"Doctorji!"
The wailing patient throws himself across the desk, trying to reach for his psychiatrist's hand. His psychiatrist, however, reels her hands back just in time, causing him to catch hold of her name plate instead. Dr. Raina Jaitley, it read. She quietly reminds herself to keep her hand under the desk for the rest of the entire session.
"Main ek ladki ke liye tadap raha hoon." (I'm pining after a girl.)
The psychiatrist resisted the urge to roll her eyes at the patient's remarks. Not another one of these flimy idiots. Remember, be professional.
"Acha, (Really)" she replied. "If you don't mind, mujhe batao, yeh ladki kaun hai? Aur aap dono ki beech mein kya hua?" (If you don't mind, can you tell me who is this girl? And what happened between the both of you?)
The patient suddenly stood up, causing her to slightly jerk backwards in shock.
"Doctoji," he replied with a dramatic flair. "Woh ladki nahi hai... Woh ek angel hai, angel... Jo iss waqt mere samne baithe hai." (She's not a girl... She's an angel, angel... Who is sitring in front of me right now.) He gestured at her.
What the...?
Raina knew she was beautiful, despite hiding behind her nerdy glasses. Dark brown hair, doe-eyed and a killer smile, her friends back in London used to joke about men making appointments and faking mental issues just meet to her. Never in her lifetime would she ever imagine it actually happening.
Raina gave the man a forced smile as she discreetly open the secret drawer below her desk. She pulled out a ring and slipped it on her ring finger before folding her hands on the desk. The ring glistened in the sunlight.
"Dekho (You see)," she told him, with a fake sympathetic expression. "I hope aap bura mat manna. Main ek shaadi shuda ladki hoon... Aur main apni husband ko bohot pyaar karti hoon. (I hope you don't feel bad. I'm a married woman... And I love my husband a lot.) I'm sorry."
The patient was taken aback by her response. He had not expected her to be married. Suddenly, he noticed the ring on her finger (which Raina was purposely flaunting). Yeh angoothi kaha se aaya? (Where did the ring come from?)
"Sir, agar aap counselling sessions ki zaroorat hai, (Sir, if you need counselling sessions)" she added, trying her best not to laugh at the man's expression. Instead, she jotted down some notes on the session card. "Maybe, mere boss apko help kar sake." (Maybe, my boss can help you.)
The man was dumbfounded.
"It's ok," he replied. "Main manage kar loonga." (I'll manage)
And with a dejected expression, he excited the office. The moment the office door closed, Raina couldn't help but burst out in laughter. Thank goodness for soundproof offices.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
"Come in," Raina said into the intercom between laughs.
The door opens to reveal her boss, Dr. Malhotra, a bespectacled old man.
"Raina," he said, unable to contain his curiosity. "Why did that guy look more depressed than when he came in?"
"Sir," she replied, trying to control her laughter. "He was trying to hit on me."
"But he looks so depressed," Dr. Malhotra told her. "We're here to help people, not to cause them more mental trauma."
Raina had to laugh at that statement. If only he knew who was the one that's getting traumatized.
"Khair chodo, (Nevermind that)" he continued, waving it off. "How's Sharma's case?"
"It looks like he's finally able to control his alcoholic tendencies now," she replied on a serious note. "His wife said that he hasn't touched the bottle in three weeks."
"That's good," he said. "Keep up the good work."
"Thanks boss," she replied.
Suddenly, Dr Malhotra leaned nearer to Raina and gestured her to do so. She followed, closing the gap between them.
"We're about to bring in a high profile case very soon," he whispered. "Nothing is finalized yet but if it goes through, I want you to take the case."
Needless to say, Raina was shocked. It has been barely a year since she had completed her housemanship and moved to India. She couldn't possibly be ready for a big case, could she?
"Sir," she voiced her concern. "Are you sure you want me to handle this case? I'm very new and I hardly..."
"They want a person who isn't emotionally involved with the patient," he said, cutting her off. "The stakes are extremely high and they don't want to mess it up."
Emotionally involved? High stakes? Who the hell is this guy?
"Who are we talking about sir?" Raina asked, intrigued by this mysterious to-be-patient.
"Have you heard of VKAS?"
Raina shook her head.
"Kabir Varma?"
Raina shook her head once more.
"The only people I know in India are either in this building, my mother, my nani, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and some of their co-stars," she reminded him. "And the Prime Minister."
"What about the President?" Dr. Malhotra asked, jokingly.
Raina rolls her eyes.
"Very funny, boss," she said sarcasticly.
"My point is," Dr. Malhotra continued. "Due to your lack of exposure to all the Indian celebrity gossips, you're the best candidate that we have. You don't have any bias or any malicious intent against Kabir, which makes you a neutral party who can make rational decisions in times when others can't. Furthermore, you did your degree and housemanship in London. It's foreign experience... That's an added advantage, right?"
"For your information," she corrected. "I used to live in London until my mother decided that I had to move back here with her to look after my ailing nani. If not for her, I probably would not even be here. So technically, my time in London doesn't count as foreign experience. My current job is."
Dr. Malhotra puts up his hands in defense.
"Ok," he replied. "Suit yourself. But Raina, give it a thought, woh bechara ko help ki bohot zaroorat hai. (That pitiful person needs a lot of help.) And you might be his only hope. If there's any updates, I'll let you know."
Her boss then left her room, leaving Raina in deep thoughts. That was until the clinic reception knocked on the door with another case in tow.
"Dr Raina, you might want to keep your ring on," the receptionist warned her. "Lagta hai ki woh ek aur despo case." (It looks like it's another despo (desperate person) case.)
Raina dropped her head in despair, letting it lightly bang on the desk. It's barely even five minutes since the last "despo" patient left... Why do these people keep bothering her?!?

A/N: The ring part is a true story. I literally tried it on one of the customers who tried to hit on me while I was working. Of course, I didn't have a secret compartment under a desk but you get the point. Idk if any of you know Superwoman a.k.a. Lily Singh but she did this in one of her videos, I can't remember which though (I'm such a terrible fan XD). And because this customer wouldn't stop bothering me, inspired by it, I tried it out and it worked. So, ladies out there... Here's a tip, bring a decent wedding looking ring with you, it comes in handy! XD
Also, I'll be going on a trip next week so (maybe) I might not be able to post the next chapter... I'll try my best but I can't promise an update. Sorry :(
