath and wipes away his tears with the sleeves of his shirt.
Tere Rukh Se Apna Raasta Mod Ke Chala
Chandan Hoon Main Apni Khushboo
Chodke Chala
Mann Ki Maya Rakh Ke Tere Takiye Tale
Bairagi, Bairagi Ka Sooti Chaula
Odh Ke Chala
(Channa Mereya Mereya
Channa Mereya Mereya
Channa Mereya Mereya Beliya)
O... Piya...
Kabir took a moment to compose himself and smiled to the crowds.
"Thank you so much for tonight!" Kabir shouted into the mic. "I love you guys!"
He bowed to the audience and left the stage.
